45/70 marlin guide gun
41. mag and 44 mag marlin 1894

I LOVE lever guns, but I only have a Henry Golden Boy in .22lr.

I hope to get a Marlin 1895GS in 45/70 and a Pre 64 Winchester 94, and a Puma 454 Casul.

I have a pre 64 model 99 in 308 with iron sights that my Gramps gave me years ago. That gun has some shooting time on it and is still my favorite brush gun.

I had a pre 64 30-30 winchester that I had to sell while unemployed. :bash: :bash: Only took it to Michigan hunting once and then just to the range for fun.

30-30, 32 Special and 25-35.  All old and dang good winchesters.  Two of those guns have been in the family for a long time and have killed a pile of game.

Marlin 336 in .30-30 wood/blued.  Very basic.

I'd love to get one of the laminated stock, brushed stainless .45-70s eventually.

Not to go too far off on tangent, but anyone find any aftermarket iron sights for Marlins that they like?

30/30 and 45/70
Shot a lot of deer with that old 30/30 marlin when I was a kid (a lot of grouse and coyotes as well)  My uncle gave it to me when I was 10 and I can't wait to give it to my daughter.

For iron sights on a lever gun, I think I would go with the "XS sights."

I am not a big lever fan. But I have 3 22's. A Henry, Winchester 250, and a Mossberg Palomino. Hands down the Mossberg is the best shooter. I find them great to take camping. I used to have a pre 64 30-30 that was a decent shooter but it would not cycle for anything when clean.

Marlin 336RC in .30-30 and a Marlin 22 Golden 39A.  .30-30 has been my deer gun for years, and the 22 is what my daughter learned to shoot on.

I thought long and hard about getting one of the 308MXLR (laminate and stainless) for elk, then I thought one of the 1895MXLR (450 Marlin laminate and stainless).  Didn't seem to have the range.

Love 'em.

I love lever guns, but I never seem to hang on to them. I've had a Winchester 94 30-30, Marlin Guide guns in 444, 45-70, and 450 Marlin, and a Savage 99 in 250 Savage. I think that my hang up with them is the accuracy. The lever guns are the only rifles that I've had that I couldn't get to shoot 1" or less at 100 yds, and that's my minimum accuracy requirement for rifles. I know it's stupid, because that's not what lever guns are for. But a 20" barreled bolt gun is just as handy and IMHO, eaisier to get to shoot well, and versitle. :peep:

That said, Marlin didn't make the stainless Guide Gun in 45-70 when I had mine. That would make an excellent companion rifle to my 45-70 BFR.  :chuckle:

444 is one of my favorites.  Dawei, have we met on the marlin forum?

As for iron sites, I've tried some of the williams peep sights on a couple guns.  Accuracy is great, and quick target acquisition.  However, they are not good in low-light conditions and not easy (for me) to adjust.

I've owned a few Win94's.

Currenly own Dad's pre64 Win94 in 32win special that has taken countless Deer and even Elk over the years. I also own a Marlin 336 in 30-30 with micro-groove barrel. The Marlin was affectionately named Mr. Lucky by a long time hunting partner and has 8 notches in the leather sling for the Blacktail that it has taken. (7 by me since it was new in 1988)

I really want a Marlin 444XLR.

you can get the marlin 1895 in .444 marlin, .450 marlin, and .45-70 gov't.  browning BLR can be had in .450 marlin.  unless you're looking for a .44 mag or something custom(like a .457 mag or 450 alaskan) that's about as big as they get.

As far as the biggest calibers for a lever gun, there's custom jobs like the 475 turnbull and wildcats from Wild West Guns and Gary Reeder.  Standard calibers: 450 Marlin, 45/70 gov, and 444 marlin.
Work up some hand-loads to 'Marlin-only' pressures in a guide gun and you'll have plenty of kick at both ends.

I saw a couple of gems at the last gun show that I'm kicking myself for passing up.  They were some limited-run and odd-caliber lever guns that looked pretty handy.

Well, I usually have to go to Marlinowners.com to speak this language.  Skinner sights are pretty good although my latest project hasn't been blooded yet.  Yeah, Marlinitis has set in bad once I went over Medicare age.  I guess the older I get the more I revert to the older leverguns & traditional loads.  Currently, I'm sporting a bruise on my shoulder from spending time at that great Plantation Range in B'ham.  My latest project is a "pawnshop rescue" a 336 Marlin in 35 Rem.  I have taken bear (my favorite game followed by Blacktail & wild boar) w/my 45-70 & 450.  This year is THE year for my 35 Marlin.  Hunting in Western WA means that most of my shots are at about 50 yds & the 35 Rem w/a 20" bbl should do the trick.  Love hunt'in in the woods! But I support all types of hunters (we either stand together of fall arguing w/each other).

Bought a .308 Marlin Express when they first came out. Liked it so much I picked up a 39A. Had the .308 out at the range yesterday. Always a solid performer with no bad habits and the accuracy is pretty darn surprising. It will be going to the elk woods this weekend.

Got a Win. mod 94 in .30/30 too but it never gets to go anywhere.

I would probably grab for my wallet if I came across a clean 99F Savage but I'm not sure it would replace the Marlin in the woods. In my ignorance I had looked down on Marlins for many years without ever having owned one. Now my bolt rifles all stay home.

