Title: Waterproof headgear.
Post by: Huntbear on August 23, 2009, 03:11:23 PM
I am looking for a waterproof/camo boonie style hat, any ideas?  I prefer a very wide brimto keep the water off my glasses, and from running down my neck.

I had a waterproof outback style hat, that disappeared it seems, since I can not find it in my gear anywhere.

I have looked at Cabelas, nothing interesting there though.

Any ideas??

They don't come in cammo but you should check out the Outdoor Research Gor-tex sombrero's. I use mine allot while out fishing, great little hat.

 :yeah:

They make one in black/dark green. Great hat for cold rainy weather. To be specific it is the Seattle Sombrero by OR.

I really liked the looks of those Seattle Sombreros and was about to buy one until I found out they are made in China.   :bash:

River's West ... get the "Bucket Hat". Totally waterproof. Wide brimmed. You can fill the inside with water and it won't leak. I don't know about the rest of their products, but that hat is really amazing. I hunt on the west side during nasty weather and my head has never been wet with that hat.  :twocents:

Mines the Orange and black. Work out good for hunting.

Thanks guys, will be looking into all those.

And if I could find the guy I bought my original hat from, I would buy another, but it was 16 years old, and I actually bought it at the Sportsman show in Portland..

Any other ideas?

The only problem with the Seattle Sombrero is when it is windy.  It tends to blow the sides of the hat up and it sticks to a little velcro strip on the side, leaving the brim up.  Otherwise, it's pretty waterproof and works alright.

Not sure where it got off to.  I had it and wore it last year, during elk season.  Now, poof, it is gone....   :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash:

I found one just like it, for 42 bucks plus shipping.  Can not afford, it, will probably go with a bucket hat for now, or something similar.

I like mine OR hat and wear it all the time for hunting, the only thing that truely keeps the rain off the glasses........

Ah ha!  That picture proves my point, though.  I think that the hats are fine but they fold up on the sides in the wind and stick to the velcro thing.  See the side of his hat?  He looks like some sort of Aussie...

Anyway, that's why I quit wearing the thing.  In bad weather it was constantly folding up.  Of course, I used to hunt the Snake (and surrounding areas) for deer and birds a lot and the wind was always blowing.  If you lived in an area that had less wind it might work better.

I also want to mention that it was a quality hat and the waterproofing worked.  Other than the brim folding up I liked it.  Now I just pull my hood up when it rains - but it does cover your ears and limits your peripheral vision a little, which sucks.

I love my Seattle Sombrero by Outdoor Research.  It's priced reasonably and durable.  I"ve had mine for 12 years.  Look at REI.
