This year any Washington resident can apply for the hound hunts.
I have updated my website with info about which units we hunt. There are also links to the the cougar hunting regs and the application page.
http://bearpawoutfitters.com/washington_cougar_hunting.html (http://bearpawoutfitters.com/washington_cougar_hunting.html)
I have a cougar video on this page if you have never been cougar hunting with dogs, it might be interesting for you to watch.
There was another thread where a few of us had talked about cougar hound hunting applications here in WA. I had told someone that if they applied they could find someone on here to take them hunting. I got to thinking about it and I can afford to help one person as a donation to Ray and the H-W website. So if you guys want to apply, and if Ray can come up with a fair way to choose a winner, (if there is more than one succesful applicant) I will help one H-W member get a cat at no charge. (my donation to the site)
I also have rates listed on the page for various hunting options that are very affordable in case someone wants to buy a hunt.
I will be gone antelope hunting for a few days, but will check back when i can, if anyone has questions send me a message or just ask on the thread. I will get back when I can....
-
Dale,
Thanks and what a great gesture. I'll tell you what we can do like we agreed to and just donate the hunt to someone interested. Right now we do not need any web funds.
Here is an idea on what we can do:
1) Once someone has submitted their application to the WDFW they can notify us here by the end of day August 31st (just like the draw deadline).
2) Then we wait for the drawing.
3) If there is more than one member who has drawn the tag to hunt cougars and who has notified us here by the end of day August 31st 2009 we will do a raffle. Otherwise it can simply go to the only draw winner. I can conduct the raffle right here with my little girl drawing a single name out of a hat or jar if there is a need. (On video to verify fairness)
Does that make any sense to everyone? The only person not qualified would be myself. If there is nothing wrong with that we can move forward. Let me know Dale.
Thanks again for your kind gesture.

Thanks
-
Im in! Id love to get a big ol kitty!
-
Ok mine and my wifes (Bwana) are in! I need a lion!
-
Got mine in. ;) Now we all wait.
-
Don't you still have to own a dog to apply? You have to get an affidavit from a vet before you can get the tags from the WDFW... I HATE it when too many guys w/out dogs apply for these...you guys wanna feed these hounds all year so someone can come over from the city to hunt for one weekend? WTF?
Sorry about the rant- but that is screwed for us that train and work with our hounds all year to get ousted by a guy that doesn't even own one.

*censored*...i should have looked at the regs before posting... :P :P it's still screwed that anyone can apply, but now i'm in the same boat as bearpaw...anyone want's to hunt and gets a tag let me know. I just want to work the dogs!!!! :)
-
I got hounds.
I believe it is open to anyone this year though.
-
I got hounds.
I believe it is open to anyone this year though.
yep they opened it to anyone. I wonder how many guys without hounds will get a pursuit only tag and never use that... :bash: what a waste!!! i wish they had a seperate pool for those, that's more important than killing the damn things.
-
I agree with you guys that opening it to anyone is dumb. Having said that, I'm entered and will be calling you guys if pulled. I don't even need to kill anything, it would be fun to tag along with you houndsman.
Thanks for the generous offer Bearpaw.
-
I'm applying. Some very generous offers here.
anyone want's to hunt and gets a tag let me know. I just want to work the dogs!!!!
I would never do this otherwise as I don't have the money to shell out for a guided hound hunt. That doesn't mean that I wouldn't make an expenses donation and buy the beer. I know you guys want to work your dogs at least. Like others here on Hunt-Wa, those of us without hounds will certainly be giving you hound handlers and especially the generous BearPa a call if we get the permit.
-Steve
-
I have to admit, I'm very mixed bag on this whole thing. I would love to apply and draw one of these hunts if I knew I had a hound hunter that would be able to help me. But, at the same time I feel pretty awful about potentially pulling a tag when there are many more deserving hound owners who should get it over me. If I got drawn and had to eat the tag because I couldn't find someone with hounds to help me I'd feel pretty terrible. I'm undecided at this point about whether I will apply or not, we'll see...
-
Shane,
I've got mixed feelins bout this too. 'Steelin a hound hunters tag' sorta. But the original offer of this thread is a site member making a generous donation. -That could end with one of us making a dent in the Deer killers of the NE corner of the state. Good for the handler, good for the dogs, good for me, and exceptionally good for the Deer.
-Steve
-
I'm undecided at this point about whether I will apply or not, we'll see
Then don't ;)
-
But the original offer of this thread is a site member making a generous donation.
True, but did you or anyone else think about the possability of members drawing more than one of these tags? :dunno:
-
I'm in. :IBCOOL:
-
True, but did you or anyone else think about the possability of members drawing more than one of these tags?
Realizing that I am a very selfish person, still I did think about this. If I wasn't drawn the second time, (for the donated hound hunt), I would still canvas Hunt-Wa membership that has doggies that wants to run them. I'd still be willing to pay someones gas and beer/Lemonade for the opportunity. -And probably share a sizable amount of Kitty jerky when the time comes.
Since there are only two permit units offered to be hunted with doggies, since you can't just put in 'Points Selection Only', I opted for the second two to be non hound opportunities. Have calls, will travel.
-Steve
-
Awesome gesture. I'm more than frickin bummed though. I couldn't draw when it was limited to a few guys, not sure how I will ever draw now. CRUD. I know this is good for your business though so I am glad that it helps the serious hound guys.
-
I'm in
AND if I don't win the free hunt--I will pay to hunt.
Ditto to JackOfAllTrades on Hunt-WA site and guys with dogs.
What a great opportunity :whoo:
-

