ANyone here if more wolves are being killed? I wonder if they will get close to the quota?
-
haven't heard yet. i'll be going over to 21A mid-october and will be calling to get a report later this week.
-
Still3 as far as I know.
-
wonder if volves get call shy real easy? and learn quick that people can kill them now?
-
I bet they won't hit the quota. I didn't think they would have this hard of a time. Not good! :'(
-
Id be willing to bet they dont hit half the quota, at least half wont be reported.
-
You guys gotta keep in mind that only two areas are currently open and both are pretty remote areas. Once the deer and elk seasons get in full swing quite a few more lupus will be hitting the dirt. They may not come close to the quota, but the numbers will go up, count on it. Plus a bunch of folks have been waiting to see what the judge ruled...me bring one of them.
-
I've talk to a few people who have tags and most of them are waiting until elk opens, the only elk/wolf areas open are archery only on elk right now. more areas open for both the 15Th of September.
-
I think that it is a lot herder to kill a wolve than it seems. I know the wolves are in the area I hunt elk every year. But I've only seen them once and it was from a long distance. I bet they don't hit the quota either.
-
The number is at 14 now! :IBCOOL:
-
I read a newspaper article that said the game dept didn't think that they would even come close to the quotas. But like someone already said, who knows how many will actually be reported? :dunno:

Where did you get that number? The Idaho webpage says 4.
http://www.fishandgame.idaho.gov/cms/hunt/wolf/quota.cfm (http://www.fishandgame.idaho.gov/cms/hunt/wolf/quota.cfm)
-
It was poached, counts towards the quota.
-
What are the requirments on reporting? We are thinking that some of the Idaho boys are holding out. Do they have days/hours to report the kill? Wolves are on the move, could make them a tough to find.

This is from their regs, they have 24 hours to report the harvest.
Mandatory Report and Check: Any hunter
killing a wolf must report the harvest within 24 hours
by calling the Wolf Reporting Number at 1-877-872-
3190. Consideration will be given to those hunting in
backcountry units. Additionally, any hunter killing a
wolf must, within 5 days of the date of kill, present
the skull and hide to a Fish and Game regional office
or conservation officer for removal and retention of
a premolar tooth and to have the hide tagged with an
official state export tag. No person who does not have
a fur buyer or taxidermist license or appropriate import
documentation may have in their possession, except
during the open season and for five days after the close
of the season, any raw wolf hide without an Idaho or
another state’s official export tag attached.

It was in an article, can't remember where.

I checked again, F&G still says 4 wolves.....
-
Just checked and they show one tagged in the Middle Fork region. :IBCOOL: :whoo: :mgun2:
Only 215 to go..
-
the one in Mc Call area i heard was of a guy who went and reported his wolf that he got but was on the wrong side of the road. F&G took rifle, wolf and tags. don't know how accurate that is though.

:chuckle:
-
Two more hit the dirt. Total of seven down so far.
-
Make that 8 now. :IBCOOL: I hit refresh and it went from seven to eight. Think I'll hit refresh a couple hundred times. :chuckle:
-
Yep, 8 in Idaho, and 3 so far in Montana. :chuckle:
-
Now there's 9 tagged in Idaho. 4 in MT.
-
up to 13 now in idaho :)
-
up to 6 in Montana :)
-
Nothing better than seeing the quota filled, but I want to be selfish and have the quota not filled where I hunt in November :chuckle: :chuckle:

Here is the deal with the Mc Call hunter. :mor:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From the Idahostatesman...
An Eagle man was cited Tuesday by Idaho Fish and Game wardens for shooting a wolf outside of an open hunting zone.
The hunter, who was not immediately identified, was issued citations for shooting a wolf in a closed season and shooting from a public road. Witnesses told officers he shot the wolf while standing in the road at the back of his pickup truck.
The wolf was shot about 6 p.m. Sunday in the McCall-Weiser wolf zone, which is closed to wolf hunting.
He called the 24-hour wolf harvest reporting line Tuesday morning and reported that the wolf had been killed in the Sawtooth wolf zone. Later that day he checked in the wolf at the Fish and Game office in the Nampa. He later told officers he thought he was in the Sawtooth wolf zone until he looked at a map back in camp Sunday evening.
An illegal take would be charged to the harvest limit of the zone in which it occurred. In this case, the wolf will be taken out of the McCall-Weiser wolf zone harvest limit.
The wolf is a small female, still a pup. Officers seized the wolf hide and skull, a rifle, camera and tag.
The investigation is ongoing and charges have not been filed with the court.
I'm ashamed to be a hunter today.. What was this guy thinking? While I think a controlled hunt is a good thing for all, this is bad for all.
-
Up to 15 now in Idaho! :)
-
I5 in Idaho and 6 in Montana for a total so far of 21 ;)
-

