Any moose pics from you guys out there?

No pics, but I was just talking with a friend this weekend about WA moose. He and his wife spend a week this Fall at Stehekin, the little town at the NW end of Lake Chelan. The locals tell them that there are now moose living up there. Actually several are seen regularly near or in town.  8)

That's supposed to be a nice little town. I've always wanted to take the ferry up the lake in the summer to do some mountain climbing right near there. It certainly is fairly secluded.

The only Moose I have ever seen in Wa was near Liberty Creek in the Spokane area.

I saw a nice bull at the head of gold creek, which would make sense if they are in theStehekin area.  There have been several in the beaver creek starvation area for years, even before the big hunts started over in the NE corner.  That may have changed now as that is all barbecued.  the same with the Pasayten which had some up Andrews Creek, another barbecue.

This guy was basically in Washington as I was standing in Idaho when I took the pic.  We were right on the line.  I took my wife over and we grunted this fellow up.  We stayed a teh elkins resort.  A very romantic place if you want to get the wife to tag along.  Bring your credit card though, dinner isn't cheap, but its awesome.

My brother took pics of a bull moose swimming in lake chelan when he was up fishing near stehekin.  He lives in Manson and says the sightings are becoming more frequent.

I was sitting in my truck this AM waiting for the crew to show-up for work when a yearling came within 15 feet of me busy eating the fruit tree buds. She was very funny wanting to lay down and gnaw on the grass surrounding the tree bases. As the crews started showing up making noise and watching her she moved to another area but kept on chowing down.
Beautiful winter coat on the critter...long silver guard hairs on the back,  dark brown legs and shoulders and of course those l-o-n-g legs.

I see moose off and on alot here in the Colville area. I work in the woods but I don't carry a camera with me while I'm working. I usually see them when its least expected (like in the middle of the road on a blind curve). I saw a cow and a calf today in that least expected place. Fortunately I stopped before they turned the work truck into folded metal. I sure would like to draw one of those permits. Filling that tag would be a slam dunk.

Boneaddict, did you draw the 49 north moose permit a few years ago?  Just wondering if you were the person that I sent moose info for thru Bob D.

Nope, The Selkirk tag, in 2002 if I remember right.

Well, wrong answer for me. I heard the Selkirk tag can be challenging to fill. Let's hear the story and see some pics anyway.

Awesome pics!  I've thought abou those sage brush moose hunts, man that would be cool.

My Selkirk story in full is in the Washington state record book if you are interested in all of the details.  Basically My Dad and I went over, it took a day or two to locate some moose.  I found the one I wanted and called him and a couple more in.  It was absolutely incredible.  Lessons learned, shoot one closer to the road than I did and watch out for Grizzlies.  They love moose almost as much as I do.  In the end I ended up with my first Boone animal that I got with a bow and won the Glen St Charles award with the WSB.  It started a fever for moose that I'm afraid I will never loose.  Since then I have been on two major hunts in Idaho, and one in Alaska, all succesful with very nice animals.

He had weak fronts, but his paddles were enormous.  I told my Dad to get ready, that he would be there in about 10 seconds.  When he rounded the corner of brush at full speed coming to kick my ass, I about Cra#@$$ a load.  I checked his fronts, though I probably would have had him dump him anyway.  Shoot.....SHOOT.......SHOOT HIM   It was the longest 3 seconds in my life.

How wide is the widest part of the paddle on your dad's bull and how long,  or on yours...just trying to compare.

I'll get back to you on that.  His was a bit uneven which hurt his score something fierce.  Otherwise he would have been a complete 180 bull, which is darn hard to come by.  If you are going by gross scores than he was indeed in the mid 180s.

is that southwest of nordman, ID and not too far from a little lake?.

I know of a few areas that hold stupid amounts of moose. we see 100 to 1 moose over elk here in spokane area. they are pretty much a pain in the butt for us.

I was glassing a hill in december and could see 9 respectable bulls at one time in my spotter......a couple were dandys. One thing for sure if I get drawn it will be a score for sure.

Thats actually North of Nordman.  Moose all around there though.  I would love to see that many bulls at that time of year.  It would have shed hunting written all over it.

