Title: How long will the bugle last?

I've been in good elk areas the first week of OCT and heard NOTHING...and I've been in them the same time and had 5-7 bulls screaming their brains out!!! I've had lots of good hunts where the bulls were singing in Mid October and in 07 a heard bull bugled from first light on thru Noon on Oct 25Th!!! Never did see the *censored* either!

Specifically in the NE corner.

Your loudest period is OVER. Now they are still going but not finatical. They are cowed up and have had pressure and are very call shy. Now I would bugle to locate then be quiet.

The bulls will bugle year round..... herd bulls will bugle but tuff to get them away from cows right now.... try location bugle and estrus cow for sattelite bulls ;) we were talking to them this last weekend just fine.

Post by: ELKBURGER on September 22, 2009, 12:17:57 PM: I bugled in a 6x6 last thurs night to 25 yrds but he would'nt turn broadside. He only bugled twice but it were a nasty, raspy bugle! I was hunting mt. st. helens. I'm hoping to bugle a bull for my buddy who will be muzzy hunting in west klick. I hope they are still talking!

Post by: bowkid on September 22, 2009, 09:21:27 PM: Just depends on where you are, I was on the east side of St. Helens opening bow week and didn't hear a thing other than other hunters I found that were calling. The next week I was up north off I-5 and cows and bulls were talking away...........beats me. Oh but what a nice sound it is when you get them going.

Post by: PA BEN on September 25, 2009, 06:06:04 AM: Back in the day when Bow season opened Oct. 1st the bulls were still bulging hard. I've hunted muzzleloader in Oct. too. Use a bugle to locate them, then get in close and use a hyper cow call and cow calls. The cows are coming in heat again if they didn't take during the pick of the rut, the bulls are looking for those cows. Remember keep checking the wind as you move in.

I think you could put a menstrating cow in front of a Bull in May and stir him into a frenzy. People talk about the moon and the weather but I believe it is the cows that determine the rut. Find the cows in heat and you may find a bull that is off his rocker

Post by: miah on October 02, 2009, 02:23:41 PM: was up in the ne corner yesterday and called in a 5 point to about 5 yards just for fun, that was awsome we had three different bulls bugling within about 200 yards and the cows were talking too. wish I had a muzzy tag instead of archery right about now
