Title: Would you buy a Walther P22???
Post by: jrebel on August 07, 2009, 11:05:39 AM
I want a small 22 pistol and was wondering what the reviews were on the Walther P22.  Would you buy one and if not what would you buy instead???

Thanks in advance :hello:

From what I have read on the reviews it seems they are all mixed some like and some don't.  My friend picked one up a couple of months ago and he really likes it and has no complaints at all.  I shot it and the feel in my hand was really good even though it is a smaller gun.  Usually they do not feel real good but this one did.  I think if I currently did not have a 22 pistol then I would probably pick the Walther up.  I just can not give up my Ruger Mark II.

I purchased the one with the extended barrel.  I didn't like it as the allan heads kept loosening and the sight would turn.  I ended up selling mine, but if you get the one without the extended sight / barrel you should be good to go.

I don't have any personal experience with them I've heard mostly good things but a fair number of (-) comments.  Enough to make me leery.  I'd probably forego the Walther and buy a Mark series Ruger.

I gave them a peek, but found too many negative reviews.

I went with a Browning Buckmark instead. Great pistol,I've got thousands of rounds through it and can't recall a single malfunction. Very accurate also.

I have both the MK I and Mk II Rugers AND a Walther-built S&W that is the P-22 in other clothes.  It had a few teething problems and after 100 rounds and a good teardown/clean its been trouble free.

The Rugers just run and run...the Mk I has over 20,000 rounds through it and all I have replaced is the recoil spring assy.  The Mk II has about 5,000 through it and it had one or two problems then ran straight.

NO, at my jurisdiction we tried out Walther 380's, 12 of them for a free use for one year. all but one failed.

This is Buckmark's "better" half :) and I LOVE my P22.  I would recommend it whole-heartedly.  I have smaller hands and it's perfect.  I have the whole set up with extended barrel and the grip modifications and have used everything without any hitches.  Buckmark finds the gun too small for his hands, but I could shoot it all day without any problems.

This is by far my favorite "plinking" gun and one I have by my side everywhere I go.  It's not my personal carry weapon, but only for lack of stopping power.

Personally, if you are looking for just a fun gun to go shooting, I don't think you could go wrong.

I had one that I bought private sale. The guy bought it for his wife and she wouldn't shoot it. He wanted her to have the first shot so I bought it brand new at a steal of 180 bucks. I put only 100 rounds through it and had no problems. I sold it while I was laid off to pay bills. I'm not big on pistols so to say if it was accurate, who knows. My best self defense with a pistol would be to throw it really hard and hope it knocks em out. :chuckle:

I had one and let a buddy talk me out of it for his son.  I liked it, especially the interchangable backstraps.  It fit my hand and if I were looking for another 22 pistol, I would buy one.
It is a plinker, not a target pistol.  You can buy the 3" model and then purchase the 5" barrel and switch them back and forth, which is what I did.  However, the 5" barrel wasn't any more accurate than the 3" barrel.
I wish that Walther would have left the 3" as the minute of soda can plinker and made the 5" as a target barrel capable of 1/2" groups at 50 yds.

All really good advice, keep it coming.

All the responses seem to mimic all other reviews, split about 50/50 for like/dislike.  Oh the decisions.....  I have a smith 422 that is extremely accurate, but just want something I can throw in the truck or pack when out goofing in the woods.  However it won't take the place of my 45 acp or .357 mag so I would like it to be small and not to heavy.

Walther is also coming out with a 380 that is almost the same size and looks as the P22.  I have been looking at getting that since it is a little more pop than the 22..

I was looking for a .22 pistol for the same use, I ended up getting a Buckmark micro (4" barrel). It is not quite as light as a P22 but I feel the quality is a little better with the Browning. It's pretty damn accurate and has given me no issues.

i love my p22. i can hit a beer can at about 25 yards over and over again. i've killed 5 grouse with it also. 2 of them i shot out of the air. my only regret is i didnt get the longer barrel. im savin up the longer barrel. some times i will get a miss fire but i always buy the cheap ammo.

