I found this one while feeding cows last Feb. She slipped between the bales and was flat and frozen stiff.

That is all I could figure. Probably after the top bales were removed, the remaining ones were fresher and not covered in snow.

every year In SE Idaho the deer would eat their way into the stacks and they would collapse on them..Yep - they do the same thing around here. It makes them easy prey for cougars when they're in the bales like that. This winter 4 were killed by cougar while in the bales at the ranch where I photograph pheasants. I don't think any died this year at this place by getting stuck between the bales.