Thank you!  Are you guys getting sick of moose pics yet?
I was questioning my sanity with this little guy.  He was camped on a cow and would't budge, so I decided to go to him to see if I could get some pics.  This picture was taken on 1x or less than real life so to speak, and I was a long ways from the nearest tree.  I hadn't expected him to come quite that fast since he had been holding steady.  I guess I could have pummeled him with my camera.

I can tell you what was going throgh my mind when I took this picture.  I was like UNBELIEVABLE.  I can't believe this just happened.  I'm not sure Idabooner was thinking anything at this point.  I did tell him to hold on after I took this picture as another moose was coming in and I started talking to him.  I think the quote was "Knock that crap off, we don't need another one in here."  I of course didn't listen and thats when the previous bull from page one or back there a ways came in.

The little guy walked so close to me I could have touched him with my rifle, he never knew I was there, he was to busy keeping track of Boneaddict, a few minuets later I think he heard the big guy coming because he just turned and walked off.
I was thinking what a nice one, then I started to realize what had just taken place and that the  fun was over.

That's one fine looking animal. If I am ever blessed with the chance to go after a moose you can bet that I will make a campaign of it and will have the time of my life. It's inspiring to see your photos because it lets the rest of the folks who will keep putting in year after year know that they might still have a chance to taste some Washington Moose.

I'd say it's a good day when you can be surrounded by magnificent and tasty creatures like those. As long as they don't get too close and do any damage that is :)

Post by: boneaddict on May 28, 2007, 06:38:12 AM
I can honestly say that any moose looks big at 15 feet.  This bull will always be shaded in a little gray for me.  I thought he was a heck of a lot bigger.  This is my Idaho bull.  I stepped out of the truck and gave a bull grunt into this very nice looking basin, right on the Washington line.  NOTHING.  I decided to give a cow call, and got an instant answer.  I ran back to the truck and grabbed the 06, and told Dad what was happening.  I ran up this skid road and got into position.  I cow called again, and here he come.  He was actually in Washington when he started my way.  Just like on a string, here he come.  I had two shooting lanes, one down each direction of the skid trail.  He kept calling.  Whenever he would stop I would utter a little girlie music, and here he come.  It was tremendously thick, and he just bulldozed his way through.  That is an incredible exhiliration, by  the way.  I got a glimpse of antler and saw palm, and he looked to be fairly wide.  I was afraid he was going to wind me as he was at about 15 feet charging by me in the thick stuff.  I saw an opening you could fit a popcan through and when I saw black shoulder, I touched off the 06.  He whirled, ran about 30 feet and dropped.  We gave him a second or two, then I could hear movement as he was walking away.  I thought no way.  I tried calling, but nothing, he was going DOWN THE HILL.  Those are swear words in moose hunting.  I went after him.  "He just kept going"  I thought NO WAY, so I went back to where he was when I shot.  We started tracking.  I went to right where I thought he dropped and THERE HE WAS.  There had been two bulls.  What I can determine is they had just fought.  He had two broken tines and a bloodied ear.  He whooped the dudes butt, then came in for the spoils.  In this instance, its why he came to a cow call, but totally ignored another bull grunt.  Now the gray area.  It was a tremendous hunt, with my Dad at my side, but I had shot a smaller bull.  I didn't think that much of it as I thought I could hunt them again in 7 years.  Idaho IS a once in a lifetime state like Washington , ONLY if you are succesful.  You can hunt them again after a waiting period if you don't fill your tag.  That will teach me to read my regs better.  The hunt was awesome and I won't ever forget the good times.  We got the big one the next year that we had been after, so it turned out.

That panhandle is extremely thick stuff.  I had several bulls RIGHT in front of me, but couldn't see them.

boneaddict, I'm with ya when it comes to moose hunting. I have the fever too!

As you may recall, I shot a 45" moose in Idaho in '05.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi177.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fw207%2Fjontimmer%2FDSC021758x10.jpg&hash=ed26e302107e41bff7c19e45f9706fb800017f02)

Last year, a friend of mine drew a tag. I went along with him and he got a 51" moose on the second day.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi177.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fw207%2Fjontimmer%2FIMG_4737.jpg&hash=5f8d63c750cc739423404d85ffb0c0ee6f7ea4cf)

Now this year a different friend of mine drew for the same area! So I plan on going with him. We hope to find this moose that my friend and I spotted last year while scouting. I'm pretty sure no one got him.