:chuckle: :chuckle: Oh boy I was same when last year there were 700 applied and I was like wow 700 houndmen in wa. No way... so I figured and nothing we can do about it.
I am sure bearpaw have a good heart to people. Who ever got DRAW gonna bring a Lunch and gun. Dang what do I do with rest of my stuff.
I know that he knows how we all feel after u posted. But that's his choice. :'(
We some of us houndmen paid some nice breedline pups and trainned our dogs. Everyday I clean their sh%ts from kennel with 5 dogs, and 3 bags a month will be 90 dollar a month to feed dogs. I spend every week to excrise dogs and dragging scents and working on broke off Elk, Coyote, Mule, Whitetail, and rabbits.
Hard part is when we wait from March 15 until sept 1st when Raccoon season open season till march 15 allowed us hunt coons and working on teaching my dogs NOT to get on different animals. And whole vet expenses rabie shot, worms shot and build a strike box, collar, tracking radio collar and kennel etc and animals license, snowmobile with trailer and build a trailer for dogs sled. And strike box for summer rigg Everything cost us soo much.
Plus I have to go Idaho with 280 dollar tag to get draw or nothing plus 181.00 for bear and 181.00 for cougar to get good skills doing in Idaho plus my gas trips almost 1,200 dollars on 9 trips to idaho.
People just put tag in for 6.60 dollar who don't own a dogs WTF.... but we work hard for over years for nothing and I personal never got draw N.E. Cougar permit for 5 years. But I went on someone permittee who got draw two years ago and he owns hounds and he invited me then one of our hound got killed by Wolves and end up EXPENSIVE Vet on 2nd dog head Damage with Ear totally Infection for two years treatment and might put him sleep this year :bash: and two of our other dogs CHANGED A LOT after they smell wolves tracks TOTALLY AFRAID to run because they met them before. It wasn't easy after I spend whole 5 years!
Thank u very much DANNY the wdfw.
I wrote a letter to DANNY last year after I found out it was 750 applied and He wrote me back I know how u feel. nothing we can do about it.
I give up as houndman. I feel bad for my dogs staying home whole the times. Oh well. Maybe I should Change my hobby.
Mulehunter.
-
I feel the same way Mulehunter :'( :'(
That said I need to somehow justify feeding these potlickers. So any HuntWA member who draws a lion permit and needs a lion treed, I offer my and my Leopard Curs services, on one condition. You have to agree before we go out that if we run and tree a small cat or ANY females you will be happy to take photos only. I will NOT have any 90 pounds juveniles or females shot over my dogs. If your good with that, I'd be more then happy to take you out and see if we can put some lions up the tree. I will not accept any compensation, no gas money, nothing.
-
Awefully nice of you too Fred, we have some very generous members on this site guys.

That's a generous offer Machias- I will do the same thing on the same conditions....no lep curs though :)
We need to get the point across that killing females is bad for business.
-
You should try a Leopard Cur once....naw you better not you'd end up having to sell your hounds. :chuckle:
-
One thing people need to keep in mind before applying for a permit, is that you need to be in fairly good condition so that you can follow the hounds when they're on a track.
Bearpaw or some of the other hound guys on here, maybe you should explain a bit about how much work is involved in hunting cats with dogs.
-

