Title: Deer hunting on base
Post by: SpokaneSlayer on September 11, 2009, 10:58:36 AM
Well, I passed my proficiency test to qualify to hunt here on Fairchild AFB.  Had to put 3 arrows in a paper plate at 30 yards.  Pretty difficult, I know.  :chuckle:  There is a lot more area open than I though.  Pretty much the entire south side of the base is open from the 16th until the 25th.  There weren't very many people that showed up, about 15.  That's good since if there was a lot of people we would get assigned zones and what days we could be out there to minimize crowding.  With so few people, we get to hunt wherever we want within the open area, whenver we want.  Can't wait to get a crack at some of the bruisers I know are out there.

I wish they would open up hunting at Bangor again. There is a MONSTER 6x6 blacktail in there.

hopefully they attached the cheap brand paper plates to the deer.  Wouldn't want to see people wasting money and shooting the chinette brand. :P
good luck to you.

Wow thats cool.  Last winter there was a nice 5x5 hanging out right outside my window in the dorms parking lot.  Talk about tempting.

They only do it once.  It's open to anybody who can get on base, AD, guard, reserve, retired, or contractor.  We're still waiting for the base commander to approve it.  Hope he does it soon.  It opens Wednesday!

I just got an e-mail from the base, looked like they were trying to encourage more participation ???

I got that to, right after I replied.  They said at the shoot last week that it was the only shoot.  :dunno:

Weird.  Sorry I missed you at the fair.  Donkey didn't want to load and so I ended up being behind schedule and then it was a nightmare trying to get the trailer onto the fairgrounds!

Can one of you guys send a copy of that email to me?  My contractors badge is good through next summer.

Good luck with the hunting. I bet the wing commander is getting with c/e emtomology to find out about the impact hutning will have on the base. The wing king here did the same thing and they also said it was a safety issue with the deer inside the flightline area.

TL - PM sent

Robb - You're probably right.  I think it's approved now since the permits are available for us.

So they're not going to have another proficiency shoot?  Crap.  Is there a late season there at all?

Heck, I just want to hunt those trees in front of the Bx where they sit in the shade and let us drool at them.

No there isn't.  The GMU we're in, GMU 130, doesn't have a late season at all.

Thanks Slayer.  If I don't get a permit, and you want a photographer to tag along, would they let me come on a hunt with you as long as I didn't carry a weapon?  that would be pretty cool to get you in a photo drawing on a nice muley with a tanker in the background.  Or even the president's plane if it is still out there.

I'll ask the gal when I give her a call.

Do they know how many deer they want removed from the base to drop the herd size but still maintain a healthy herd?

TL - That would be pretty cool.  You'd win the POM contest for sure.  I'll probably be hunting out there everyday after work next week, all day the last 2 days of the season since I took leave.  That's all assuming I don't get a deer before then.  I don't think they would have a problem with that.

Robb - I have no idea.  There were 15 guys at the shoot and we can all take one.

You should check to see who is setting the limits for on base, and how many deer total they want removed they might tell you that you can take more than one. C/E emtomology and wing safety should be the ones running the program. I would make some calls to find out.

Apparently, per our base commander, it's now a lottery to be able to participate.  :bash:  They are drawing names at 1600 today.  Good thing I have other places I can go.

When we had the deer team here on base, there were 10 of us that were the only ones who could hunt on base. Then they decided to have Andrews part of the AFDW and they split the base in two, the 89th and then 316th, pretty much the deer team instead of falling under wing safety it would fall under entomology, and they were going to pay a private contractor over 20 grand to do what we were doing for free. After that we said f it and left the program. I do know in 6 months we took over 50 deer out of the flightline area and around the base, plus around 100 duck and geese off the base lake.

Man the hits just keep coming!  They aren't notifying the guys who were drawn until tomorrow!  WDFW must be running it now.  :chuckle:  There goes the opening morning hunt.  I feel bad for the guys who went off the previous info and took leave tomorrow.

Not surprised , typical crap

It is my understanding they are not looking to thin the herd to a healthy number, they would be more then happy to eliminate them, at least that used to be the reasoning several years ago.  I was asked back in 2000 to start the original work for the harvest of the deer and then luckily for me they decided to have CE take over setting up the OIs and coordinating with the WDFW folks.  I was about to retire the following spring so I was happy to have that additional duty taken off my plate.  :)

Well, I got selected.  One out of five.  But, we are being assigned a date and section we can hunt.  I hope it's either next Thursday or Friday since those are the days I'm taking leave for the last 2 days of the season.  Maybe I'll stick a deer before then.

So I get a phone call stating that my assigned day is tomorrow.  Yes, tomorrow!  And that I could not reschedule.  So I declined it since I am in training all day tomorrow plus it was to late to take leave even if I wasn't busy.  So I would only be able to hunt from about 5 til 7:30 pm.  Did I mention there is a $10 permit fee?  Needless to say, I declined.  I'll stick to state land that I can hunt for free any day I choose.

Tons of HUGE BT on Bangor.  I worked out there for about 3 years a few years back and the bucks that would come out in Nov. were awesome!!! Huge 5x5's running around bunches of does and running off 3x3's..  Awesome sight.