I did recall, thanks for getting the pics on here.  Thats a very nice bull.  Good luck with your friend this year.  I'm sure I will be over there with camera in hand, and the birchbark in the other, even if no one draws.  Moose hunting is the most incredible thing ever.  Does you r buddies have a forked brow on that one side, or did he get nailed on that.  It doesn't really matter, still a very impressive bull.  I can remember that velvet picture.  That bull is tremendous.

jtim thanks for the compliment, your moose is very nice also, I like that antler conformation better than the wide flat ones. The velvet moose is a whopper, check the rear end on that guy, he looks like he could be from north of the Yukon.
Title: Re: MOOSE
Post by: Timber on May 31, 2007, 08:59:28 PM
It's only got the one forked brow. He knew that when he when he shot it though. Like you said, it doesn't really matter. Overall it is a very impressive bull and one that would be hard to turn down. I don't think he has gotten it officially scored yet, but by our calculations with just the one forked brow it will net under 140.

Here are some we called in after I shot my bull.

Nice moose pic's everyone. Keep them coming. I'm hoping for a hit on the moose permit this year. I have 12 points for moose, sheep, and goats for this state. I suppose that alot of other people do too, so that just cancels out the better odds. I'll be putting in for a Wyoming moose permit next year with 7 points there. I'm close to getting drawn there with that many preference points.

Very cool pictures Jackelope.

Here is a washington moose pic I pulled off of the Boone site a year ago.  If anybody recognizes these boys or this bull, get them on here.  Great moose.  He scored way better than I thought he would, but this is the only pic I have seen on it.  Very nice moose.

Obviously spread isn't everything.  I've had several e-mails from folks wanting to know about field judging moose, both Shiras and Alaskan.  Do you guys want some moose pics posted(not necessarily mine) and talk about characteristics, to shoot or not etc.

Does anyone out there have a shoulder mount of a shiras at home?  If so, could you measure from the eyeball to the end of the nose for me and let me know what the distance is?  Also ear tip to tip.  Thanks.  These measurements will give me a guesstimate of width for my buddy.

The guy on the left of that picture works for the same agency that I do. He works in Deer Park so I don't talk to him much. The guy on the right is the one with the permit. He performed a drive by shooting while it was bedded in a clearcut in the Three Forks unit a few years ago.

Goldtip, orange is only required if it coincides with modern firearm season deer or elk. I have often taken off extra gear and clothes before my pictures were taken so I too have quite a few pic's of me with critters when I didn't have my orange on. Maybe that's what they did I don't know.

Post by: boneaddict on August 31, 2007, 08:45:17 AM
Mine is 41 and Idabooners is 46 I think.  Both have shrank dramatically.  Here is some DAMN good advice for any of you concerned about scores.  My Alaskan bull shrank 4 inches in outside spread from when it hit the ground and now.  3 inches of that was AFTER the drying period ended.   Shiras probably wouldn't be affected as much as they have less flared antlers, but even that, my Alaskan bull was more upright than spread out.  Get those babies measured as fast as legal.

72 I think, or over 70 anyways.  It has some nontypical stuff that you really don't see in those pics.  I have his other pics somewhere here that I slobber on almost monthly.  LUCKY SOB.  FIrst time mooser and look what he brings home.  Just kidding him.  VEK works EXTREMELY hard for his kills.  Hopefully he chimes in here sometime soon.  The turkey went and moved up there so is probably chasing a sheep or moose right now.

He was a *skosh* over 70" 4 days after the kill (sept 2005), but has since shrunk to 68.5".  I've thrown down a hell of a gauntlet for myself, with a 70" first bull.  I should probably hang up the moose canoe for good and be happy, but stupid is as stupid does.  Hard to top that, and hard to hang something like that in a house with 8' ceilings.  That's a good problem to have, I guess.  Going back in there next weekend, with a new victim partner.

