Title: Where to start and what went wrong?
Post by: PNWCOONASS on August 31, 2009, 07:24:19 AM
Hey guys, haven't been around for a while.  Been concentrating on retiring from the Navy and stuff.  Trying to grow up and all that stuff.

Anyways,

I went out yesterday to shoot my Bighorn that I had installed a Williams PS on last year.  I hadn't shot it since installing it just after last years season.  I walked off 75 yards, put up a target (paper plate, I didn't want to drag a full size target out there), loaded up the gun 100 grains, with a 310 PB.  I had the sight at "zero" (half up and half across), took aim and blam.  Nothing on the target.  did the same thing again, still nothing.  Thinking it may be me, loaded it up again, handed the gun over to the wife (before I get yelled at for that, she is a very good shoot.  Grew up in MT hunting elf, prones and deer.  She has killed more than me) and still nothing on paper.

I checked all the mouting screws, all seem to be tight and good with the gun as well.  Suggestions, please.

i'm going to try and get out again on wednesday to sight it in again.  This time I'll bring a normal size target with a stand to see where it is falling.

thanks guys, pete

Is it possible to take out the breach plug and bore sight it? or if not that move in to 25 yards and try a bigger target.

Bore sight, I"m not sure.  Maybe someone else can answer that.  Moving up the 25 yards sounds good.

Yes, definitely take your first shot with a new sight at 25 yards. Get it on at 25 then move it out to 100. Or, you might even try 50 or 75 yards before you stretch it all the way to 100.

Somewhere between right on to about 1 inch high, depending on where you want it at 100.

I had to get a new front sight on my Bighorn when I changed the rear to the Williams Peep. I did not have enough adjustment to get it down where I needed it. Try starting at 25 yards like others have posted and work your way out.

I've just started shooting a Bighorn.  The other day I had my first "familiarization" fire and didn't blow myself up!  I had fun shooting it.  At the blackpowder shop in Puyallup I was told to sight in at 25 yards which should be two inches high and on at 100.

What did you replace the front sight with?

Knight sent me a new front sight which was a little taller if I remember right. It is a green fiber optic.

Do you have an numbers on that new front sight.  Espeically since Knight is or has closed.

Use a bigger target (plywood) and start between  25-50 yds. This will allow you to at least see where you are hitting.

I do not have the part number. I would try shooting at a closer range first. I can measure how tall it is if you need that info.

Hi Folks,

I just got a williams peep sight too. I also have a knight bighorn (.54). Anyhow, i researched what the most accurate bullet for that gun is( on the knight website). They said 325 gr. bullet. So I ordered the 325 gr. sabots from barnes bullets through cabelas. i used 2 60 grain pyrodex pellets. i then went to the range....could not hit a 2 foot by 3 foot piece of plywood. i raised the site 4 clicks and could hit the bottom of the target/board. time ran out so i need to go back and see if i can raise it enough to be on. i also wonder if the charge i'm using is too hot. i'm using the 2 X 60 gr. pellets becuase I have a whole box(game with the gun 2nd hand). Does anyone have a winning load/bullet for the .54 bighorn? Thanks in advance.
