Title: any information
Post by: NWTFhunter on December 22, 2007, 04:27:34 PM
Hi guys, wondering if any of you knew of any other public land besides sunnyside for waterfoul?  Sunnyside just wasnt that good today. Lots of high flyers, maybe the weather would have helped? Thanks, Cameron

Where do you live? I'm not sure where you're referring to when you say sunnyside.

I would guess he's talking about the Sunnyside Wildlife Area over there, owned by the WDFW.

Toppenish off of 97.  It gets crowded, but there are alot of birds.  Get there early...I mena real early.  It might take you a scouting rip to figure out which blinds you like.

Toppenish has been good in years past but they did a few things different this year and it's really hurt the number of birds they've been holding.  They hardly mowed any of their ponds before they flooded them and now the ducks really don't want to use them.  Even the refuge on the west side of 97 is overgrown so much that the birds are rarely sitting in there like they used too.

If you do want to check it out, go down on a Saturday after the Holidays around 9 or 10 am and sit in the parking lot and watch or walk out to bridge and use your bino's to see who's doing what.  Talk to some of the guys as they walk out and see what they shot and where.

As for other possibilities, check out the Satus unit off of Totus Rd. Lots of access and good numbers of birds from time to time.

How are the ponds at Toppenish, have they pretty much frozen up ?

I will have to look at a map to see where Totus Rd. is, but Im assuming its on the rez across from Sunny Side?

Toppenish is for the most part, locked up with ice right now.  There isn't enough open water to attract the birds that direction.

Totus rd is on the Reservation.  Take Hwy 22(mabton to Toppenish) and turn north on Satus Longhouse rd.  go about 1.5 to 2 miles and Totus will be a right turn, head back a ways til you drive through a gate and you're there.

Good luck!

Thanks GD. Do you get out there much? I would like to get some geese before the season ends. I got back up here late in the season, so there isnt much time left. I usually do a ton of waterfowling but the move messed that up.  Any ways this is much better than the hunting in Ca. I really missed the PNW.

well it was before they started to remove the russian olives.  Still a good bet down there, but not what it was 10 years ago.. :bash:
not many geese at Totus. I think sunnyside would be your best bet for geese in the valley.

It seems the past few outings in Sunnyside the geese have been very hard to work. Most of that is due to lack of good weather, if you know what I mean?

We are going to be heading down there in the morning on the hopes that the weather man is right !!  Supposed to snow and such.  Keep your fingers crossed.
