Title: Bones Public land bulls
Post by: boneaddict on September 14, 2009, 07:59:48 PM
Here is a start.  Not going to be as big a bunch as I wanted with everything going on with my truck etc.  But this category is for all the elk pics I take in the near future of hunted bulls.   They won't be as showy as the park bulls or game reserve bulls.  They don't tend to stick around with the click of your shutter.  Most of the time I have hunters right with me.....

Here is the exerpt from the toad thread.  I obviously missed him and probably won't have a shot.  He'd have rivalled those Yellowstone bulls and Banff bulls.  He was about 380 or over.   I'l try again, but since two other hunters saw him, I bet they push him to another planet.

Quote
I was camera hunting Public land bulls.  I had two other bowhunters close in, one about 100 yards each side of me.  Guess they figured they might have a chance. LOL  If the stupid f's would keep their hoochie Mammas in their pockets, they just might have.   He was pissed at the Sat bull and me.  I pulled the sat bull out of the trees right between the two hunters.  I was on him and noticed the big guy coming out.  I didn't wnat to move becasue I figured once the sat bull blew, the big guy was gone.  My aperature was set on the worng Fstop from the eveing before and I was too excited to click with the brain register until it was too late.  Well, the big bull disappeared with his cows, and the Sat bull negotiated his way perfectly so the hoochie mammas couldn't have a crack at him. LOL
I screwed up but managed to come away with these......

So wait, are you actually hunting them or just in there messing with them while people are trying to actually hunt them?

Actually I was looking for goats.  I'm just out there "messing" with them.  I would call it camera hunting or catch and release.  I only have a spike tag this year.  Unfortunately I should be in Idaho right now.

One gentleman asked me if I was packing meat, I said no, just camera equipment.  Its about as heavy but doesn't taste very good.

Big zero today for elk pics.   POPPED ANOTHER TIRE :bash:   Got up at O hundred early and headed for the Selkirks.....
Got there about 5.  Stepped out of the truck to dig out the lens and blew the bugle. The whole entire range lit up.  I have never heard so many elk in my life. PURE INSANITY.  WOlves aren't hurting them yet up there.   I had never heard so many elk at once.  It was totally overwhelming.  I didn't even know where to go.  I decided to park where I had in the past and there was a hunting camp there.  They weren't out of bed yet.  I moved down the road and started up the hill to a place I wanted to start.  I stepped out of the truck and a bull ripped a bugle about 50 yards in the trees.  I big herd bull.  The herd came out and checked out my truck popping(as it cools).  Too dark to focus.  Huge bull with several satellites.  They moved on. Not really spooked.  I tried up the hill where there were wallows before but I didn't want to scratch up the rental so had to turn around.  I then went back down and tried to call a couple but they were moving off.  I gave chase and eventually ended up within 50 yards of three bulls.  A huge herd bull and two others.  I could not get them to come in.   They moved off at my cow calling but I brought them back in with a bugle.  Then a hunter started closing.  It was enough to quiet them.  By now it was 10 in the morning.  No more bugles so I went driving.  Looked for deer but didn't find any.    Then I popped another tire and had to come home.  I was hoping for some bulls in obscure places but I can't get to most of those places in the rental.  This sucks.  Had alot of chances but its flat too dry, so can't close the distance and its too thick for a pic.

Good thing I came out of the woods to fix the flat.  Woke up to another one this morning.  That would have been a LONG walk.

So far they bought me a new tire as the first flat was a 2 inch hole.  THe last one, Les schwab picked up the tab evnthough it wasn't a Scwhabbie tire.  They know me a s a customer though and know my plight.  By the way, I missed the perfect picture yesterday.  I came around a corner in real rangeland and there were 5 black angus in the road. They were smarter than the last one and moved.  Probably because they saw me digging for the camera.  It hought it would make a nice caption.
Hopefully they will do the same with this tire.

The thought has crossed my mind.   I looked 4 ply.  I have toilet paper that is 6 ply. LOL   I didn't even know they made 4 ply truck tires.  I'm not impressed with the Chevy Silverado either.  Have to admit that Hemi kicks its butt.  Not trying to start any truck debate, but I can sure tell a difference.   After seeing the tires are 4 ply, they probably have a 4 hp lawnmower engine under the hood too.

Yep, exactly what they are.  Soft as butter and 4 ply.

Those are bar none the worst tires you can buy... well...maybe not bar none...but they suck. Dad bought a set years ago..probably 88' or so, got 3 or 4 flats in one weekend up in the  mountains and took them back and got Toyos... never ran another tire since...neither have I!

We just put Toyos on a gov rig that came with Wranglers... 3 flats in the first week out here in the mountains...

Wish you could have got some more pics man...

I learned my lesson years ago. Anytime I go on a trip these days I take one of my dive tanks, regulator and an attachment to inflate my tires. Unless there is a huge hole, this works great and has saved my bacon on numerous occasions. With a 3200 psi fill, it will take care of many many flats and get you back to town for the fix.
