The Hunt
In the ninth hour of my hunt, my spirits down and the feeling in my butt even lower, I decided that it was time to go back to the truck. I climbed out of my stand and headed down the road. After about a half hour of walking in the 90 degree heat I stopped for a drink of water and a well deserved minute of shade. As I sat there enjoying the smells and sounds of the mountains my mind wandered here and there thinking, as men do, about hunting and everything else in the world. I was in the middle of my day dream when I heard a grunt coming from around the bend. It instantly transported me from my fantasy world as I grabbed my bow and knocked an arrow, not sure what was about to come round to meet me. As I sat and waited for the creature to which the grunt belonged, my hands slippery with sweat start to tremble. There is much to be said of the moment when your eyes and stomach seem to be connected and the two react in unison opening and clenching almost as if they control your brain rather than the other way around. That is a feeling that only a hunter can know as he sees the picture of his quarry first presented to him on the beautiful canvas of natures gallery. In that moment all the world seems to pause and in that moment I "the hunter" am the master of my senses all working in unison to help me preform. As fast as I think it, the bow is drawn and my index finger moves to the release trigger. The string is placed in that ever so familiar place on my cheek, my eyes trained on the green orb that is my twenty yard pin. The bubble in my level moves to the middle of it's inch long home and as all of these things come together a bear walks round the corner. He pauses only for a moment, but a moment is all I need. The arrow passes through him silently only to make a hollow clank on the rocks behind. The bear jumps and runs only but eighty yards before surrendering himself to the mortal blow he was given. The beast is down! With my heart beating out of my chest and sweat dripping from my brow, I lay back on the cool gravel and stare into the sky waiting for my nerves to calm. Once I was settled down I rose to begin the grueling process of following the blood trail of a well placed shot on the bear. Eighty yards later I found him laying in the brush almost as if he were sleeping. His final resting place seemed peaceful like he just lay down for a nap. I set down my pack a retrieved my knife.
Back to the knife
The loner knife worked great I used it to gut and skin the bear and it still had a edge good enough to use again. Today I got my knife from the archery store and returned the other knife to Bruce, he was pleased to hear my story and that his knife preformed so well for me. I recommend his knives to everybody.