Oh- just ask anyone over in the city- you just drive around till you see a track, turn loose, eat a sandwhich and stroll on over to the tree to see the cat. :chuckle: :chuckle:
Yeah right!! It's a LOT of work and a LOT of walking/snowshoeing in crappy, thick, sometimes miserable conditions. There are times when you trun loose and the dogs go the wrong way on the track- or they loose scent, or the trash off (hard to admit...but it happens ;) ) Often you lose track of the dogs and have to spend time finding them or tracking them down... It is quite a thrill when you see a lion in a tree, but they rarely come easy.
-
So are you guys taking guys in to any of the hound hunting units, or only specific units?
-
It's a LOT of work and a LOT of walking/snowshoeing in crappy, thick, sometimes miserable conditions.
Just like Blacktail hunting. Just like Bear hunting on the wetside.
Don't cha know that all the city livin hunters do two laps around Green Lake every day to stay in shape? :chuckle:

LOL, boy am I glad I never have to do that again! :P

:chuckle: other thing brand new collar as GPS new stuff would cut u half of hiking and find a tree where cat are more less than old fashional style. It cost me 600 dollar for gps with collar plus extra collar cost 200.00 each dogs. Amazing thing I can hunt with out anyone help me. I can't hear my dogs barking or way up far. I could always find my dogs and bring them home safe. I thank Gps. Now why its unfair when I spend so expesnive stuff just for me to make it work for me.
Geez..

-
I have not drawn yet and was about to give up on the whole hound deal, but watching bearpaws video rejuvinated me again. I miss hunting my dogs every weekend or day off I had. Hope me or the wife draws, Im not even sure my dogs are up too it anymore ;) ;)
-
this really sucks, it screws any small time houndhunter like me big time. guides and others well known who will do it for free may get to go hunting, but it blows my chances and most outa the water of getting to run lion in wa
what a complete waste

my, my, my, what to say ..........................

They also have to have a dinner bell around the dogs neck too. :chuckle:

Sorry everyone, I have been trying to hunt archery antelope in thundershowers :bash:
Toughest archery antelope hunting ever. It was just starting to dry up and we had several bucks at about 80 years today but now it's raining again tonight, waterholes will still be useless, back to stalking tomorrow... :bash:
Be sure and apply before Aug 31 cougar deadline.
I have been talking to people in the right places trying to get hounders a pursuit season, that is what we really need for training hounds. If you guys want to help out the hounders, send a few short letters to the wildlife commission, county commissioners, and legislators and ask for a pursuit season with equal number of tags as kill tags. I posted a contact list so you can easily send email.

I'm in.
I understand the consternation felt by those with hounds about people without hounds being able to apply for the permit BUT...if you stop and think about it from a numbers standpoint; higher numbers of applicants might actually increase the number of permits afforded to hound only hunters! I agree with bearpaws attempt to convince those in charge to allocate an equal number of permits for both types of hunts as that would be the most fair option.
I just want to get out there and do some good hunting and think it would be great to meet some fellow hunters and enjoy the hunt with other like-minded people. Get tired of all the "other types" over here on the wet side!
-
I am in :)

houndhunter...if you get a chance send an email message to the wildlife commission and to the WDFW requesting a pursuit season. Politely explain to them that you need to have time in the woods in order to maintain trained dogs. Ask them to please issue an equal number of pursuit only permits to houndhunters only.
The state is listening to this request, they understand that they need a few hounders with experienced hounds around the state in case of emergencies that could arise with depredations. Send email today, and get as any other people to send email as possible. This will only happen if enough people ask for it.

funny i've been thinkin for awhile bout postin a thread to ask for someone to help me find out who to contact about hound hunting. it really sucks, i didnt even get to let loose on a lion last year now it looks like im gonna have to goto idaho. which sucks cause of the $$ im gonna have to spend. anyways even just having a pursuit only would be nice
thanks for posting that, i will write my e-mail as soon as i have the time to write a well write letter
-
Im in guys! Stevens/PendOreille with hounds as first choice and without as second choice.
I used to own dogs too, but after putting in for 4years and only being drawn for pursuit only, which also took away my points. The way I see it these dogs were trained to do one thing and they love running cats just as much as I love hunting.
I ended up selling them as I wasn't able to give them what they needed anymore.
-
elkslayer....I hear you on selling the dogs....when they outlawed hounds in 96 I felt like my best bear dogs needed to be hunted where they could hunt bear. I kept my best lion hounds for Idaho and Utah lion hunting but sold my best bear dogs. It was like someone ripped my heart right out of my chest......
Hate to admit it, but I cried all the way home from the airport and it brings tears to my eyes to write this.....my son hated me for weeks but now understands after growing up.... :'(
-
There was aquestion as to when the draw will occur.

may not be sold or reassigned by the hunter.
Hunter Training: Successful applicants must complete

Individuals selected for a cougar permit must sign and

One thing I don't like about the permit process is that you can't just select one unit and leave the others blank, -in affect reducing odds of being selected.

