Title: Westside Taxidermy - who? how long? how much?
Post by: Dustin07 on August 26, 2009, 11:50:04 AM
Who do you trust on the west side to do your birds? How much is a duck vs a goose? How long are average returns?

I know a lot of taxidermy work averages 6-12 months... and I'm OK with that if i'm told upfront. I want to find someone pre season though because I had some work done this winter that was supposed to be back to me by June for $385 (goose) and the final price was $500+ and I still have not received my mount.

Wow, thats a bunch for a goose.  I dropped off a Harli, Oldsquaw drake and hen, and a spec to have mounted in November and picked them up in early June.  My total bill was $850.  My taxi's work is second to none.  That being said he is located in WallaWalla but it is worth the drive.  The last 2 pics are a snow and brant he has done for me.

That's some great work! does he have a website?  My current guy is on the east side too he did a buck not too long ago for my father in law. 6 month turn and the best work we had seen yet, but the prices skyrocketed on the goose and I haven't even heard from the guy in like 2 months. I'm wondering where he is...

That snow looks great. actually they all do! I went to Missouri this year for Snows, it was incredible. The guide couldn't understand why I wanted to get a blue phase snow mounted... I did some research and found that the genetic population of blues in the midwest flocks is like 40% of the snows. whereas over here in the pacific flyway only like 10% or less are blues... so he sees them all the time, we don't.

He's not on the westside either, but WCTaxidermy visits this site and all pics I've seen of his birds look really good.  If I ever get a bird I want done, I'd seriously consider using him.  He is in Colville.

His website lists prices......and the price on geese look to be quite a bit less than what yours is supposed to cost.

I wish I had some flash on the other birds so you could see more detail.  His business name is Casper Taxidermy in WallaWalla.  I'm going to call him to make sure its ok to post his number on here.  You commented on how the Harli looks and I can say everyone I have seen come out of his shop has looked just as good.  His table standing mounts on fake rocks with shells and stuff look even better.

Sooo another guy that i know of that does good work on the EASTSIDEis Scott Hulse of Born Again Taxidermy. I don't know if he has a website up yet or not, but when my brother was turkey hunting this last spring he met scott at a gas station... My brother shot his bird on a Friday, called Scott, and Scott had the meat packed up, and the fan mount finished and ready to go home Sunday. looks good too...

I just forgot about him.

Even so, I'm probably going to try to find something for Michelle to do, and maybe try Aumans once too since he's in Enumclaw. I thought I heard that his lead times and price were high, but it's not fair for me to say that really yet because I haven't spoken with him personally in a very very long time.

Jeff Reeves at Tru To Life Taxidermy does an excellent job on birds.  He is located in Wenatchee, not exactly the westside, but he's worth it.  His turn around time is always quick.  The last two birds I took him were Snow Geese and I waited until June to take them in and had them back in July.  Now that's not the norm for him, but I think 6 months would be realistic.  I think his website is trutolifetaxidermy.com  I will try to get some pics of those snows up soon.

Peters' Taxidermy in Graham, some of the most real looking mounts I have seen. They have done deers, bear, bobcat, and grouse for me. The quality is outstanding.

John at Willow Creek Taxidermy did my Drake Pintail and my Drake Eurasian Widgeon this last year. His work and customer service are second to none. I will always have my birds done by him! I shipped both birds to him frozen in February and I had them on my wall by April. John was even kind enough to drive them halfway to me so they wouldn't be damaged in shipping. Johns prices are very reasonable and his work is outstanding. Shipping to him is no problem. Give him a call and he'll walk you through the whole process. I cannot say enough about WCT!!!

Seaslave, those are nice mounts.

I'm going to get back into duck hunting after not really doing much of it in the last 10 years....widgeon and pintail will be on top of my list to get mounts.  Saw a few wood ducks on the creek by my house this morning....they will be on the list as well.

A nice Woody is #1 on my list. I saw very pretty one at my lease on Thursday while I was out grassing blinds. Got me really drooling for the season to start.

I know everybody has their favorite.  I see a couple of you noticed this guy in Walla Walla- all I can say is he is the best I have ever seen.  I have looked at a ton of taxidermy from national shows and competitions down to every local shop I can find.  Some guys do good work, but this guy consistently passes the amazing mark.  He has done a pair of harli, Barrows goldeneyes, as well as a complete albino pheasant I shot 2 years ago.  Turn around is dependant on time of year.  If you drop it off now, expect to pick it up next spring (also helps if you pay him.  Amazing how many guys flake on the $$$ when the bird is ready).  However, if you can beat the rush, it's quick.  He did a deer for me, 3/4 pedistal mount, absolutely love it, and turned it in less than 6 weeks.  Had my brothers buck done in the same amount of time.  I asked him if he ever competed, and he won the national taxidermy competition in the mid 80's with a drake scaup on a rock.  Nothing fancy, just that good.  Price is about $200 on ducks and $300 on geese (may have changed, I haven't had anyting done for a couple years).  If you are serious about inquiry, send me a PM and I'll give you the name.
