This was a mount that was on the garage of an old family friend. Its a blacktail from the oregon coast somewhere around the turn of the century. I personally think it would make a run at the world record. He wouldn't take it down for me to stretch the tape. I can't remember if I took Hornseeker there in person or not.

You have no idea how much I cringe to see world record class antlers haning out in the yard.

Those horns are as black as any I've ever seen! thats awesome
-
Nice rack it deserves a better mount than that. Love the dark color.
-
That is awesome! I was after one similar with my bow in the 80's but he was only around 18" wide, and of course he always gave my the slip! But that one is as cool as I have ever seen!
-
Other than not matching up perfectly on both sides, he has EVERYTHING, and even though he doesn't match up, he is so frickin big, it may not matter. I know that I wouldn't even mind shooting a muley that big.
-
That thing is kinda freaky looking, i bet it would give some kids nightmares! :chuckle:
-
Bone is it possible that the horns were stained? Looks like some stain got on his nose. I have known guys to stain or varathane their horns. Reguardless that a great rack
-
that is an amazing buck. i have seen many very large blacktail but none close to that.
-
I would guess they could have been stained. They are hanging outside. Its been several years since I have seen them.
-
THat white stuff on the nose is sunshine.
-
Just wondering as the tape on the left antler shows some coloring.
-
Odocoileus humongous! :chuckle:
-
WOW!!! Bone if you ever get to Redmond Oregon go to the Archery shop there!!! The guy that ownes it has a 181? Blacktail he took in Oregon the last year he Rifled Hunted before he switched to Archery!!! He has about 9 Blacktail Mounts in the shop!!! Good Luck
-
I'll do that. Thanks for the heads up. Do those eyeguards fire you guys up as much as they do for me. Man, a muley with those would be awesome. This thing just kicks butt. I got to see the ATL pic of him and wish I had access to it. UNBLELIEVBLE. He comes as close to D-mans heavyweights as I have seen.
-
Now thats a blacktail I would offer to do a free remount on and restoration just so I could say I mounted a high 170s net blacktail! What a shame. WHAT A DANDY!!! I love big blacktails. I have a 150 that was shot on the oregon coast that looks huge ( 24 inches wide) but thats a pig!Thatnks for posting those pictures Bone!
-
Here's a 170'' Gross blacktail I was telling you about Charlie, killed in Thurston County.
-
BTW, thanks Doug, that's a ripper, makes one wonder how many world class critters there are, that people don't care about scoring. Thanks again. Later
-
Same guy, 2 years prior, 158'' Gross, killed between your place in mine, where you hunted bear. Later
-
I know about that buck I beleive. My buddy brett told me about it also. I dont want to say the location on here but I beleive he had some trail cam pics of it eating apples and there is a river close by? Thats a hog of a buck. Ill have my budy Brett look at the picture and tell me if it was the one. Killed about 4 years back?
-
My previouse post was of the first buck. That second one is a masher buck too!!
-
Yep, same buck. He has 5 other all time blacktails, they had too all weigh over 300lbs.grin.....
-
That thurston county buck is something else, any more angles on that guy, looks like a really cool rack.
-
Those are some world class blacktail holy sh#$. You say that guy has 5 others? Is he hunting his own property or a friends, maybe with some kind of food plot on it? Thanks for the pics, I'm seeing more and more huge blacktail on this site all the time, keep them coming.
-
When I get more time maybe Bucklucky, Black Ghost and I will get a Blacktail thread going. No food plots, the property he killed most on was limited access. Its all grown up now, though the genetics are still there, the country isn't very condusive to hunting, not even blacktails.
-
Oregon has some fantastic blacktail, I like to look at Boyd Iverson's collection. Any idea what County, or general area it was taken Bone? I know Lincoln County hold's a lot of record book harvested animals.
-
I know where it was killed D-man, I'll take a gander at a map, I'm not familiar enough with Oregon. Those are some more dandy blacktails. they look like they came form where I got my monster sheds. Same light coloring. Take a look at those Michelle.
-
Here you go ridge runner. The 170 was 22'' wide, pretty unusual for a Wa blacktail. The other pic is the 158 buck again, I think the eyeguards are 6'', lots of little hangers down there too. Enjoy
-
Didn't get em all.
-
Looks like I need practice
-
Amazing how light in color those antlers are, I've killed bucks in Thurston, Lewis and Pierce County near that area and they all had really chocolate colored antlers. I'm guessing he's taken these in the same general area, out of the same gene pool. Thanks for posting, something to keep drooling after.
-
i'll have to get some pics of my uncles sheds that hes got. they're the biggest blacktails horns i think i have ever seen. i cant say if they're bigger then the ones you guys have posted becuase it would get alota points docked off for having so much trash on it. im guna see him tomarrow and ill ask if i can take some pics of the mount he did on it. i also may get some pics of the #3 in washington whitetail that he has at his house. gotta make sure its ok if i show them though
-
Notice the "Dry Bottoms" box............Its good he was packin them........I would have *censored* myself too when I walked up on that! :chuckle:
-
Looks like he was going to do a lifesize on the 170 buck. I dont think that antler colors have anything to do with location to much. I have killed real chocolate brown antlered bucks and the real blond horns on the same road where I hunt. I also have more of a gray horned buck from the same spot.
-
Yes, Alden did a full body mount for him, its in RM, sneak model. Agreed Bucklucky, doesn't have anything to do with location on Blacktails. I'll post my last 3 bucks, all killed within 200-300 yards of each other in the same clearcut.
-
Here's the one you're doing a Euro mount on.
-
Here's 2006's buck, killed within 100 yards of this years.Decent 2X4, can't pass em up.
-
Here's my avatar buck, killed in 05', same clearcut as the prior 2 about 300 yards away. B&C 116 5/8, oldest, biggest buck I've killed. Don't know how much he weighed, and don't care, never weighed a buck before. He got brought out in little pieces on my Alaskan guide pack frame. Enjoy
-
Antler color for location only has to do with what they are rubbing. If there is alot of cedar or hemlock they are redder, the lighter antlers denote alot of Doug fir in the area that they are ripping. Spruce equals black. Difffernt pine means a different color. Bucks tend to concentrate on their "favorites", but it has to be there.
-
Agreed, guess I misunderstood your post a while back. Over here they get after alder, maple, and jack firs' pretty good. I love it when you can smell the pitch on em'.
-
Bone was right on with one of the factor's of antler coloration, the other factor is one that is genetically passed down and that is hemoglobin in the bloodstream. Here's a good read on it.

