Title: Bettin on Bone
Post by: Lil Bone on September 02, 2009, 04:48:27 PM
Anybody want to bet whether or not my Dad is going to bring home a buck.  He went a bit late because of Dazes game and he was worried about not being in shape.  He always gets one though.  We are waiting to hear from him.

He can shoot pretty good Saylean.  Something happened to his new bow right before he left though so that might be trouble.  He is using his old bow.

I'm at work and on a short leash.  (trying to save 8 hours of vacation for more photogrpahy in November)  Pics are at home, and unfortunately I have to crop a few to keep you eager beavers from raiding my area.  :)
Its kinda ironic really, paying an extra 160 some dollars to extend my hunting then killing him within an hour of first light.  :chuckle:
Not trying to be a tease I promise.
and yes, it was a LOoooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnngggggggggggggg backpack trip.  I'll have pictures posted before I can walk normal again I promise. ;)

I know an airplane circled me.  I think when he flew by and I waved gently so as not to alarm him, he probably thought HOLY *censored*, how did he get up there. LOL

At (https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv47%2Fboneaddict%2Fflat.jpg&hash=c6bcb701e011c2745b07de248acddb329220ddd8)
I found a flatspot for my tent.
It took me 10 hours from the nearest motorized vehicle to get to my spot, fully loaded and fully about ready to puke.  I gave it everything I had in me and then some I borrowed from Idabooner when he wasn't looking, to get here.

I set up camp and then went to glass the basin I was hoping for.  There was more sign down low now and I wasn't seeing any deer at all, so was getting nervous.  It was pretty dry.  I climbed up on the hill and started watching as the sun set.  I was just about to head back to camp when I heard a crashing coming from behind me and coming fast.  A buck appeared running full bore downhill and I was in the trail.  I stuck out my hand to "protect" myself and he stopped about 2 feet short.  It was a nice two point in velvet and in his summer coat.  He basically didn't stop, but more went around me.  Right behind him were two more of the same.  They dispersed in front of me and started feeding.  About that time, more deer started to come out.  No other bucks so far.  I was about to head back to camp and my lovely Mendle Hunters SQUEEKED as I shifted weight and a buck I hadn't seen or heard behind me(Right behind me) snorted.  Had to clean the shorts on that one.  I turned and a nice three was standing there.  He was also still in velvet and mangy looking.  I was kind of disheartened at this point.  I hate velvet, and the capes were worthless.  I went back to camp and enjoyed my night.

So anyways........I got up the next morning at 5 and still wasn't sure what my game plan was going to be.  I made my way up the creek a bit and waited for the light.  I spotted this gentleman first thing.  He was walking across the top of a slide chute and he was big and blocky.  I could tell he was a big buck without even seeing his bones.  As the light got better I could see a rack, so the stalk began.

I had alot of open ground to cover and there were more and more deer showing up above.  I tried to use the contour to cover my movement.  It was dry as heck.  Everytime a deer would come out in the open I would freeze.  It was STRAIGHT UP.  He made his way to a small hole area in the creek that was green and was busy munching.  I finally made it to a small batch of trees.
Title: Re: Bettin on Bone
Post by: boneaddict on September 03, 2009, 03:29:21 PM
I ran out of trees and had nothing but wide open.  He was busy in the creek.  Apparantly he got nervous and he came out and stood broadside where I put the black dot.  It was about 40 yards and I took the shot.  It went in a little far back from where I was aiming but ended up being perfect as he was turned mor than I thought.  It ripped his liver open and exited out above his front shoulder.
4th buck with that arrow  I didn't find it as apparantly it went into the oblivion or buried in the gravel.  He humped up and turned back into the hole.  I grabbed another arrow and waited.  I figured he would die there.  then all of a sudden he walked out above me.  I stuck another Double lunger into him and he dropped like a rock.  He was dead with the first arrow but didn't know it I guess.  You can see where he laid.

Honestly, I wish he'd have been bigger.  Don't we all.  I was hoping for a super monster. BUT......I harvested a mature mule deer, doubtfully would have gotten any bigger.  I did it in his domain, not in the rut in November, and not on the winter range.  I was in the hardest terrain I could imagine to do a stalk, even harder than the desert.    The conditions were perfect.  I was pressed for time, had to slip into about 20 other deer total, including several other bucks. About 15 minutes after I deflated hiim the thermals changed.  I had to cross open terrain and then the gravel rocks.  the creek and walking "like a deer" versus a hunter allowed me to get at least close enough.  He looked at me standing there on top of that mountain and I had enough cool to dump him.  I couldn't let him go.