If I find out I accidentally drew a boot hunt.......
How many Beer u drank when u apply? :chuckle:
Mulehunter
-
Well, I applied for the two units that BearPaw offered for, then I applied for two boot hunts instead of other hound hunts that I would not have doggies for. (even though there were some other very generous offers here). The process would not allow me to apply for only the two hound hunts and nothing for the other two positions. It really sux that we have to wait until Oct. 5 to know what units/seasons we've been awarded. None the less, If I won the boot hunts I'll still endeavor to do some research and make some trips to that unit with calls.
-Steve
-
I got drawn for a boot hunt in gmu's 124-133.Never put in for any hound hunts.
-
hopefully you guys got selected for the hound hunts...... ;)
-
The process would not allow me to apply for only the two hound hunts and nothing for the other two positions.
I was able to apply for only two hunts. :dunno:
-
You can apply for one or more units, your not required to fill in all four choices. I do it every year and with every species. I rarely do all four choices.
-
WELL I MUSTA DONE SOMETHING WRONG! :bash:
Now, how do I find out what I got drawn for? Do I have to wait for their notification in early October?
-Steve
-
If you got a boot hunt, I'll be more then happy to try and call one in for you.
-
What a seriously generous offer! The two boot units I applied for are a good drive for you though. Okanogan and Chelan I think. Gas money and lunch in it for you at least. If you're a really good caller, (and I'm a good shot), there's some kitty jerky for you as well. We need to meet up some time. If I don't hunt rifle Elk this year, I'll be coming east for late Whitetail.
Now I wanna know what I won! I wanna know. I wanna know. I wanna know. I wanna know. I wanna know. :'(:bash:
I've never hunted Cougar with real intent. Sure, I've called a few times in years past with no success. In all my years in the woods, which is probably less than 20% time of what some of you have spent in the woods, I've only seen two at distance. (heard a third) -Which, I feel are accomplishments in themselves. Having a remote caller, (humanoid), would be most advantagous.
I sure wish there was a way to find out what hunt I got so I could talk to a gamie for that area. I'd be one to set up around a rancher that's got a nusiance cat hanging around. I'd also like a little time to check on camping facilities in that area. A lot of the commercial camps close down in the winter.
-Steve
-
Sometimes if you call and ask real nice they will tell you......sometimes.

Keep me posted guys on who draws a hound hunt, I will be pretty busy all fall so you may need to PM me when you find out if you drew a hound hunt....
Good Luck, Dale ;)

Nobody came last season for that hunt but my son ended up helping a friend. Mulehunter came and helped out too, he found the track, and they all ran the cat together. Cindy killed an older female so that gives her one of each sex as she drew in 2008 and killed a tom that year.

Are you going to do it again this year Bearpaw? When I posted "I am in", I wasn't looking at the date of the original post, I thought it just went up this spring.
PathfinderJR and I both put in for Ferry and Stevens County just yesterday. No points, but keeping our fingers crossed....

delete this thread quick :chuckle:

really cool clip
-
Pathfinder, thanks for asking.
OK, I will offer 1 cougar hound hunt in WA to a H-W member in 2010.
You have to apply in August for the hound hunts. The hunt apps available now are for no hounds.
-
Very generous offer. Thank You
-
I will also try to involve other H-W hound members, mulehunter is very welcome to come help again. Could be an aweful lot of fun. I have plenty of room here at my place, we can easily sleep everyone involved in our cabins.
Hope you draw whacker or pathfinder. Don't forget you have to apply for hounds in August.
-
May have a photographer bugging you guys too. Mulehunter keeps the pressure on me, I might have to deny my kids just once. :)
-
My wife might kill me if I draw too many more tags this year. But I will apply anyway. Need to get my butt in better shape if I expect to be able to follow dogs.
-
That would be good to meet you bone...
-
Indeed! I used to work with a couple "good" friends of yours. I think they might be anyway, they always said "pretty good" things about you. LOL
-
i put in for the dog tags but they even took away the late boot tags this year in klick :bash: wonder why the bast%^&* we had some luck last year with them was going to put in again for them but they are not there
-

OK, now I am confused. I bought a special hunt application for cougar "with dogs". I went into WDFW's website and applied for the Stevens County and Ferry County hunts. It looked like they took. I have "application pending" in that spot.
Did I f$@! this up?

Hey folks, I almost screwed this up and thank jackelope for getting me to pull my head out... :chuckle:
