Title: Fletching Marks
Post by: Hillbilly270 on September 09, 2009, 09:51:56 AM
Seeing if anyone can help a rookie bowhunter out. :dunno:  i had a trophy taker drop away rest put on my bow when i purchased it and my arrow fletchings were getting wear marks on them and the felt on the prongs were getting wear marks also.   Putting two and two together i assumed that the fletchings were hitting the prongs.  looking at the drop away at rest it was not laying flat on the bow and was sticking up a bit.  I took my bow into cabelas and they moved the rest up and also moved my nock point up as well.  I just purchased some new arrows and i can see that they are already getting marks on the fletchings.  Now frustrated and searching for any advice!!    >:(:bash:
thanks,

can you post up some pics? there are plenty of people here that can help. sometimes the shelf on some bows is shaped funny and has trouble clearing the wide trophy takers, which one do you have? also does the rest rise right at the very end of teh draw?

I have a ross cardiac and yes the rest pops up at the end of the draw.  these pictures were taken before cabelas raised the rest so it lays more flat.  not sure how big the pix are so i will try and post two seperately. HELP.......PLEASE......

one more question, can you pull the rest up with teh string and take a pic. to get an idea of how high the arrow is above the shelf?
i was having a similar issue with my trophy taker and fixed it by raising teh rest and nock point. you already did that you said, but maybe not enough.

How are your arrows flying?  First thing I would do is shoot through paper.

i just made a thing to hold paper and shoot through and haven't had a chance to do it yet.  When i shot through paper at cabelas it looked fine.  anyway....here are a few pix i took tonight with the prongs all the way up.

i would say that you should raise the rest and nock point up a bit. then you will have to raise your peep also. for hunting purposes i like my arrow to be in the top half of the berger hole or a but higher, maybe at the top of the hole, this is because of the big tall fletches for hunting. on the other hand i set the arrow right through the hole for my 3d  bow because the fletches are small and low profile. with the rest raised up iw will lower down more to horizontal also. this should get you the clearance that you need. you will need a new loop though.

If you are shooting bullet hole through paper and your arrows are flying well and grouping well I wouldn't worry about it.  Seems like if you are getting enough contact to put marks on your vanes though that you would have some problems with arrow flight.

You can put some baby powder or something on your rest and shoot.  That will tell you right where you are getting any contact.

what type of vane are you shooting? that rest is way to low, dont take it to cabelas. luckyshot in chehalis is a  good one to go to or xxx in ore. by longwiew. your rest should be flat on the shelf and not raised at all. a paper tune will tell you everything.

the fletch contact needs to be taken care of before any tuning takes place, whether it be paper, walkback, bareshaft, or broadhead. the fletching contact will effect the tune.

If your are getting contact it is more likely that your rest arm is not falling soon enough.  Easy fix.  Take some slack out of the rest cord.  Not much.  It sould be all the way up for the last 1.5 to 2 inches.

True True....what fletch is getting the contact?

Another problem with your rest is it bounces back up after falling out of the way. I have seen super slow motion video of the rest. And the rest will bounce allmost 3/4 of the way back up after it falls. So it needs come up in the last inch of your draw to work the best. Also, like bullblaster said, raise your rest and nock up a bit  more. But not sure why your peep would have to go up?Just your sight. Just keep tweaking until the contact is gone. Might even have to change rest if it won't stop hitting.

the peep needs to be raised the same amount as teh nock point to allow for the same anchor.

any luck fixing this hillbilly?

i went to lucky shot in chehalis and he got me shooting through paper right and adjusted my peep and nock points.  havent had a chance to see if its still hitting but its shooting good through paper and they told me that that would be good and not to mess with it.  opinions?