Taking field photos was a real bear.  I took a couple then tried to adjust the deer and he took off, sliding about 100+feet down the hill and ended up inthe creek.  I thought for sure he was going to bust his bones.  The razor sharp rocks cut his hair a bunch of his cape.

I met him in 1989 and he already had a Gaggle of nice bucks under his belt.. .every year since then he's taken at least one nice one.... I have tried to hang around him enough to get some of it to rub off... but it hasn't worked!  :'(

I started guttin and cuttin and then stored it all in a batch of whitepines that was nearby.  I even did Michelles seamless cape.  I was cussing you by the time I was done Michelle, sorry if your ears were burning.  While I was cutting and guttin, I saw two more bucks walk about 300 yards across from me.

After it was all stashed I decided to finish the climb.  I had never been on top and I wanted to check out a spot I knew there was a big buck.  I had known and figured this is where I would find him..........I was slipping along and all of a sudden about 15 feet in front of me all I saw was horn.  My damn camera (the Lumix byt he way that drowned and was able to salvage thanks to folks on here)

(hound....its because I have kids and a wife) :chuckle:

Thanks!!!!  I wish I could share a lot more of the photos I took to happily show you the whole scene, but I am sure you guys can understand why I want to keep this one to myself a coupel years.  After hauling him out though and burning all my clothes so I didn't have to carry them out, lol, yep this one was a tough one.  My knees and feet may never work again.  it didn't help that it was so freakin warm.  I don't think I have ever sweated so much.  I am still thirsty. :)
I know he won't win any scoring competetions and I am sure he won't take the trophy home this year, but I am excited about him.  Something about a massive muley that just fires up the ole heart.  I was very thankful he was out of velvet.

Yeah, I never really liked that shirt or pair of pants anyway.  The undies were ready to burn LOL.  I eyeballed my jacket seriously.  I need a new one anyway, but I thought twice on that one.  I never wore the thing up there but never head into the high country without it.  By the time I was done, I almost upgraded a sleeping bag too.

I packed several cliff bars, dried mango slices, some jerky, a granola bar for the trail.  I chewed with my right side only with everything and washed it down with lots of water. I had set goals for breaks along the way where I could fuel up on water.  I could keep my water weight done.  I only ran short in one stretch.  One of my biggest issues was sun exposure.  IT WAS HOT.  One stretch there is like NO SHADE.  There was some build up with clouds and that ended up being a saving grace.  i got real shaky once so took one of my water bottles and mixed protein powder and ice tea for a pick me up.  That worked really well.  TASTED nasty, but I was willing to do anything.  I assume I will have Giardia in about 10 days.  Most of the time I had good fresh water, but after I got my deer and did some exploration, I ran out.  There was a seep in the ground and I filled my water bottle from a drip.  I took a big swig and a marmot come shooting out of his burrow right above where I filled up.   :yike:

I'm nearly speachless.  (that doesn't happen often)

" I did it in his domain, not in the rut in November, and not on the winter range.  I was in the hardest terrain I could imagine to do a stalk,"

That says it all right there. You can be proud of that hunt for the rest of your life.

Congratulations on a great adventure, being safe and harvesting a great buck.

You've earned it.

That's a trophy in so many ways, congrats! :)

And I just have to ask...it took you 10 hours to hike in and then you had to hike out with your gear and a big buck (hopefully most of it downhill).  How long on the hike out?  2 trips to take your gear and the meat/horns?  Man, lotta work!

You guys are all very nice in your comments.  Thank you!  Makes a guy feel pretty good.  I was a little disappointed I didn't beat my big buck, thats one of the whole goals to torturing myself.  I just don't know how to do that, as I said in a pm to a friend, I can't hike much farther, go much higher or hunt much harder.  You guys have helped me appreciate this buck even more.

5+ hours out, and it was MISERABLE. It would have taken longer but I would do anything to get that thing off my back and it was virtually a feat to get it off and back on by myself, so in the words of my supportive wife, one step at a time.   My knees and feet had a hard time with the heavy pack.  I've been dealing with a bum knee my whole life, adventures like this always bring it to life, and planar facitis this summer from being on my feet at work.  I was way out of shape.  I did some biking, some running and just overall I work a lot at home and am on my feet all day.  I was not nearly the shape I needed to be in, but those that know me know that when I set my mind to something I have the determination or drive of a grizzly bear.  It helps to have a lot of mountain man blood running through my veins and the legs of a moose. :)

Nice job Doug!  I'm curious, what time did you spot the buck and how far away were you and what time did you arrow him?  Just want to get an idea of the kind of patience to get that close, especially from downhill when the thermals are starting to rise in the morning and he's on an open hillside...