-
I think we were all right Dman, like I've just shown you, the horns around here are either dark or light. You can't estimate where a buck was killed based on horn color.
-
Thats for sure.
-
what about age, diet, and health?
-
Here's 2 of my oldest Blacktails, both were in good health, both totally differnt color. This my highest scoring buck, weighed at least 3 fiddy.grin....
-
Here's the other with the pard holding him.
-
Here's another honker killed the first day of late buck this year in Lewis County. I don't know this gent first hand, so with all the controversy about permission to post, I'll cover his face. A buddy of mine from Morton knows this guys pard.
-
NICE! Now thats mass. If he would have had the tine length he'd be a "contender".
-
that right there is a *censored* rack. i bet he knarled up som little bucks.
-
What do you think that scores Bone?
-
Here's another killed this year in Dmans favorite spot. This one grosses 145''. Good buck eh?
-
about 158
-
Great minds think alike, I guessed 160. I'll see if I can find out.
-
Here's that 145...
-
im pretty sure i know where that buck was taken. cant say the name but im just bout positive i know where it was taken. my uncle who lived up in morton there for awhile told me bout the spot
-
ssssshhhhh!
-
what about age, diet, and health?
Diet can be a factor in hemoglobin production, also you'll see more Canadian deer and high country deer in colder climates with darker horns (on averages, with exceptions). Colder climates cause in increase in hemoglobin production. Health and age I'm not sure about, but it would stand to reason an unhealthy buck might have trouble producing as much hemoglobin as a healthy buck.
-
Gee, and you also see more spruce in colder climates and alpine areas.
-
LOL...
-
Gee, and you also see more spruce in colder climates and alpine areas.
funny how that works...
-
just found this thread Bone...Yep..I'll never forget that buck I've got that pic in an album here somewhere. He wont break the world record, but he is a true hawg... Probably got a little more muley in him than some of those nice lowland bucks 257 was posting...

-
Blacktail on roids. I know you shared the same sentiment I had about him hanging on the side of a garage.
-
im pretty sure i know where that buck was taken. cant say the name but im just bout positive i know where it was taken. my uncle who lived up in morton there for awhile told me bout the spot
You better not say where.
-
Hmmmm............... 257s 145 buck sure looks like a friends buck. I could be wrong but the house, garage, truck and buck all look real familiar. So in order to dispell rumors, his taxidermist green scored it at 147. Friend is a Morton boy, but the buck is from King county. I don't think I will be giving away his secret spot by sharing that it was killed with a Green River A tag.
-
Anyways, there are a bunch of beautiful blacktails on this post!
-
Easy now sasquach, I never laid claim to that buck. Look at my prior posts, my biggest is 120''.Yes there are some nice blacktails, and thanks for, should be 100 more people or so puttin in next year.
-
Looks like my 120 is on BTC, here it is. Recognize that shop?
-
I don't knwo ude, that laundry bucket and propane tank look awefully familiar. :chuckle:
-
257 didn't mean it the way it sounded, I guess. No you never said it was yours, I realized that. I meant more that I will not say with 100% certainty that I am right, but more like 99%certainty I know this buck and its story. Just was a little funny to see the post with the speculation/secret spot talk where it was killed.
Anyone can put in for the tag. Supposed to be a lot of great bucks in that unit. My firends partner supposedly killed a real nice three point. I never saw any pictures of it. Another friend worked in there for a while a couple years back and saw a lot of big bucks too.
-
That post when I said "Dmans secret spot" thats what I meant. He's been trying to draw that tag for a while, so have I and my wife, and my pards. I guess his buddy killed a 21'' 3 point.
-
True that. My pops used to work back in there for Burlington Northern, lot's of nice critters, I was in there once myself for my job and also saw a good deal of sign and likely areas. I did see in tribal harvest reports the tribe's do hunt that area pretty hard also -big surprise. Lot's of bears in there also, but I have no idea if they allow any hunting for them.
