Title: Cougar in heat and other vocals (call in videos added)
Post by: Kain on August 13, 2009, 11:43:21 PM: I almost feel bad using videos from these animal lovers to try to hunt cougars......wait no I dont!!! :chuckle: :chuckle:
Anyone know of a call that can make this sound?

All 3 methods utilize extremely fresh sign to be effective. Personally, I would never waste time cold-calling. I know of a very successful guide that does it in Arizona, but he scouts ideal cat country year round, and then calls those areas come hunting season.

Rainshadow make's a outstanding call and sound's. i called with him in Arizona. i've heard quite a few cougar chirp's he sounded the same he had a big Tom there get vocal on him. i'm going to use more elk sound's this year. I was trying to figure out a way to get the most out of my calling time by trying to figure out the best call and strategy to get the most different kind of predators to come in.

Post by: Big10gauge on October 23, 2010, 06:29:33 AM: I called in a cougar in Sept using chirps, then when i figured it held up I used the cougar in heat and it came in ready for a fight. Steve thinks it was probably a female that was protecting her 2 yearlings. That was fun. I've been checking my mailbox daily for Steve's CD so I can try it again.

No I would have never guessed that they would make sounds like that. I wonder how many have heard sounds like that and had no idea they were hearing a cougar.

Post by: DeerThug on November 02, 2010, 08:07:19 PM: Yup that is what they sound like. I got between a tom and female a few years ago by packwood. Missed the tom and just sat on the logging road. Kept hearing this sound below me. Pretty soon the sound was right below me and I finally figured out what was going on. The tom was above me and she was below. She finally stepped out at about 12 feet. Did not miss that time. She did run down the hill before dying. While i was getting her out, the tom had come below the road looking for her.

Post by: coachteeter on February 03, 2021, 02:26:58 PM: The 45 second video that you posted at 1:22 today is a very similar sound to "181 TT Lion Caterwaul" on the ICOtec Outlaw that my cat came in to at 40 minutes. It literally ran down the hill and stood over my call when I played that sound. It had likely been hanging out watching up until that point. Once I hit caterwaul it was on a mission to defend it's turf against an invading female. At least that is what it looked like to me. She was a 100 pound adult female.

The initial tone, sound and length is so identical, that I think this clip may have been used for the first part of that call...