:yeah: Wolf season for the whole state opens tomorrow. The wolf tally might spin faster than the national debt meter.
-
Man, I hope they get the quota, can't wait to here of them hitting the dust!
-
can someone post a link as to where they are getting the numbers at?
Thanks
Joe

I called on a whitetail tag the other day and the guy on the phone told me that it was up to 28 reported and all areas in Idaho will be open in the next week, I believe is what he said.
If that's true there is a huge discrepancy between the website and the offices. Is that just a delay in the website updating? Later in the season as quotas (hopefully) get close to being reached, I wonder if some problems come up with over-harvest in some regions and how they handle it. How would you feel if you have a tag, checked the website, saw the quota for your area still had several left to go, shoot one, report it to IDFW, only to have them cite you for taking one in a closed area because there's a delay in the website updates. Would they then take it along with your tag, weapon, rig, etc like they did to the guy who read a map wrong? Not certain if this will happen but makes you wonder. :dunno:

As of 10/1/09 at 1:21pm,
Idaho reports 17, and Montana reports 9, for a total of 26. This is off of thier online wolf quota sites.
-
23 in Idaho so far!!! Wooohooo!
Michael
-
the number is at 37 now in idaho!
-
46 as of today!
-
amazing how that number progressed as they opened more areas and more importantly the modern firearm season rolled around.

Nearly a quarter of the way to quota :).
51 of 220 8).

Numbers will increase rapidly in Montana as well once general firearm season opens.

They shut down the unit closest to yellowstone a week or so back due to the fact the quota was nearly met and these wolves don't impact ranchers as much. Hopefully MT reallocates those tags to some where else in the state.

I fully agree with re-allocation of those tags, my problem is that they may not impact ranchers much in that area, but they sure as hell impact every other 4 hooved creature.

WOVES NECCESARY to food chain?? just curious
-
glad to see the numbers.... :)
-
WOVES NECCESARY to food chain?? just curious
neccesary? no i dont think so wolves were taken out of the ecosystem and it thrived, that being said with proper management i think that the ecosystem will be fine with wolves, but even 220 wolves in idaho is not proper management just a foot in the door to try and curb the growth

I think you could make the same case for grizzly bears as well.

Agreed, just look at the number of elk that used to be in and around the National Park. Hopefully they do the right thing and let a few more wolves be harvested some where.
-
69 wolves so far in ID! I don't believe the quota is going to be reached but I'm happy with the results so far!
Michael

Gamies came by the elk camp on 10/22/09 and said that there had been 72 taken so far that they knew of in Idaho. i was hunting 21A and there was alot of sign around the upper sheep creek area. in Gibbonsville about 30-45 north of Salmon there is a tavern reader board that says "Kill a Wolf, Free Pitcher of Beer and Pizza." Now that's motivation! :brew:

I was just over in Idaho last week and talked to a guide from unit 19 in the selway, he said hes heard of seven wolves being killed in the selway this year. I seen a huge gray one but could'nt shoot him because I didnt have a tag

I called the hotline today to check on tags, a lot have the critters have been removed from eating deer and elk, but all areas are still open.
-
Up to 87 now in ID... I'll guess that they will reach maybe 120 wolves for the state... maybe 150 if we're lucky... packs gotta be gettin educated by now!

If you are implying I paid for a hunt your wrong never paid for a hunt in my life and never will. I stay at a guides lodge though for the comforts of home, cheaper than a motel and great home cooked meals for a really affordable price.
Pretty sure thats NOT what he was referring to...
