Are any of you planning on going out a little later in the season to get full furred Billys, or are you headed out first day to find one withthe biggest horns?
-
family member drew a tag, hes waiting
-
I'm going Sept 6th thru the 16th, not sure how the fur is gonna be that far north right now. I'm hoping for long hair AND big horns. ;)
-
PRobably a little early for long hair. I'm not a goat expert, but think that is more in October.
-
We will be going in Dec. :chuckle:

I would agree but its going to be 150 miles north of Smithers, I know winter will be coming on a little sooner.
-
True story.......
-
hey bone, we were up last week and saw some still losing last winters fur. By the way when you gonna come up for a photo safari?
-
No kidding, don't think I don't think about it constantly!!!!
-
Don't have a tag but would definitely be stressed about it if I did. I'd want to wait, but how long should a guy? It would really suck to get dumped on before you got it done.

I think thats the biggest concern for sure
-
Actually it awsome huntin 'em in the snow. I've one goat client lined up for this year, I keep telling him we'll wait as long as possible this fall for cold weather to the fur good and thick. Hopefully cold weather comes early this year.
-
I can't imagine what the 3 to 4 hour hike that I did today would be like in the snow. It would be a marathon. Maybe some areas are more accessible for hunting in the snow? Bear

Do you find them more in the timber?
-
Just keep an eye on the weather. If there is an early snow, you may not be able to get to the area you want.
Some of those unsucessful hunts in the harvest reports are due to that.

That and the fact that when a weather system comes through in goat country, it can often leave goat country socked in in fog for weeks on end.
Most the time snow isn't too much of a problem, especially in October because goat like to stay in the alpine at least until the rut is done. If they move into the trees before the rut they can't find each other as easily. I wouldn't worry too much about the goats being pushed down into the timber. But like bear said, a lot of goat country becomes pretty inaccessible if you don't have good backcountry ski gear and good avalanche wisdom.
-
im not gonna risk waiting
a big goat is a big goat no matter what its cape looks like
theres no Hair-length in your B&C score
-
I'd rather have a fully haired out 9.5" goat than a booner with a summer coat, guess that's just me.

But would you rather have a booner billy with a summer goat or eat tag soup, that's the real question. :chuckle:

:yeah: Well said.

Several years ago when a buddy and had our goat tags in the Olympics we were up there for the beginning of the season (Sept. 1) and got his goat, and she was short haired.
Do to other things and other hunting we didn't get back to get mine until mid Oct. We got mine a week before the end of the season (Oct. 31) and he was long haired.
Wow, what a difference in the hair.
-
If and when I draw a goat tag, yes, I would rather eat tag soup than have a booner billy with summer hair. To me the goat is all about the coat, cuz 98% of people that look at your mount will not see 3/4" larger mass measurements and 1" longer horns, but they will see that his coat look very short.

that is a good point about the average person looking at your mount, but most likely I will only get to shoot one goat in my life and I would like to get as big of one as possible (some people view this differently). don’t get me wrong there is nothing more I would want then to wait and get a big goat with a thick white coat but I’m not gonna pass on a monster early in the season and risk not getting one at all
-
I'm with Goldtip. I'd be stressed out about it the whole time but definitely would hold out until at least mid October.
-
I didn't know long hair added to inches to get you in the book? Yea, they look better, but in my opinion, everyone has their goals and I will be shooting one with my bow as soon as I can!
-
I probably would have chose a later date than what I have, but those were the dates available and hopefully the billies are getting the longer hair up north. I agree the long hair goats look better, but I would rather get one than not if it came down to it.
-
what they look like when you wait
-
Nice goat royalbull, what's the story? When did he get shot, what's his score?
-
cool mount :)
-
buddy shot him two years ago blazed ridge unit scored above 50 but I'm not sure of exact score his brother in-law wanted him to shoot one in early september but he listened and waited
-
I have went on a couple of gov goat tags and they have waited til mid Nov to shoot and snow has never been a problem. Wait for the hair not the horns.
-
Here's the bad news. With our draw odds, most of us will never have to worry about this problem. I envy action shooter, wish I had the $$$ to book a hunt up north.

