Title: Wild boar Gun on E-3 Budget
Post by: addicted on September 07, 2009, 12:35:11 PM: Over here it's hard to find a new big game rifle under 1000 euros so for this addition to my Safe I had to penny pinch my way to a product i'm very happy with. Had the rifle purchased at walmart through a family member then mailed to my local rod and gun club as well as the mounts and rings. The scope came from a buddy of mine who was no longer using it on his 9.3x62(35whelen on steroids). All together the total cost came in somewhere around $450. The scope alone is worth 500+ euros so I am very happy with the set up. This Rifle is going to be a work horse hunting year around so having a stock and a finish that i dont have to worry about scratching up is excellent.

Stevens Model 200 .308
Burris Zee steel 30mm high rings and low end steel mounts
Second hand RWS 3-12x56 30mmtube with illuminated dot #4 reticle.
Accu-riser permanant Cheek riser

The Set up is primarily for night hunting when the Pigs are most active. The 56mmbell and 30mm tube are supposed to bring in the optimal amount of light. The #4 reticle is supposed to be easy to pick up in the dark as well as the illuminated dot. I'm not a big guy so it's nice to have a rifle that fits me. With the 56mm scope i can almost set my chin on the stock to look through so the accu-riser was a nice addition as well as the slightly small stock that comes on the stevens.

Post by: addicted on September 07, 2009, 12:53:55 PM: oh yeah, and I intend to eventually swap out the barrel for .338 federal which i believe will be an awesome caliber for pigs. ;) I'll be one of, if not the first to be running a .338fed in germany. they usually stick to their favorites(7x64 7x57 8x57 and 30.06)

I'm working on that right now. Hopefully i can get a deployment done to get some real bullets too. I did put hunting down as a bullet on my first EPR. "successfully aided in the protection of crops in the local german econemy from wild animal damage"

I just got word of a Red stag/Roh Deer/ Wild boar hunt next week and i'm signing up. This baby is gonna be my shootin iron.

The only suggestion I would make, if you can do it, is get a better stock. You can find a B&C made for the center feed short actions fairly cheap. It will stiffen every thing up and get rid of the pretzel of a stock.

I do want to change out the stock. it may happen some day. The stock would have to fit me well as you can see there is zero room for adjustment on the tube of the scope.

I had the same issue, I purchased some Leupold mounts and they moved it back nearly an inch.
I just flipped them around so the long piece was in the front pointing back.

Post by: PWN Kurt on September 11, 2009, 10:52:46 PM: If you go back in some gun mags you'll find some of the old "338 fed vs. 358 win shoot out!" articles. Usually there's some small differences that only the author of the article would find valid. The same goes for the 338/06 vs. the 35 whelen.

Ruger has recently carried both the 338 fed and 358 winchester in their hawkeye rifles and in their 'frontier' models. Both shoot similar weight bullets, but the 338 has a slight edge with ballistic coefficents...the 358 makes slightly bigger holes, and might do a bit better with 250 grain bullets at closer range.

I shoot 225 grain nosler partitions.

Post by: addicted on October 19, 2009, 11:08:47 AM: So this gun has really been wipping my @$$. shooting 180grn sierra game kings this thing kicks like my old 300wm with a little more smack. Since i dont have to worry about weight hunting hunting the stands over here i thought i'd throw some lead shot into the tupperware stock to see how it felt. I ended up putting about 3 kilos in(6.5 pounds) and that sucker is heavy now. Can't wait hit the range and the stand this weekend. lol. I dont see it as a permanant adjustment, just fiddling.

the centerpoint for the weight is just behind the trigger guard now