I have found a couple of model 94's locally. One is before they put the ugly safety on and the other is a newer crappy looking one. The one that is pretty has blonde furniture and the ejection port still flings brass over the shoulder. It has the side mounted scope but it's a garbage scope. For you guys that own 99's and 88's, I'm extremely jealous that I have to settle for a tube mag but such is life. I think I got the go ahead from the wife so here's my next question.

Does anyone know any smiths near lakewood area that is capable of making one of these things shine?

Ok I just picked up the gun. The trigger isn't bad at all but I do have some questions.

What do you guys use to clean the guts? I'm thinking hoppe's no. 9 and q-tips.

There is a swivel mount mounted on the magazine tube but it is just basically c shaped and can slide along the entire tube up to
the hardware that connects the tube and barrel. What's up with this?

It also has a beat up armsport 4x32 waterproof scope. I plan on removing this and the side mounted scope mount. Do I need to put the scope mount hardware back into the side of the receiver?

What do you guys use for tlc on the furniture?

I don't see using my otis cleaning kit to clean the bore and barrel so what do you guys use?

If anyone wants the scope mount from this gun pm me. It mounted on the side of the receiver and I will provide the 3 screws for it. They are specific to this mount I'm guessing by the way they sit flush down in the mount. Comes with the scope for free if anyone wants it.

Interesting how many Marlin 444s there are out there. I was thinking I was an oddball..
Here's my inventory of lever guns:
1) Marlin 336 in 30-30
2) Marlin 1895 Guide gun in 45-70
3) Marlin 1894 in 44 mag
4) Marlin 1894P (16" ported barrel) in 44 mag
5) Marlin 444P (ported barrel)
6) Henry Golden Boy 22LR (just acquired and have yet to shoot)

Someone was asking about iron sights. I have tried a lot of different combinations and have settled on the best configuration that works for my aging eyes. I use a red fiber optic front sight with a Skinner aperture sight on the rear sight. Works great in all situations except for low light. I plan to outfit all my lever guns with this arrangement except the 30-30 which has a scope and the Henry. I've tried the XS ghost ring sights but just don't find them as accurate as the Skinner sights. But hey, that's just me.

Lever guns are like Potato chips, you can't just have one.  :)

I still need a Win. Trapper in 45L/C to complete my set.

I've got a couple, a 30-30, 22 and a 45/70.

The 45/70 is a guide gun in perfect conditon with ported barrel. BUT its blued, don't really want to take it out in the AK elements. If anyone has a stainless one and would ever want to trade plus some $$$ with it let me know.

thanks

Chris

Don't own any. I suppose if I acquire one that it will be chambered in .38 special since thats what the lady shoots for ccw.

Don't stomp my nads for asking this but, anybody know where to get a barrel for a 94? It's a 1975 and I kind of want a different rifling than the original.

Numrich Arms. Used to order parts from them but that's been years ago. I would imagine they're still in business. Good luck

Almost picked up a poor old abused 99 in the store. Had the octagon barrel and brass counter. Wife woulda been pissed about a 600 dollar safe queen though. I'll post picks of this 94 when I get it looking as presentable as I can. Receiver needs some steel wool and the furniture needs... probably new furniture.

Good point John... hehe

My 2nd gun was a Mod 94 30-30 in 79'. (first was a little H&R 410 in 78'). I have killed a humongous pile of bears, a couple deer and a few lions with it... I have shot it more than any other gun I have (well, except maybe a couple 22's).. Love this little gun, but haven't used it in many years.... need to break her out and put some rounds through her!

I learned a few years ago that the key to keeping the stocks on your like new firearms is to not put them in the truck the night before hunting season and have your hunting buddy get run off the road doing 60 mph , roll, and then go end over end, ejecting your friend and your rifles letting them and your rifles go end over end down rail road tracks. This is how I lost a brand new Remington 700P 308 Badger Rings and Rails and Brand new SWFA Super Sniper scope, and a like new Ruger M77 30-06 with a brand new Leupold VXII on it (Dad and I both killed our first deer with that rifle about 20 years apart) Damn near lost my best friend and hunting partner too. He is ok now head trauma, broken back and colar bone and sturnam later.

So I bought a peep sight online and there was some cheap serbian 30-30 ammo so I bundled it in on the package. Today I also bought a box of hornady and federal. All the rounds are 150 grain rounds. They are all FP bullets. The serbian ammo is the least quality looking as I expected, it's just to get rounds on paper with the new sight. The federal ammo looks slightly better. The hornady looks like somebody was extremely precise. There isn't excess lead on the side of the top of the bullet. The brass look far superior with a better color and shininess to it. My question is, (you knew it was coming, deal with it,) how much does the appearance in fit and finish influence these rounds? I always thought a better looking bullet would fly better and better looking brass is higher quality. Is this in fact the case?

savage 99 in 300 savage. great gun havent hunted with it yet but i am using it this deer season

Got the same gun. Killed my first buck with it 10 years ago.
I killed my first deer with this same gun. Borrowed at the time. Wished I owned it now!!!!

I now have a Marlin Golden 39A (.22) with a sweet peep after market from Skinner.  Shoots lights out, and is a fun, good in the hand rifle.