Michael
Title: Re: Bettin on Bone
Post by: boneaddict on September 04, 2009, 11:37:02 AM
He was about 700 feet in elevation above me(I am not sure about yards distance)...a long ways.... and I spotted him about as early as you could see an animal as I was sitting there glassing waiting for it to get light.  I went as hard and as fast as I could straight up at him while he was distracted.  He was near water so I was hoping that would help with sound.  The patience came in being vigilent on all of the surroundings because I kept spotting more and more deer and I knew if ONE of them blew out, he would be gone.  A doe and twin fawns almost screwed me up, but they decided to flee in the opposite direction and they did it in a fairly calm manner.  He noted them, but went back to feeding.  I got lucky there.  I was pressed for time with the thermals as I knew they would switch as soon as the sun hit the hill.  Sure enough they did shortly after I anchored him.  The hardest part was when I got into the gravel.  Crunching gravel makes noise that travels FAR......

I'm glad to see that he didn't have velvet and the crappy red stringy mangy cape (I hate the looks of early season deer) In fact my dad and I are heading out this weekend to use our multi season tags and I really didn't want to shoot any deer this early unless they are a monster because of my dislike for their looks but yours has changed my mind ;)

I agree Gobble.  i would like to have seen my deer in about a week.  He had been rubbing quite a bit in the white pines and that sap turns em nice and black.  His undersides of his mains are almost black.   I love dark boned critters.

I'm not sure what I am doing in Idaho yet.  They really jacked their tag costs.  :(  I might just end up taking some pics for you guys with some local bulls and spending some time withthe girls and their sports.  Its all in a tight knot in the guts right at the moment.  I have been looking forward to elk and wolves for a lONG time and for a camping trip with Booner.  With my recent tooth activity, the crown, I would probably have to credit card it all.  Its pretty easy to ching ching it, but I am trying not to do that now.  I get a lot of enjoyment out of taking pics for you guys especially, and thats a lot cheaper.  I don't really need any more taxidermy projects anyway.

I'd like to shoot one about late November.  Right now their hides look like crap for what I want.  Even if you had a tag, I would think it would be just a matter of letting the air out of one and feeling the satisfaction.  Knowing the animal, I am sure they will be a bit harder to find now.

Yeah, you outed us.  We know for a fact Doug kills his critters at night, with a .22 and a spotlight, out the window of his Subaru Justy, trespassing on private land, out of season, over bait, while drunk.  He scores meth in Yak Vegas, laces it into his bait, and waits until they are strung out to kill them.  All of his pictures are photoshopped from scans out of Outside Magazine and back issues of western hunting magazines.  Plus, he is really a 5'2" albino, has never been outside in the sunlight, and grew up riding stallions in Enumclaw.

Maybe it's because he's a moderator and just deletes the criticisms before we see them, I spend a fair  :yike: amount of time on here and haven't seen much in the way of accusations of fraud and fabrication.  WTF?  Talk about a left-handed compliment ...

That's just sick guys. Bone- great buck and story. I appreciate all the time you put into the story. Now if I can find a buck like that I'd be shaking so bad I'll need to find a rest to hold the pin on him.

Bone,
Thanks for the inspiring story of your hunt!!
I have a any bull tag for the blues this fall and the country is intimidating. And I'm older than you.
I know that I may have to really work to get into where the big one like to be, and likely work even harder getting one out. I'll try and remember to keep telling my self "one step at a time".
Congrats on your deer!

Great story Doug.  Good stuff.  Threads like these are the reason I started and have stayed with this site.

I think Pope said a mouthful there...

OK.  Yeah, I think I missed this thread by several months.  Didn't even know Bone filled a tag this year.

I even did Michelles seamless cape.  I was cussing you by the time I was done Michelle, sorry if your ears were burning.

You mean a short "Y" ?

Yep, the short Y.  Not as easy to do at 7,000 feet perched on a VERY steep hillside and wrestling a deer that is continuously heading "back to camp" on his own, than say on the shop floor.  :)   Always trying to improve though.  Now lets see if I let that one freezer burn too.
