Title: British Columbia elk
Post by: mtndew on September 28, 2009, 01:08:17 PM
Just got back from our guided elk hunt in the Purcell Mountains of British Columbia. What a blast! Thought I would post a couple pic's before I crawl into the sack. We had a 23 mile horse ride out of the wilderness yesterday, then drove all night to get home this morning. Spent today running around to the butcher and the taxidermist. I am beat!!! More to come later.

I have two friends up there right now, probably with the same outfitter.  Were you with Grizzly Basin and Sawtooth Outfitters?  Just curious.  My two friends left on Friday.

Congrats on a fine hunt. You can use rifles during the rut up there? What are the costs involved on a hunt like this?

Yes you can hunt with rifles during the rut. The cost runs about the same for all the outfitters in the area, most will list the prices on their websites. Go to www.goabc.org/ and look in the outfitter and hunt directory, in the Kootenay region.

No, we were with A bar Z outfitters, they are farther north in the Purcell range than Sawtooth. Your friends should have a great hunt!

So on day three of our hunt, my guide and I walked about an hour in the dark to get to a series of avalanche chutes. We got there just as it got light, and heard a bull sound off to our left across the creek. About 45 seconds later a different bull started screaming to our right in a chute above us. We set up right between them and the guide started working them. About ten minutes later I had two legal bulls to look at, one at 260 yards across the creek and the other at 200 yards straight above me. Both were bugling, and the bull above me was raking a tree. I took a couple minutes to decide which bull to take (never had that problem before in my life!), then I shot the bull above me with my 300 WSM. Two days later after helping retrieve elkoholic123's bull, we were riding past my kill site and jumped a huge grizzly! Beautiful, rugged country. GREAT time!! :brew:!

Wow!  Fantastic elk, awesome scenery, and a 23 mile horseback ride to boot.  I bet it can not get any better than that, other than maybe a not quite so sore behind.

Congrats, that is a hunt I have dreamed of doing for a long time.

What an awesome bull, what other wildlife did you guys see on your trip?  My friend got a nice bull while up there and the other friend passed on several bulls and came home empty handed.

Saw a couple deer, a ton of mountain goats, and a grizzly. My buddy Jerry also had a run in with a real nice Shiras bull moose!