Here is a picture of the fellow.
I can't believe its been a year already.  A year ago right now, Dad and I were parked at the Canadian customs trying to get all of the paperwork done to take our guns across.  They wanted serial numbers for rifles.  We COULDN"T find on on one of the guns right off.  Pretty scary when you are parked at the border.  We took it apart and found it under the stock.  To top it all off they were strip searching a vehicle next to us piling crap everywhere.  I was dreading that they would do that to us.  Thank God they didn't.  Not that we had anything to hide, but its not like they re-pack everything for you.

I was in a 50+ inch area.   I thought I had seen three brows.  I must have caught that little point or whatever.  Its hard to say witht he adrenaline pumping and a big bull coming through a walll of alders too thick for man to go through. ( I know I tried.)  He would swing his head throwing crap one way then the next.  He looked over 50 to me anyway.  Damn glad he was.

Yep, I would hate to hang my neck on that one as well.  Lots of official folks looked at it as I had to go through several border crossings and such.  None of them ever questioned it. They do take their jobs and wildlife VERY seriously up there.  Heck, even the locals.  Its interesting driving around with that in the back of your truck up there and Northern BC.  Try to pull up to a gas station.  There was always a crowd.  I pulled into Seattle and many didn't even notice, some that did gave me a thumbs up and many gave me the middle finger.  I like their world up there.

This is all my opinion.....

first of all don't shoot until he stands up.  Moose tend to stand, look you over before they bolt.  You can shoot at that time.  They are not like whitetails that just blow out of the bed.  When he looks at you, you need to confirm the second brow is forked, if you care about scoring well.  Other than that SHOOT.  He was wonderful palms for a shiras, and lots of points.  Spread is hard to tell, but with that mass and that palmation, odds are he is fairly wide.
Title: Re: MOOSE
Post by: boneaddict on September 08, 2007, 09:43:26 AM
This bull is your more typical shiras that gets busted.  It would be hard to tell without him turning to look at you.  Don't let that long sword point get you all excited.  He lacks in amount of points, and the palms don't look real long.  You need to see the spread on this one and also the brows.  I wouldn't shoot if I was trohpy hunting

Great photo NOBARK...Thats COOL!

The score is finally in. AGAIN....best advice I can give if you are interested in score is to get your animal measured as soon as it is possible with the dryin gperiod.  He lost just short of 4 inches of width.  I just think thats amazing.  Anyhow attached is his score sheet. He grossed 190  at the time of the kill, and is now 184 and change, with a net if 179 Pope and young.

Some notes on measureing.......you don't always get credit for the largest part of the palm.  My moose illustrates that.  Its the most parallel line from the brow to the top, the most parallel to the inside edge fo the palm.  I lost close to two inches of prospective bone on this one.

No Sky thats an Alaskan bull.  All I need now is a nice Canadian to complete the "grand slam" of pope and young bulls.

He is indeed JDB.  I always enjoy when I get to talk to him.

SKY, I've always lived in Washington.  Believe it or not, I thought it had three brows as I knew he would be pushing the 50 inch limit.  In the field, or green he was just about 54 inches.  He shrank a TON!  He grossed over 190 and now is 184 and change.  Thats alot of shrinkage.

I would have loved to have mounted him Michelle, but thats a long frisckin ways to carry out a moose cape.  I figured I had enough moose mounts in the house, a good antler mount would do just fine.  This thing is so massive and heavy, I'm not even sure how I am going to hang him still.  Man this is a heavy rack.

Well if you can't figgue out how to get it hung up.......... I guess you'll just have to cut them up and make a coffee tabe out of them.  :chuckle:  :P

I can always find you a cape if you decide to mount him.  Capes that big raw are spendy.

I didn't want to put him on a plaque, though that would be the easiest.  I was thinking about running a wire or cable around the bottom of both bases to form a tight loop like you would hang a picture frame, but with a little heavier gage stuff, then put an industrial hook in the wall to hook it too, then cover up the cable for the most part with a leather covering over the skull cap.  Any other ideas or am I inventing the wheel.