The Walthers are excellent pistols, but for a woods gun, I would go with a Ruger or a Browning,,, much better weapons in my opinion for that kind of work.

I have both and a walther and a ruger MK2. I like the walther but it depends on what you want it for. The ruger is way more accurate but the walther conceals better.  :dunno: what do you need it for?

actionshooter,
I am going to use for plinking and grouse.  Basically it will be a "Fun" gun.  I have many guns for accuracy at long range, concealled pistols, ect.   Just looking for a fun gun that is accurate enough for what I am paying for.  I really hate buying guns and a month later selling them for a loss becuase they are pourly made and junk.  So just want a feel for the people who own and or have shot them.

Thanks.

I had a few problems the first 200 rounds but they seem to have worked themselves out. If your a decent shot it could be a grouse getter, sights aren't the best (short sight radius).

The new ones are fine.

The older generations were jam-o-matics, and had a tendency to launch hot brass into your face. New extractor and magazine designes have eliminated most problems. There are still the occasional cracked slides, though.

Definitely not all that accurate...probably one of the worst current production 22lr pistols in that category (from major manuf.).
They are also a bit picky on ammo...most people say their P22 will only cycle "quality" ammo, and not the cheaper bulk-pack stuff. So if you don't mind shooting $7 per 100rnds of minimags over $14 per 550rnds of federals...go for it! Who knows, you may get lucky!

For the same price the ruger or browning entry level pistols are much better as far as durability, accuracy, and reliability.
Walther's customer service isn't that great, either, from what I hear.

I don't think buying a P22 would be a mistake if you're looking for a fun plinker, and something that kids or new shooters would enjoy...but my Ruger 5.5" target 22/45 with VQ internals and 1911 grip mod finds it's way to my hip quite a bit for grouse.  ;)

I think they are OK. More like a toy gun. Personally, I like the Sig Mosquito. I do think all the .22's are ammo tempermental. What I like about the Sig is it is similar to the P226.

I would definately check out the Buckmark series from Browning or the Mark series from Ruger. Those are the two best 22cal pistols out there presently IMHO.  ;)

Thanks for all the help everyone!!!

Just bought a Ruger Mark III 22/45 with the 4" bull barrel.   :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL:

I think it will work out well for my needs.  Small, accurate (I HOPE), and a heck of a lot fun to shoot.  It also has the same angle as the 1911 which will be good beings that I own a kimber .45.

Good choice..
I would have got the Browning
You know they make a .22 conversion for your kimber..

Yeah, i like the thought of the kimber conversion except the wear and tear the frame.  I also really liked the buckmark but the shop I like to support had the ruger in stock and I'm impatient.  Maybe the next one will be the buckmark, you know a guy can never have to many guns.   :chuckle:

all p22's that get bad feedback are for jamming, this is usually because people dont use the hv ammo for the first 200 rds , after the 200 round break in, trouble free and super accurate. they are built very tight ( sometimes too tight). ive had a 200rnd jammer and after that nothing, flawless, 500 round brick in one sitting no cleaning and it wont jam.  all my friends have one, same thing, first 200, issues, then they break in and its all over.

Have you looked at the CZ 75 Kadet which is chambered for .22lr?

I like my P22, has the short barrel and used to keep in my snowmobile jacket for those "killer attack Ptarmigan" when we went riding a couple years ago..... Great little, fun, play gun for sure.. And fits in any pocket you got....  Would be the ultimate Wyoming Gopher getter for certain....

My "little" bro had a shot and a long barrel. loved the short barrel but was finicky on only liked mini mag or other hi velocity rds.. wound cycle consistently on bulk rem hollow points... had a long barrel loved it until the barrel end weightcame off and rattled... started messing his shots up. Once he got it tightend back down something on the gunbroke when firring and the slide hit him in the head... They sent him a new one and then he sold it... Still has the Short barrel and still loves it.
