Well now that im finally back from my 2 week early archery hunt i decided i would share my first kill with everyone on here. Its a 5x5 from the willapa hills unit 506. I took it with my bow @ 10ft at full run. thats right feet! not yards. I thought the shot was back further at first but i knew my arrow connected after we checked where it ran we immediately found blood 5 ft away from where it was shot and knew it was good. Turns out i had a perfect double lung and almost a pass through if the arrow hadnt broke in 3. it cut all the way through to the other rib cage but didnt go through the cape. It ran 70yds mostly because it was already at full run and luckily it went down less than 60yds from a road parallel to it in some reprod. so we drove the truck down hill of it on the road and cut a path through the reprod and blueberry bushes with some big pruners and my machete and quartered it out. Its the closest ive ever been to an elk let alone the rest of the herd. Ill post story when i have more time. But i know how things go and everyone prefers a visual instead of literature so here it is....
My first ever kill in 3 years of hunting, my 2nd year with archery. Never killed anything ever while hunting let alone attempted even launching a arrow at a live animal till this guy. enjoy....

Shadowless, great job. Congratulations.
A question for you.... Did you see any 'limpers' down there? Any elk showing hoof-rot?
-
Excellent work. Way to keep it together............. with an elk @ 10 feet. That must of been exciting to say the least.
-
-
Nice bull! I no you said 10ft,but on a full run did you have to lead the shot at all?
-
Such nice color on those antlers. Congrats man!
-
thanks for the congrats everyone!!!
ICEMAN- I didnt notice any elks limping out there atleast where i was. i had a coworker ask the same thing, i didnt know that was a problem out there.
funkster- I honestly thought i had the shot alot further back after i saw it hit and was beginning to get real nervous right after (ive heard lots of horror stories and the past 2yrs my brother inlaw has wounded and nerver found 2 bulls in the same area) till we found blood right away. honestly i didnt even have the time to put my sight on him properly or try and lead the shot, its the closest ive ever been to an elk let alone a whole herd running for their lives right in front of me. I nearly s*** myself when they stampeded towards me, with one cow jumping about 4ft in front of me and making me step back, but i somehow managed a perfect shot, id say adrenaline played a huge part in this success lol.
-
Nice coast bull!!!

Wow!!! What a monarch man!! I hunted the willapa this year as well. Were they bugling for you much? I didnt hear much. Great bull man, love the chocolate antlers and a sweet cape. Awesome, I can only hope to kill a bull like that some day.
-
Congratulations!!
-
Great bull. Only three years of hunting...almost too easy :IBCOOL:. Good luck in the future as I would guess you are now hooked. Be sure the thank the Wife and father-in-law for bringing you into hunting. It is not done near enough anymore :dunno:. We all complain about the lack of land and animals but really need more hunters too. Great work.
-
Very cool! I've had them close, but not 10 feet, on the run! Wow!
-
Congratulations great story and beautiful bull :tup:Sure feels good to get that first one under your belt.
-
thanks again everyone! yeah im definitely hooked lol and i thanked my father inlaw by giving one whole side of the back straps. i think he was even happier than me to see a bull go down in that area simply because he's been hunting there for almost a decade and has yet to take a bull there or anywhere. there's never been a bull taken in our elk camp until this one and it was sure nice to see everyones spirits up. And with me being the rookie everyone wanted to push harder and try to get another one.
after being beat by the mountain and terrain the year before ( my first year at this elk camp) i decided this year would be different. i spent time at the gym, got a nice mt. bike and started riding often. also did alot of camping/ scouting in the area in the summer just to get familiar with everything and most important, get comfortable with the area. All i can say is it sure felt great to have everything pay off in the end. now i just have an itch to take a deer.....
-
congratulations, welcome to the brotherhood