They are an incredible animal. I shot a 66" off the Yukon river on a self guided hunt. Just getting the animal cut up to be able to get him back to camp is a task in it's self. Besides having a grizz come into camp and steal a side of ribs it was a total adrenaline rush. Loved it so much I am heading back up this fall!!

Thatsawesome Sky, I have a ton of respect for anyone that does a DIY hunt in Alaska, and is successful at it.  it was unbelievable work.  We shot ours a LONG ways  from the road.  Do you have pics to get on here?  I'll have to go back to check to see if there are any in this thread.  Its been awhile since I read through the whole thing.  I would love to see any pics if you have any, even if its just the anlers at home.  There are nothig like moose bones.

I will have to dig some pictures up. I drew one of the Kopyukuk control unit moose tags. We flew into Galena and had a transporter take us down the Yukon and up the Koyukuk river where we camped and hunted a slough off the main river. It was a blast my buddy lives in Anchorage and is a gunsmith/guide on Kodiak for brownies. The amount of wildlife up there is incredible. I would definately suggest it to anyone. But like you said they are not an animal you want to pack any amount of distance if you dont have to.

BONE REALLY appreciates the story.   THATS AWESOME.  Man I love this site.  Better than any dnag magazine.  You just sealed the deal man MOOSE 2009 or bust.   That is so awesome.  WHAT A HUNT!  I can relate to every thing you wrote, from the wolves to the bears....ok maybe nt being trapped under a moose hip in a :chuckle: I'd been laughing so hard I would have drowned in the slough.  DANG.  Having cut up 4 of those monsters I BET that was nasty on that bank.  There are all sorts of ideas on how to handle that until you are there and all you have is your knife, and a small piece of rope.  Moose don't float very well either.  Damn, I just read your story out loud to my family, and will be reading it several more times.  What an awesome bull.  I commented that that bull would probably have to end up in the garage (little fight right now between the Mrs. and me)  She is at her limit with moose antlers in the house.  After hauling one of those in from 9 miles out, they become pretty precious.

Well I guess the women just can't see it from our side of the tracks. Heck I would love to have my deer, sheep, elk, antelope, and moose mounts in my front room or extra bedroom but my wife doesn't seem to see my side. So out they go in the garage in my workout room. She wonders why I love to spend so much time out there. Nothing like sitting back and reminiscing!! I was tempted on doing a shoulder mount of my moose but that would really take up some room. I helped a friend of mine put his shoulder mount up in his house. It pretty much took up the whole wall. He had a chair underneath it and you just looked up at this ominous object protruding 4 feet out from the wall. I thought it was awesome but us hunters appreciate things a little different than others I guess.  :chuckle:

honestly I have to cut her some slack.  I have lots of mounts in the house, but there is always room for more.  :chuckle:  I will just need to get that building built and then throw the next hunting washington get together.  Its frustrating how hard that Alaskan moose hunt was and how much I love to look at the bones.  Once I get that buildingbuilt, she will wonder why I am never inside.  Yoou're right about that.  Thanks again for the story.  Thats an incredible trophy.  I love how the mountcame out.  there is no way in hell I could hve carried outhis head though.

The house we live in now has big vaulted ceilings and when we first moved in I said would it not be cool to have a big mount up there on the wall.

Well her reaction was not the one I thought it was going to be so I dropped it, but now ten years later in this house and being married for 20, she is the one saying would that not be cool to have a bear rug on that wall and a couger sitting on a fake rock outcrop and a big elk head over there, now all I have to do is learn to shoot something to put up there.

Its actually pretty dang cheap as a non-resident once you get up there.  Its the travel costs that kill you.  The tag was Only in the $400's.  I realize that isn't cheap, but compared to the ones you have to draw around here, such as Idaho, $1900, Wyoming $1500, Utah $1600 etc.  Pretty cheap moose!

I took my wife hunting once.  i recommend it for everyone.

We went up and down hills and it was a hot day.  Really miserable.  We saw very few deer.  When we did spot a group about 200 yards away, my wife asked me, "why are they running?"  "They can't possibly be running from us, we are too far away."  That day she learned that deer can see and smell a long way away.  She replied, "this is tough to get a deer."  "I thought you just walked out in the woods and shot the first one you saw."

