Howdy
I am looking at getting a new Remington 700 SPS Varmint in .243 for (semi) long range coyotes. I would like to put a decent tactical type scope on top but have been archery hunting for so long that I have no idea what to look for anymore. What would you suggest that I check out for under $700 or so?
Thanks

Used Leupold mark IV. Should be able to pick up a dandy for $700.

Just got rid of a 4x-16X yesterday. I traded it back to the guy I got it from for a Butt load of .45 acp ammo

A few good resources:

www.24hourcampfire.com is a great resource for used stuff too.

Thanks folks, I'll check them out!

Check out Nightforce scopes. www.nightforcescopes.com
These are the ultimate scope for long range. If you want to reach out and touch a coyote at 700-1000rds plus I would go with this. They also have their benchrest designs available.
If your shooting 100-300yrd....then do a good comparison. Look through several scopes...even of the same make and model. I would recommend doing this when the sun is just rising or setting.

I am most interested in a scope for shots 300-600+ yards. I'm not sure that I trust a .243 much farther than 600 yards.

polarbear,
not sure if its tactical or not but for 699$...u get the magnification to kill yotes at 600m and BDC reticle for drop down references...

Sweet. My plans of buying a new rifle are now on hold for a bit. I have to shell out 6-8 grand in dental work for my youngest daughter. Thanks for all the help folks!

Another thought for you is to buy a vxIII and have Leupold build you a turret out to 600 yards. Should be under $700.

That is a great idea. I will check into that. I have a VXIII 4.5x14 that I had the factory put extra heavy duplexes in and got it back within a week for pretty reasonable. Thanks for the idea!

Oh man, you could have had a TMR reticle put in it for the same price, and had the scope you wanted! Even have custom knobs built for it. Luppy does some great things.
NXS-Hunter, i'd put my Schmidt up against your nightforce any day! :P
start at 1800 yards :hello:

Keep your feelers out, PolarBear. I just picked up a VXL 4.5-14x50 BC reticle in mint condition for $450 last night! Another buddy picked up the same scope in the 56mm long range in mint condition for $600 a week ago. The deals are out there!

I chose a Nikon Monarch X 4-16x50 MilDot scope (30mm tube) for my Long Range rifle. I could not be happier. Nice scope, check them out.
-
buddy got the same gun in .223 with tactical intentions. he put a 16x super sniper on it. it's awesome on the range......hunting is another story.
-
I tried a SS 20x and later a SS16x on my .223. Ok for targets when the light is good but junk in low light.
-
all others aside...... an S&B PM2
-
Leupold makes a tactical scope for about 650 make sure when your looking for a long range scope they have a mill dot reticle or have some kind of hash mark for windage shooting a 243 the wind well play hell with your lighter bullets when shooting long rang

U.S. Optics is a choice. A little more than $700, but hey, its only money. :chuckle:

I bought a leupold last year and had the gun store send it in for $80 and they set it up for my gun. It's good out to 600 yards. It goes dead on at 200 yards with 4 lines below.
