Bow or Modern Firearm or both combined into an average?  For bow I would have to say 10 - 15 yards average, I really enjoy being that close as it gets my heart racing and for rifle... right around 65 - 70 yards average. Guess I tend to hunt thicker cover.  :dunno:

I've had shots under 10' and all the way out to 1000 yards but most have been in the 50yard to 75 yard range.

Yeah, no idea what my "average" would be, have not kept track.  Killed elk and deer with a bow as close as 5', have shot deer withe a rifle at ranged 504 and elk with rifle pushing 700yards, and everywhere in between.

60 yards or so. That doe (special hunt) last year I shot with my bow was about 8 yards, so she brought down my average some. ;)

About 150 yards.  Last year... 50 yards (that one snuck up on me while I was "checking my eyelids for cracks"  :chuckle:).  Previous years... close to 200 yards.  I sit on the same bluff, overlooking the same tree-line every year.

My best shot ever was a 160 yard shot (one shot) on a jackrabbit on a dry lake bed in the Mojave Desert... with a Marlin 795, .22 lr.

I would say 100 yards with the longest at 250.  Funny how everyone fusses over having a long range cannon (I'm no exception) but look at the averages.

I may have misunderstood the question but I didn't think he was asking for each person's average shot distance. I thought he meant the overall average shot throughout history for EVERYBODY. And being that this is in the "guns and ammo" forum, I would think that he's talking about shots taken with guns, not bow and arrow, or spears.  :chuckle:  But I guess we'll never know because the person who posted the question has not been back to respond to any of the comments.   :dunno:

I'd say under a 100 yds. I killed one out to 325 yds one time with a 308. But the rest, under a 100 yds.

Big game under 100 yards, small game/birds under 25 yards.

I'd say 50-75 yards.  Think of all the animals killed before scopes became so readily available.. My longest on big game is 204 which happens to be my largest Muley and shortest was about 50 with my average right around 120 yards.

5 yards to one at 686 yards for deer and elk.  I have shot yotes out to 1000 with a bench rest rifle, but I don't typically take it out into the field.

Longest archey shot was on my bear this year 22 yards. Rifle 200 yards on a deer. I can shoot out to 60 with my bow and 500 with my rifle but i just always seem to get the close shots, which i prefer anyway.

Closest with a rifle is 7 yards on a coyote and 12 on a deer with a bow.

So far this year on deer it is approximately (306+204+95+75)/4 = 170 yards.  I suspect my overall average on game is less - even excluding archery.

My closest was less than 2" with a .50cal muzzleloader in NH - shot the head off a grouse that was pecking an apple on the ground below the tree I was sitting in.  I will never fire a muzzleloader again one-handed, straight down (at least I didn't fall).  Furthest was 500+ yards on a doe antelope my ex-wife has shot the rear hoof off - probably 8 shots at that range over a 3-mile pursuit.  Not a pretty kill, but she didn't get away to suffer.

If it is spot and stock, I close the distance to 400 - 500 yds and take the shot. (4 bucks)

If I am still hunting, the range has been 15 to 175 yds. (15 bucks)

These days, I have focused on developing my long range shooting skills and have geared up accordingly. Currently I am limited by the performance of my Nikon Monarch 1200 Laser Range Finder to 800 yds. I am going to upgrade to a Saworski 1500 yd unit.

A friend and I went down to some BLM land for mulies. We both sighted in for long range. I was zeroed at 200, 300WM, and he was the same, 30-06. He specifically bought the 06 for a longer shot in this particular area. If you don't know the area a 1,000 yard shot could easily be taken, not by me, but it could happen. All open space with very clear views.

He got his at 30 paces.
