Post by: bowhunterforever on August 12, 2009, 07:51:20 PM
I'm getting a new broadhead target in a couple days.I have been using the foam block target for a few years now. Just wondering what your favorite broadhead target is and why? Thanks

I make my own out of expandable foam.  It lasts for years, stops broadheads well and repairs in a jiffy.

PolarBear,
Would you elaborate on how you make your target?
Thanks,
Ben

Buy a 5 in thick 4x8 ft urethane foam insulating board about 80 bucks or so cut in the appropriate size glue a about 3 together. Use expanding foam in a can to repair it. One board can last for several years. Or find a guy that sprays urethane foam and have him spray you a pile of it, they usually test spray before doing a job.

My target is still in great shape after 6 or 7 years.  I get that 2 part expandable foam, mix it up and pour into a garbage bag in the bottom of an old water pressure tank.  Fill it a little less than 1/2 full.  After it expands to about 3/4 of the way, tie the bag off tight and let it do it's thing.  I let them sit for a few days just to make sure it is all cure.  Pull out of the tank, rip off the bag and let er' fly.

Polarbear, I am unclear on what a water pressure tank is so can you tell me the rough dimensions? How far do the broadheads penetrate?

This sounds like a great idea and easy on the wallet too.

How about a couple of photos, you know we all love photo editorials.   :)

A photo tutorial would be awesome!  That sounds like a great idea.  you could even make a form like concrete and just line it with plastic.  Or even better would be a form shape like an animal.  Might have to experiment with this idea.  ;)

Gotta love youtube...

This shows how to fill a storage box with foam. That seems exactly like what I want for a target. 1 cubic foot from the 1 quart size.

That video sums it up perfectly.  Here is mine that I have shot for many years.  It aint pretty and is a little beat up but it still stops every arrow.  That aint bad considering that I blow completely through hay bales and then some.  Broadheads will only penetrate about 4".  I just stick 1" & 2" target dots on it at different spots.

I think that I ordered it through Van Dykes Taxidermy Supply.  You might be able to get some at a craft store like Michael's.

Are you using the spray foam? Like the stuff from Home Depot?

I use the Great Stuff foam that you get at Home Depot to fill in the holes and repair the target after it gets beat up a bit.  You can make a whole target with those spray cans but it takes a bunch of them to make a decent sized target.  I have a javalena sized target that I mage by spraying a bunch of foam cans that only had half or a little left in them into a feed sack and tying it off at the top.  It works fine but you need to tie it off so that the foam compresses more as it expands to make that target more dense.

Any of you guys try the new block fusion?

That foam looks like marine faom.  You should be able to buy it at any marine store.  What density do you use?  2, 4, 6, 8 lb density????  Or does it even matter???  Here is the web site I am looking at can someone give imput on the density that would be best....  http://www.shopmaninc.com/foam.html

I've been using the Block Fusion this practice season.  I also have a couple of other targets, so I've shot it limited times, but it seems to be holding up well.  The arrows pull out super easy, as well.  I haven't shot it a ton - maybe have 40 to 50 arrows into it so far but it's not showing a lot of damage (for broadheads, anyway.)

I also have a Morrell 6 Shooter target, which sucks.  I was regularly burying the fletching in the target or shot all the way through it occassionally.  Either way, it screws up your arrow.  I primarily use it as  a back stop for smaller targets now but don't actually shoot that piece of crap anymore.

The other target that I've recently used is the Hips.  It's kind of a weird foam target but it worked pretty well.  It held up pretty good (I shot that one alot) and the arrows were easy to pull out.  It's light so it's easy to move around.  The only problem that I encountered was with the smallest version was so light that I had to put a rock or stick behind it so that it didn't move around or flip over when I shot it (I bought a little one that would go in the trunk of my car so I could stop on the way to work and on the way home from work every day to practice shooting steep uphill, downhill, through trees and brush - whatever I couldn't do at home).

I use a bag target with field points for the off season.

I haven't tried it yet, but a friend who does landscaping shoots into bales of peat moss, can't imagine it would stand up to alot of abuse, but probably good enough to get sighted in.

I use the Morrell's Yellow Jacket and I am into my fourth season with it and it has MANY MORE YEARS left in it.

Jrebel,

I just called the company from the link you provided (US Composites) and the rep said that they have had people call about using the foam as a target. But they do not recommend it because the target would have a hole when you removed the arrow. I am not sure I believe it since PolarBear has been successful with it. Maybe their foam is more brittle.

You can read on the description of the 4lb density that, "works well in floating decoy or taxidermy applications ". So I think that is the product I am going to get since PolarBear thinks he got his from a taxidermist.

I used to have my buddy save all the celophane wrap off the pallets.  I made my own bags using feed bags and stuffed them with the celophane wrape.  It stopped the arrows good and you could pull them out with one hand.

I just started using the Cabela's brand Arrowhawk broadhead target.  Have about 120 arrows into it shooting bradheads only.  Stops arrows well, easy removal.  Seems to holding up better than the "Black hole" target I bought last year.  That target was a POS.  So far am pretty happy with the "Arrowhawk".  Am shooting about 40 arrows a night with broadheads only, will let you guys know over the next 10 days before idaho elk opens how it holds up.

Really?  I like the Black Hole target.  I don't think it's meant for broadheads though... believe it's strickly for field tips.  I could see where using broadheads would render it pretty useless pretty darn quick.

I have a black hole target and only shoot practice broadheads, and they do only last about two years before you are sending the arrows right through it.  I may have to check into the Arrowhawk.

I have a black hole and its taking a beating from my thunderheads. Everytime I pull an arrow out a chunk of the target comes with it.

I know we're off topic here but I should mention that I have been using the Black Hole target for the past 4 seasons and it still has at least 3-4 years of service left in it.  The reason is because I bought the larger size and I utilize all parts of the target, not just the center.  The only time I aim at the center is when I'm shooting at 50 yards plus.

I am finally getting around to posting the results of my experiment.

I bought a container of the US Composites foam and filled a office storage box with the stuff. It seemed perfect but upon shooting it with a broadhead at 20 yards the only thing that stopped the arrow was the stump behind the foam. Take a look at the photos.

Oh well, that was a waste of $40 and a few hours of research and construction.

Whatever you do dont buy a yellow jacket. For the last three years i have went through one for each season when using broadheads. It didnt seem to matter whether you were shooting the practice bladeds or not. I bought a Block 4x4 at the end of last season and im still shooting it as of now. It has lasted longer than any other target i have owned. It looks like i should at least get another season if not two out of it :twocents:

I prefer elk or deer, but bears, antelope, caribou, work too.  I'd like to add a wolf to the mix at some point.

For practice, I like a block or 3D McKenzie
