Title: Stolen IR Homebrew - REWARD!
Post by: bow4elk on September 25, 2009, 01:35:53 PM
Never thought it'd be me, but I was ripped off during early bow season.  Somebody found my homebrew IR cam, then came back with a hacksaw and cut my Master Python cable lock.  I go to great lengths to hide my cams.  This tough guy had the balls to come back.  I have less sympathy for calculated criminals.

I'm offering a $100 cash reward for information leading to the return of my camera in good working order.  Below are the photos of the camera.  It is easy to identify as it is one of a kind.  It was stolen near Capitol Forest, but not in Capitol Forest.  It's actually private land, and I have permission.  The jerk rode a quad in there and it was clear they searched for other cams after I followed the trails they made through the high grass.  I knew long before I ever got to the tree that it would be gone.

I'd like to think it was NOT someone who is a member here or frequents this site.  However, I do have a special comment for the thief should they read this post:

I'm watching you and I know more than you know.  You may have stolen my IR camera but I'm watching you from afar.  I have photos of you from another cam you missed.  Darn.  I've informed the adjacent landowners in the area about you.  They will call the sheriff if they see you.  You must think you get to live by your own rules.  Your only way out of this mess is simple - return the camera and memory to the exact location by Monday morning, 9/28.  Leave it near the base of the alder tree.  If it's not there by Monday morning, I will begin making your life miserable!!  Again, I know what you look like!!   I'm giving you the opportunity to do the right thing - make a good choice.

Man that sucks.  I just bought 2 Bushnell Trophy cams and 1 Reconyx RC60HO and am now afraid to put them out in the woods.  I've been working on putting real bark camo on the bear boxes for the Bushnell's and thought they looked pretty good but after seeing your camo job I guess it does not matter how well you try to hide them, the scum still find em.  >:(

Hope it works out for you.

That sucks! All of my cams are pretty deep and none have ever been touched (no one has even walked by any of them), but on public land you never know. It is kind of amazing how many get stolen.

Hope you get it back or catch the scum.

On a side note about weirdos and such. With the world the way it is today. Please refrain from posting information about where your home is or where you hide extra keys when out fishing or hunting. All a thief has to do is read these site and gather information. I don't know if any are that ambitious but it would behove us to be vigilant about our posts, pictures of "toys" in storage area, etc. Lots of low life scum bags out there that don't do enough time in the clink!

That's why I didn't participate in the thread where all the guys who have wildlife plates were giving out their license plate number. Too easy to look up an address....

That thread about the plate numbers was about my camera being taken and a friend getting a wildlife plate as someone who was in that area at the time.it was during the late permit hunt last year in the 448 unit near Skykomish.

I got my first cuddeback, it was out not three weeks and someone ripped it off  :bash: -  not deep enough, not camoed  and not secured like yours.

i will build a bear box w/ lag scrwes only accessible from the inside and a paddle lock on the outside....  maybe that will work???

totally sucks, I had a IR cam and treestand taken last year >:(
the thing I always wondered was, if you have a stand on public land and a game cam and someone takes it, what can the police do? I see it as nothing, where does your cam or treestand say its yours?

UPDATE:

Well I've given this thief ample time to make good on stealing my camera.  No dice.  I have no choice but to begin making things more difficult for him.  I prefer to keep this a private matter from here on out.  And for the record, I'm pursing legal means, not violence.  That's not my style.

Thanks for your attention and comments.  Should anyone find my camera on Craigslist, a pawn shop, etc.  Please PM me and let me know.  The reward remains in tact.  I'm more interested in finding this guy than I am getting my camera back.  That alone is worth the $100 reward.  I can always build another camera.

Sucks about your camera and I hope you find him or get it back.

One thing though, how do you know it was him on cam that took your other cam? Could be someone else... do you have proof or just guilty because he was in the same area?

Well if it is private land, id say the chances are pretty good that it was the same guy.

There were no quad tracks in there when I set up the camera.  I go back and find a set of quad tracks leading right to it.  The first and only time a quad has been in there and my cam is gone.  Circumstantial for sure but what are the odds?  Guilty beyond reasonable doubt.  The same quad came back and never returned.  Found the cam on the first time in, left and came back with a hacksaw (my guess based on the cuts in the bark), then never returned.  The odds of it not being the same person are slim to none.

This.

How many of us carry hack saws into the woods?  Bone saws maybe but they wont cut a steel cable.  This one was found and then returned to.  How hard is it to be a decent person any more, seriously?  Find something that isnt yours that doesnt look like its "lost", leave it the *censored* alone.

Please put this guys picture up.

Sorry, but I'm not posting pics.  I'm handling this through other means.  I appreciate the comments and support but given the situation and location, I'd rather not post the pics.  I have what I need.  I posted this thread only in hopes that the thief might see it, second guess his stupidity, and put it back.  I gave him ample opportunity as I checked three days in a row following my deadline.

I have the upper hand.  At the end of the day, it's easy to make another camera.  That's not the point.  The point is simply that he will need to watch his back from here on out.  If I find him in the woods or anywhere around Olympia for that matter, we will have some things to discuss and sort out.

I'll leave it at that.

By the way, yes, the offer still stands for the reward.  It takes unique IR photos that can have a pink hue to them and show some color during daylight (see elk pic).  Here are a few examples.  The date is displayed with just the day (number) of the month with the time to the right of it.  So if you see pics like these posted and you suspect they may be from my camera, I'd love to know about it.

Thanks!

Dbake, instead of laughing at the loss of someones stuff, you could have asked "hey Bow4elk, any luck yet on this, how about an update?" See how nice that sounds?
