Title: Animal attractant ??
Post by: brianmtsinc on August 21, 2009, 10:07:52 AM
I am wondering what you all think is the best attractant to bring in deer and elk?  I am pretty new to this and have so far used salt blocks, deer cain, a molasses block and deer grub block.  In my pics it seems they try them all out.  I am not sure what their favorite is and curious if I should just stick to one, or make any changes before Sept. 1st.

Here are a couple pics of my first bear.  :IBCOOL:  He obviously like the deer grub block!

Well salt consumption will begin to drop off dramatically at end of this month and into September. The sweet and food attractants will be best after that

Thanks Shane.
We have some pretty good bucks coming in to one salt like, but I am wondering if we should drop some corn or apples out before Sept. 1 ??  Also, during the season, maybe a couple pounds of corn per day ???

Elk love Selenium and it is good for them.  I put out 50lb bags of the mineral salt 30% selenium mix, SE-30 in late July.  They stomp it into the ground pretty good and will come right back to it in the spring.  In Sept I put out a 4lb sweet corn block.  They will devour that in less than a week.  If you take a look at my pics in the elk hunting section "honey hole is full" you will see how much they like it.

I've had good luck with large Mineral blocks and apples in the early fall..  Like Aug.-late Sept.  Then Doe urine and other deer scents in October and November.  I've got pictures or Deer, coyotes, bears, rabbits, and birds that all stopped to smell some "Doe in Heat" scent on the ground..

well if you can dump apples, that is by far a better attractant

I never use attractant of any kind unless someone gives me some to test, but I never show the photos of any animal where I test an attractant.

I like to use my ability to understand the habits of animals for all my photos, but I don't hunt much anymore and that makes a big difference.  I'm just after the challenge of me against the animal.

But powdered sugar mixed thick will get most bears,  cow in heat will get bulls, tried lots for blacktail bucks and the best is to take a leak in front of the camera.

Finding a well used trail with tracks and sign is always the best plan..  I use the "attractant" not so much to attract the animals but to have them pause or stop long enough to get a good picture of them.  Got tired of getting tons of butt shots or blank photos because of the picture delay on my Moultrie's.

Got it.   :yeah:

I have one trail cam that is picking up nothing but big bucks.  Salt has been working, but I want to entice them to keep coming in after Sept. 1st.  Hopefully I will have some pics to post soon!

Like Moss said just about any feedstore carries what you are looking for as an attractant. Cenex, Dels, King ect. all carry deer and other animal forage blocks. Good luck and get some pic posted.