Because of the miserable conditions and lack of animals, she didn't have much fun.  That was the last time she ever asked to go with me...  It was perfect.  Now I get to go with my dad and cousins without fear that the wife will want to join.  So if you take your wife hunting, make sure it's a miserable day.  Take her to an area with no animals.  Don't pack a lunch and make it as awful as possible.  Then you are set for life.

Montana archery elk hunting in 06 I found this bull on my to one of my honey holes. I stopped and snapped some pics and watched him feed off into the tall brush, I saw several that year but this is the only one I decided to get on film. I hunted all day until dark and headed back about 1 1/2 hours after dark. As I approached this area I saw a truck with his flashers on pulled off to the side. I stopped and asked the two guys if everything was alright and they explained how they were heading home, locals, and hit a moose. I told them I had seen a small bull that morning right near there and told them it was probably the same one. I got the camera out and showed them the pics and they said it looked like the same one and that he was lying in the bushes still alive but with a broken back. They asked if I had a gun, which I did, so I went over and put a .223 in its head to finish it off. I hope this doesnt fall under the incriminating myself thread HuntWa ;) Steam was billowing out of their new Dodge quad cab so I asked them if they wanted a ride into town, about 40 miles. The old guy was a retired school teacher in the town and was out hunting with his son. Dropped him off at home to call a wrecker, ended up being a very nice old guy. I stopped this year to check to see if anything was left and to show my brother, the skeleton was still there but the head and rack were gone, go figure. I bet they came back and took it along with the backstraps. Anyway here are a few pics.

This is the brush pile the moose emerged from.  He came out from the right hand side circling me.  I stuck one into him and he turned right at me.  Sort of like that video that was out this last year of the bowhunter getting run over.  Anyway, becuase of the dip between us, he stopped just down from me, faltered, turned and ran back and died right where Idabooner is hunkered down to the bottom left.  If my memory is correct 29 yards to the shot.(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv47%2Fboneaddict%2Fbonesbucks%2Fwheremooseemerged-1.jpg&hash=4fee65b78c0de3f7f0b4b3859159de6cffd9e585)

Is that the same story where Dwight Schun was bow hunting in the N.W. Territories or the Yukon and stuck that bull that nearly ran him over? I would have had to clean my pants out after that one. It's amazing  how close you can call them in during the right conditions. You can be standing along a tree grunting flashing a scapula and have them come right in on you.

No huntnphool, thats an Alaskan bull.   Moose tend to come in to about 30 yards then hang up, or rather circle to get downwind.  Common for all animals I suppose, but that seems to be about their buffer.  Not always the case obviously.  Yep Sky, the was it.  Good video.  That boy was lucky.  Even to be stepped on by a moose would or could be critical.  I like Dwight.  Very nice man and that boy knows his bowhunting.

That gets me thinking, I wonder if a cougar would try to take down a fully mature moose?  I would think the moose would stomp him but they do take down elk quite easily...

Back in my limited days of working in the USFS, we came upon a cougar snow kill.  The cougar had taken out three elk within 50 yards.  We weren't sure if the others watched as he killed the first one and then he went after them or what the situation was.  From the tracks, it looked like one cougar.  What a bloody snowy mess.

I doubt cougars mess with moose much.  There big tactic with elk is snapping their necks.  Can't imagine that happening on a moose.  Not real easy to puncture their skulls either like they do deer.  Wolves on the other hand...hamstring them then eat them alive.  Such pleasant creatures.  Make s you want to go give them a hug. :guns:

Way cool.  Need to nail a set into a tree.  Just have to protect them to keep the squirrels and weather off.

I suppose Miles, when I see something like this on our trip and I pass out, you'll leave me out there to feed the wolves, and being a good shed hunting partner and all, you'll make sure th eantler makes it back safe.  I guess I can't expect anything less.
Images like this just about put me down for the count.

I must admit, I don't understand the whole shed thing.  Not making any inferences to others that do, but I see no fun in it and I can't figure out why.  I guess I don't have an emotional connection to the animal that had that horn?  Maybe it's because my wife wouldn't let me put it anywhere but my garage?  I dunno?  I'll stick with taking pictures.