I hope no one gets the idea that I am loaded, I have worked a ton of hours, got an extra job and sold a bunch of guns to make it happen. I decided that I would be 80 before I ever drew a tag with the odds.
Now I am already trying to figure out how to do the next on my list, dall sheep

I hear ya actionshooter. People probably have th esame thoughts about me. I just call it passion. I pinch in a lot of other places. (dining out, coffee bar, cigs and booze, cell phone, etc.)
-
I think I am with vidman on this one as well. I think I'd want one all wooled up.

I hear both of you (although I'm 21 and not even in the same position as you). Sometimes when you have a passion, you just make things work. Actionshooter, I'm sure that for you (like me) it has been a dream for years to hunt mountain goats. No matter what your salary is, if you just save your money, you can eventually go on those kind of hunts. For you it is happening now, for me it will probably be another 10-15 years, but I will hunt mountain goats in my life!
-
I'm still waiting for my raffle tag to come in the mail :P

Mountain goat has always been my dream hunt, ya there are others I would love to do, the goat was always first choice. I started putting in for Wa when I was your age, started putting in for other states a few years ago.
You say in 10-15 years, that would put you at about my age.
If I have any advice for you, it would be don't wait that long. Do it in 5 years, start saving now if you have to.
There are so many hunts I want to do and if I wait every 10-15 years I won't get to them all. ;)

There are some really good examples of trophy goats here. Go with long hair. What happens if you shoot a goat in the early part of the season and the goat falls off of a cliff and breaks off both horns. You then have a no trophy from your OIL tag. At least if you shoot a long haired goat you could make a rug out of him.

Well just read through this thread and you know my opinion on this matter. I've attached two pics, one of a short haired goat mount, one of a long haired goat mount. I personally think they both look nice. I certainly wouldn't pass on a big goat just because it had short hair.
-
KLICKMAN, thanks for the link!!

My wife shot an 9.5 yr. old a few weeks ago. It only had 8" horn, nothing but a huge brute with little mean daggars. I posted photos in another thread of where he fell and stuff. He was all banged up and broke a horn so he was a meat and back skin animal.
I'm going out next week for mine. I'll be trying for a trophy type animal. I don't mind a short hair goat. In Sept. actually I'd consider them moderate in my area. The hair is even and thick but not wooly and crazy like a winter goat. In Alaska the goat rug is a great option for a goat. Be prepared for a HEAVY load if you haul out a complete hide and boned out meat! Also working the hoof is very tricky so you'll need a good working area and time to get the skull out and the hoof properly processed for the rug mount or a full mount if your going that direction.
Move to AK and you'll get over-the-counter Goat, Sheep, Brown Bear, Deer, Moose, and Black Bear......oh and Bou too. What you get in tags comes out in costs and time to access the above species. This is big country and one region has only a small portion of the big game options. I think Wrangell would be one of the top fishing and hunting destinations/home. Elk, Moose, Deer, Wolf, Brown Bear, Black Bear, and Goat all in the Wrangell area. Fishing too, as many varieties as a guy has time for.
Last night in prep for my goat hunt I humped up the hill behind my house, shot a buck, and carried him home in an evening romp. I rolled in the door about 11pm. One tag of six burned. Five to go. Ya just gotta get used to traveling heavy and fast for an effective goat hunt IMHO. You never know how much alpine country your white quarry will make you run for that kill shot.
I'll go with a shoulder mount if I get one next week. I will be gunning for a big Billy only. If it's ultra thick and luxurious then I'd spend the time and $$$$ on a rug. I just don't like the late hunts up here. The days are very short and the weather is less than enjoyable. You end up spending a heap of energy hauling in cold weather camp supplies and thats energy I rather spend hauling goat.
Good luck to you WA tag holders. I always wanted to hunt goats near Lake Chelan. Thats great country in there.

:yeah:

I shot this guy way back in the day in now closed Pratt River unit. I shot him the 3rd day of the season, and he had pretty thick fur.
Goat hunting is truley a hunt of a lifetime unless you kill yourself on the hunt. :chuckle:

Fur is growing. This was pretty far north though...

The billies seem to be getting their hair pretty good. The nannies are another story though. Evidence by your pictures.
-
Yep, that was my observation as well.
-
That's pretty normal, especially for the nannies that gave birth this year.

Hey Doug, Is that a recent pic?
Very nice!

Yes action, end of August. I think you are already gone though. I hope you find some furred up goats!
