Title: Broadhead Flight Problems
Post by: eastside boy on September 14, 2009, 08:33:35 PM: Hello......I was wanting to get some input on arrow flight problems I am having with my broad heads. Here is my current setup:

Bow- 08 Martin Firecat 70lb draw, 80% let off
Sight - spott hogg 7DP
Rest - Bowdoodle Game dropper (I also have a ripcord fallaway I can throw on, but I like the simplicity of minimal moving parts of the bowdoodle)
Arrows - carbon express 60/75 rebel hunter weight forward 28.5''
Fletch-4'' vane techs. straight
Broadheads - Rocket Ultimate Steel, 100gr.
Release - Scott Shark

Here is the issue I am having.

The bow appears to be in tune and I am grouping great with my field tips out to 60 yds. As soon as I shoot an arrow with one of the rockets I am grouping to the left about 6" at 20yds!! My sight is maxed out for windage so I cannot compensate there, and I if move the rest to the right even just 1/8 inch the arrows start doing funky crap like fishtailing and are grouping worse. I think my form is consistent? but who knows. Last Year I was shooting some old 28'' (almost to short for my setup) graphite arrows made by Gold tip in 75/95 specs and was shooting great.... I would have stuck with these arrows but I was getting low on them and it appears that they are no longer made? The carbon express arrows I currently have are supposed to be rated for my setup....but could this difference in arrow stiffness be the issue?

Anyway if some of you veteran compound guys have any serious suggestions...I sure would appreciate it.

i dont know how much it really matters but are your broadheads aligned with your fletchings?

Post by: boneaddict on September 15, 2009, 06:05:14 AM: Seems to me your arrows are a little light for a 70 pound set up. Shane is also right, you should be able to start at center.

Post by: grousetracker on September 15, 2009, 06:48:33 AM: if your sight is maxxed out then you have rest problem or all of your shots are left, just not as far as your broadheads. papertune it and it will be hard right. good luck with it.

Post by: usmc74 on September 15, 2009, 12:05:23 PM: I started shooting with a release this year. Sighted in the bow, everything was good. But, when I shot broadheads, they went everywhere. :bash:

I stripped it all down, and shot paper. Tears were way high and right. Adjusted knock point, and rest multiple times. Tear is now round hole with 3 vanes.

Re-sighted in. Broadheads and fields group the same now. :)

I use the 7595 carbons also. 125 gr Snuffer 3 blades. Martin Cougar mag70 lbs 80%, Whisker buiscut

Post by: tazz on September 15, 2009, 08:05:45 PM: one other thing after you do all that and your tears are good and your broadheads are still off look at different heads i shoot slick trick and whack em's they shoot great i tried muzzys and tthey were way off.just somethign else to mess with your head :chuckle: good luck

You are going to have to put some spin on those puppies to get fixed bradheads flying straight.

They are fixed I'm guessing because you are going to use them in Washington?

Post by: alwinearcher on September 15, 2009, 11:39:14 PM: First off get your arrows fletched with some helical, that will help broadhead flight alot..
Next off, to me it sounds like your rest is left of center shot and needs to be moved toward the riser a little.
The carbon express arrows you are shooting now are rated at the same spine as your old Goldtips, so i doubt spine is a issue.
Like a bunch of other guys have said, if youget it paper tuned that would be a good start also.

The quickspins should be put on with a right wing offset

I have never heard or seen anything like that.. Almost all broadhead shank diameters are going to be 5/16" and won't make any diffrent on flight as long as the broadheads are tuned to spin straight.

As far as fletch size recomendations. I prefer a 2" high profile vane like a blazer, vanetec HP, or AAE max hunter.

What arrows and what broadheads? are you sure that is what caused it?

Ends up last year when the shop had put a new rest on for me that they didn't paper tune it, but they told me they had, and I took their word for it. We checked some stuff out and shot paper - and sure enough, my rest needed moved. Did that and then aligned the blades with the vanes and problem solved, consistant hits out to 60 with broadheads/ field points.

Post by: BULLBLASTER on September 22, 2009, 04:11:54 PM: i dont shoot my bows throught paper :dunno: i shoot a field point and then a broadhead and move the rest or nock point to move the broadhead to the field point. if the bhead hits right move the rest left a bit until they impact the same. then move the sight to where the arrows are going.

Are you sure they didnt paper tune it? over a years time a bow can get WAY out of tune..

Thats assuming that you have your arrows spined perfectly. If you cant get your arrow to Bare shaft tune, you prob wont get your broadeads and field points to group.