I'm with you Pope.  I'll pick up elk sheds because my dog likes to chew on them, or I give them to call makers.  It has to be a pretty spectacular deer shed for me to bring home, and I haven't found one that meets my criteria.  Now that I have kids though, maybe my attitude might change a bit.

THATS COOL!  First of all, apparantly your family never sleeps........course I don't either obviously or I wouldn't notice.   I have seen the pics of the IDaho moose.  I had no idea where she was from.  I assumed Alaska.  Thats neat she was down here.  I enjoyed the information. GOOD LINK!

Bone what is really funny is I just noticed your post and I do not even now why I would have been up posting at 2 am I do have to work every morning.

That tree thing is cool time to nail the antlers to the tree to see what will happen in 50 years.

Actually that is my buddies truck, and he hit it at speed, the moose flipped into the air, did a double backflip, and landed smack down in the bed of the truck. No kidding. That is what he did, and it was on a hill too.

He's on here somewhere, but not necessarily these shots.  He definatley belongs in the ultimate moose thread.  That thing in hogzilla.  Permit apps are in.  Maybe his brother is out there.  The big classic way to load a moose back there is with a skidder, and I believe that is what happened with this guy.  What a bull.   I can't believe you  noticed axes in that picture.  There could have been a naked chick standing there and I wouldn't have noticed anything but those antlers.  LOKK AT THE CHARACTER in them.  DANG!

Obviously a place where this bull hasn't done alot of rubbing. Some of those points are nice and long and pointy. Wouldn't pass him up for sure, and to be able to load him whole like that is definately a rarity.Great bull.

I don't think they care, thats why they have small eyeballs I think.  They just plow forward.  I tried to walk through the patch of alder he emerged from and I was like NO WAY.  Even with an ax cutting a tunnel through it, it was no fun.  They are amazing critters.

great great pictures. i have never hunted moose, but soon enough i will.  but i have all sorts of moose stories. i orta be a moose guide here in montana. without fail, i have never had a client not see a bull moose. i personally have a love/hate thing going with them. it never fails that when im packing by myself that i run into an ornery old bull . ive had them walk head on towards me, towards the middle of my string, ive even played ring around the tree with one them. i have been airborne more than once because they spook the living daylights out of my horse.     i have two primary horses, and both hate just the smell of them. no amount of coaxing will settle my critters down when there is a moose in view. wolf, cat, elk, deer, no problem.. moose, well, if i see a moose, i better get to thinking real quick on how to un-%*@! myself.

Ok, reading through these has gotten me in the mood for Moose for sure, great stories and pics for sure.  Here are a few of mine and the kids, granted they are from AK but, a moose is a moose and am hitting it again this year for another Caribou/Moose combo so might as well get into this discussion for the up coming season...   1st is a nice 54" I like it the best of mine cause it was symetrical.  2nd is kids first Spike fork.. 3rd A couple years down the road for the kid....  4th- Sad story, two idiots poached two right next to each other with one muzzle loader, they had time to reload.  Thankfully the meat was salvaged to a church, the horns were auctioned off and the two military guys got the book throw at them from AST.  It was on Fort Richardson Post where I worked with our Fish and Game guy discovering the incident...  By the way on heck of a hunt if you get drawn. low odds but a excellent Moose hunt...  Open to public too!!!!  Last one----is group together hanging out in afield, where my kid had a spike or 50" Youth tag, the 30" didn't care we were there at all.

I have the worst luck at drawing tags in WA. My buddy drew a watershed bull elk tag in 06, and his Dad drew the same tag in 07. My buddy came home with a 342 5/8 7x7, his dad let a boy from another camp shoot a 6x6 and came home empty. They draw a lot of tags, maybe they should apply for Moose!

I just seen this tread for the first time, the Moose on page 13 this first one dated 9/25/2007 I actually was in the tree stand just above this Moose, that was my first encounter with a Moose and It was awesome.  The property belongs to Joe and Jody from Sherman Creek Outfitter in Elk, WA.  The tree stand is called "The Pond Stand"  I heard that moose coming from a long distance while I was sitting in the tree waiting for deer and bear.  The moose hung out with me for about five minutes making all kinds of noises.  This was and incredible experience.
