my son has a late archery doe permit. I am going to make him hike for it. Is that being rediculous
-
It's his permit, I would let him hunt how he wants to.

How old is your son? I think that it might be worth it to make him hike because he should have a million opportunities to blow a stalk until he gets it right. If he's young it might be a good time for him to learn.
If he's over 40 maybe you should just let him shoot it however he wants. :chuckle:

It depends. How do you want him to hunt. This is not meant to be offensive. If you want him to hunt hard and earn it then make him spot and stalk the Mule deer Doe. If you want him to hunt from the road witha warm cup of coffee let him shoot the first one that will stand. Others may disagree on this but I feel that if you can successfully spot and stalk a mature mule deer you have accomplished an amazing feat. :twocents:

Man tons of opportunity for spot and stalk how could you pass that up. You could learn a life time of info in a few days doing that over there. Have fun with it, if he's having fun you should be too! It was a kick in the pants watching my son stalk in on his buck last year, I'll never forget it!

Make him spot and stalk!!! I'd take a Video camera and film it!!! Then you can laugh about the stalks with him for years to come!!!....... :chuckle: Even a Doe with a bow in crunchy snow is no easy feat!!!

The last time i drew the late archery tag for Entiat, the does were very skidish. Yes we could have sho a few from the road but most of the time they were on there gaurd and moving quickly the opposite direction.
Yes, there is a lot of doe's, but not a garentee.

He is 18. I didnt have time to give all of the details. I would like him to esperience it by getting out and trying to make some stalks and hike for it. I dont want to just drive up and shoot the first dig doe he finds. I know its his tag but it is the experience of the out doors to. Not just drive up the road and fling arrows. My buddy has a wall tent, he and his son who is 11 who is going to start hunting next year will be there to. Wall tent fire good friends and some hunting. I know my son wont mind the spot and stalk. I just told some people what i wanted to do and got mixed comments. I had the any buck tag in 06 and had a blast getting out and hunting. Did good to. Saw lots of deer off of the road.

Yep thats how i like to do it.

I've also had a permit (passed on 7 bucks that I drew back the bow on but I was looking for the grandaddy) and, if you just shoot one off the road, you are missing a golden opportunity for a lot of stalks and to see some great bucks (although you can't go after them it is really fun to see them.)

Add some sort of challenge to the hunt as well, maybe hold out for a lone doe or one that has a notch in it's ear. Or find a big doe with double throat patches and chase her! Maybe limit his shot to 20 yards and under. :dunno: You could make this a fun trip. This could be one of the best learning experiences you could get on stalks as I said in an earlier post. Kudo's to you, it's nice to see you trying to show your son there's more to it than stepping out of the truck!

Ya ,thats how i learned. I will get it on video. It will be a great hunt.
