Title: Recurve and Longbow Shooters
Post by: WArookie on December 20, 2007, 08:46:37 PM: I shoot a recurve and live in Wenatchee. Just trying to see if there are other traditional guys in this area. I've been a traditional shooter for 14 years, but I just moved here from Texas 4 months ago.

This season I had a ton of fun stalking mulies but did not connect.

I have a new Schafer Silvertip recurve coming within the next few weeks.

I have shot a longbow for several years, although haven't gotten a deer with it yet... Hope to hit it hard next fall and change that! Plan on joining a 3-D archery club in the next couple of months and get back into "hunting form". That mule deer stalking sounds awesome, I don't think I have ever seen one in the wild, other than the ones that tried to commit suicide in front of my truck on the drive out here from Michigan.

Glad to hear from other traditional shooters out there.

Post by: Lowedog on December 21, 2007, 12:19:29 PM: Lot's of guys and gals shoot traditional in the Wenatchee area. I live in Cashmere and love to shoot both traditional and compound.

There's a traditional 3D shoot every spring over by Moses Lake that is a blast. I don't know of an actual local club but there are a lot of people that are into it in the valley.

I know of a couple guys who make bows in the area. A couple friends and myself made ourselves each a takedown recurve this fall. They turned out really well.

I think they think I'm nuts. Best part is dragging a deer out with my blacktail in hand....gotta love it.

Wenatchee a great place to base out of. Wish I was on that side from september thru november....

just picked up the black widow from bearhunter...and i must say it is beautiful and in very good shape. and shoots like a dream

and at 65lbs at 30 1/2" its plenty good enough for the elk im going to shoot next year :archer:

Post by: cohoho on February 11, 2008, 05:00:34 PM: I'm in for certain, got my new bow and shot it for the first time today in the back yard... wow! I am hooked! I actually did good considering the last time I shoot anything without a release and sights was twenty some years ago... The thing is pretty darn fast, seems to me anyhow... Switched back and forth just to see and it seemed almost as fast to my UNCALIBRATED eyes... Man, know I know why some of you guys have switched altogether, smooth, no weight at all, easy to get on target and a plain old kick in the shorts to shoot. I got a huge amount of practicing to do before this season for sure. Probably drop off 15-20 yards off my zone I used to have with compund, makes it funnier to get closer anyhow.. What do you guys consider accuracy out to for traditional? Compund I feel very comfortable at 40-45, nothing more, except once, and I paid for miles for that stupid shot, tracking a wounded caribou.. I'm thinking 25 max???? Thoughts??? Just curious... I know everyone is different but just seeing what to work up to..

You think you get funny looks when you run into guys with trad gear, you should do it in the general season Modern) It helps when yu have a big set of antlers on your back.

It definately is lighter cohoho.

I would guess 30 to be about what I am comfortable with. I can shoot further blah blah blah, but thats about my self imposed limit. My deer was a little further than that this fall and there was no way to get closer. It worked out ok.

Post by: rooselk on February 14, 2008, 10:28:56 PM: If you're new to Washington and shoot traditional, you really should make an attempt to check out a couple of Traditional Bowhunters of Washington events. There's a shoot in Moses Lake April 18 - 20. In August (1 - 3) there's the TBW rendezvous near Packwood. In between several of the archery clubs around the state have traditional shoots. These events are lots of fun and are always well attended. Go to the TBW website and you'll find the shoots listed.
