What are the biggest bulls that have been seen in the Dayton 162 unit. I have been told there are some 380 class and atleast one 400 class? Do you believe it and have you seen any this year?
-
Sorry,,,, the unethicals got the big one last year.
-
do you have the archery tag ? if so where have u been scouting , i used to live there for years maybe i can help
-
they are in there, i beleive i have seen one that will at least push 380, and i have no doubts that 400 is an achievable number
-
The bulls in the blues are way down this year. At least thats what I was told. :dunno: :dunno:
-
there was a pack of six wolves spotted up on middle point 2 weeks ago. :yike:

Thanks for the response. I have the rifle tag and I am doing some homework and looking for any leads I can find. Any and all would be appreciated.

I can't say much about the area except that I drove around a little up there this past Winter with my cousin and saw the biggest bull I've ever seen. That thing completely took my breath away and made me forget that there was a camera nearby that I WISH I would have picked up to snap a picture. I'll never forget that bull that we stared at for a couple minutes at very close range from the pickup! I wouldn't be surprised if that's the "400 bull" you heard about!
-
didnt two 400's come out of there last year?
-
i'm a dayton archery tag holder. i feel like i have one of the golden tickets to willy wonka's choclate factory. i dream of a 400 class herd bull surounded by 380 satelites. :chuckle:

Your in for a big surprise , its just not like that. How bout 350 clss bull with 300 satelites running all around with a few good bulls in the 360-380 range.
-
:yeah:
-
As I've said all along, 350, to me is the mendoza line. Anything under thaqt and it's a wasted tag. I was within 15 yards of one in March that would definitely push the 400 mark. Whether he survived the winter or not, I don't know, but there are some HUGE bulls out there.........You just need to be willing to put in the time and actually hunt. :twocents:
-
370, thought you'd like to drool a bit before the hunt starts :P
-
Drool? I would have let him walk.

yes i realize that. that's why it was a dream. shooting a big bull in this unit will not be easy. some guys dont shoot anything while others shoot rag horns. a very small percentage come out with bulls like yours and travis's. ive spent a fair amount of time in the unit already and have focused mostly on the access, skid roads, trails and drainages. ill spend next week on locating a good one hopefully.

Come on Charlie, let's see a picture of the finished product.

What area of the unit did you see him. I know it was winter and he probably is not even closeto there just wondering. Private or public? Thanks

Congratsthat is an amazing bull!!!

It will never get finished :chuckle:

Ut oh, BL brought out the big elk photo... :chuckle:

During archery I always see and call in the biggest bulls ( of course never had a bull tag at the time) in the remote drainages in that unit. Very frustrating when the big boys are chasing away the spikes. Still very exciting.
Good luck. Find the nastiest stuff away form the roads.

It was only a few miles out of Dayton on the road to Ski Bluewood and it was on private property. No doubt that bull lives somewhere up in the hills when the snow is gone.

AAARRGH some of you need to be gagged and tied to a rail and then ran out of the state. All the specific info sharing on this particular area. Those that hunt it really could use a break on all the pressure. There is no other unit so whored out over the net than the Dayton unit. Gather your info with boot leather, you are inviting too many casual weekenders to mess weeks of scouting up that local guys have invested time into. Give it a break.

Dude, you need to chill out. The Dayton is not the only unit that is whored out over the net, that is kind of the purpose of these forums. :'(
-
How about a photo and a strip map to your favorite hunting spots then. Please be sure to mark all the water tanks, streams and wallows. If you have waypoints saved of any kills pm me with those as well. Thanks for sharing in advance. 8)
-
So robrunwild -- I may have missed it, but do you have a big bull tag in there this year - is that why your so sensitive about people discussing the unit....just curious - not trying to stir the pot.
Good luck Dave, looks like your headed in the right direction. Hope you down a stud!
-
Nope not me...just feeling extremely crowded. As stated in the earlier post a 400 class animal in that unit is very rare. Our party had a tag holder 2 years ago and he ate it because of massive over reporting on class standards. Even those that had decades of hunts in the area were telling him to drop any balanced 7 he saw. He passed several shooters. Last season he was saying woulda, coulda, shoulda...
-
It is a little crowded up there this year. Geeeeeezee, kill one State record over here and everyone comes-a-runnin'... :chuckle:
-
Yeah, it's a little crowded, but still a lot less than any other unit in the state. I saw a couple bulls in the 350-360 range, and maybe know of one in the 380 range, and also heard there may be one over 400. :dunno:
-
I know where there is a 400 but sorry I can"t share
-
Yea and I saw a 448 there too!! :chuckle:
-
well boys, i'll tell ya. 98% of land in there is private and the landowners are MEAN, i havnt seen an elk in there in 6 years, never even heard one. what is public is all vertical and only wolves live there and there are hunters spaced out every 17 yds, it is horrible, if i were you i would stay away, far away. i hear there are 400 class bulls all over the place around st. helens :chuckle:
-
I agree with Jim... ;) LOL :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
A video me and my buddies took last year in this unit. Enjoy..

-
Are you guys trying to give Robrunwild a heart attack....? :chuckle:
-
Yep...Mental Exercises..LOL ..then every bull he comes across will be like..nope not big enough...nope not big enough...then he realize he should have shot the first one he saw..LOL :chuckle: Look at it some more I dare ya... :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
Robrunwild doesn't have a branched antler tag this year. I was talking about you guys posting the names of the roads in the unit... :chuckle: Rob got some pretty good video of one a couple of year's ago. I should try to get him to post it if he still has it.
-
There are a few guys on here with good tags..I bet they all can't sleep...LOL :chuckle:

No....these bulls were filmed by us 2nd week of November last year. Agnew bull was taken much earlier.....ironically the 3 or 4 other bulls running with these two big guys looked like dinks, but in reality, they were all probably 330-350 class....lol. Just looked small compared to Brutus (what we named the bigger one) and his buddy. Impressive to say the least. We watched them for about 1/2 hour at 75-80 yards. Back in the 90's while hunting whitetails in November, not too far from this location as a crow flies in another drainage, my son and I saw an 8x8 and a 7x7 above us on a ridge in the snow that were both bigger than these two guys.... the biggest bulls I have ever seen dead or alive.....and didn't have my camera. :bash:
-
dude Your giving away your secret flipper spot....lol

To bad I shot him already. ;)

I drew East Wenaha last year, and my hunting partner drew Dayton this year. We hunted the complete season both years. There is no question about it, Dayton is superior to East Wenaha. I cant say anything about West Wenaha. But I do know this... East Wenaha is good for 300-320 bulls with a possiblilty of seeing a 350 ( I never did and there were four of us in there).

1bullelk,
Hey,this is Mark. That was a fun hunt no doubt. I haven't gotten all of the picturesa of your bull yet, but look forward to seeing the rest of them. Wished I could have stayed and held them in my hand. I will have more internet access now that I just picked up a netbook from AT&T. Love this thing. I am in Kansas working a nuke outage right now, but would love to meet up with you to hold onto them antlers. You can PM me if you like and I will get you the rest of my contact info.
Cleveland Steamer ;),
Call me when you get a chance. I will be on my cell.
Later,
Mark

Were there any good muzzleloader or archery bulls taken?
