Title: Scent Eliminating Products
Post by: Young Buck on September 30, 2009, 04:24:06 PM
Does anyone recommend a scent eliminating product? I used Dead Down Wind last year and I am not sure if it helped......both my brother and my dad smoke so its almost impossible to keep them from stinking up the place, especially when they light up right before we head in on a trail :bdid: :bash:. Any suggestions on products?

This is strictly my opinion but i dont think it matters what you squirt on yourself, it isnt gonna make a difference.  Stay downwind of your game and they will never smell ya. :twocents:

I believe they all work.  I use the soaps detergents and the spray before hunting.  Don't use the cover scents, only the scent eliminators.  I've been upwind of whitetail and walked up to within 20 yards of them.  Use a grunt call to get them to hold and if they don't smell you you'll be able to stalk them better.

I have had mule deer walk within feet of me while I was smoking until they got two feet past me then they stomped and started, lol.
There have been many studies and a few lawsuits that basically say scent eliminators only work until you sweat. None of the Carbon Activated clothing has been prooven to work at all.
In fact they are being sued for false advertisement.
That does not mean that scent disguise can't work. Might be hard to smell you if you are covered in Doe urine, lol.
Just not my cup of tee, lol

There is a product that not only completely eliminates your scent but covers the smoke odor as well, even while smoking.  It does work as described as I have used it for years even when I used to smoke.  I have shared with a few others over the years, but they never really believed in it or gave it a good try or thought I was on something, so I stopped sharing.  It will remain that way.  I get a chuckle out of all the folks I see at Cabelas, Sportsman's, Sportco, and other places  buying all that special clothing, scent eliminators or cover sprays.     :chuckle:

I guess you could always copy house dogs by rolling around in a pile of deer scatt or a scrape.  :chuckle:

Never used them, have smoked almost the entire tiem hunting and never had a problem. I have been smoking and been the caller for moose and elk set ups and had them come straight into me.  Once you sweat it don't matter what you are wearing. Just stay down wind

I would like to know the product. If it works help us out.

I use the "Dead Down Wind" spray and field wipes.  I like these products and have had good success with them.  I had a doe and fawn at 3yrds after I had been around a campfire all morning.  Theres no way I could've done that without the wipes for my skin and spraying down my clothes.

I believe in being downwind, but I trust the spray.

I like to use pine scent, you can get it just about anywhere. I've tried all the clothes wash and everything else and over the years have found plain old pine scent to be the best, but I take it with me and hit the boots, and rest of my clothes while in the field as well. I'd still try and talk them into nico-patches while your hunting, that would drive me totally nuts :chuckle:.

I had a doe literally stick her head right into my tent in broad daylight while I was unrolling my sleeping bag. There were many people standing within 30 ft with a big camp fire going laughing at the doe in my tent.  When I turned around she snorted and walked off with out a care in the world. This was in the meadow camp above Pearygin. No Scent Eliminating Products used in this example, lol.

My point? Sometimes deer are just stupid, other times they ping you from 1/2 a mile away.

Google up the "science" on scent eliminating products, you will find that the "science" part is seriously lacking. Like I said, the first time you breath, sneeze, cough, yawn, fart, or God forbid sweat any "scent eliminating" properties if there were any are gone.

I'll use the scent eliminator spray once in a while, and the non-scented detergent to wash my hunting clothes.  After using Febreeze on my clothes and car, I am a believer there is something to the sprays.

whether It works or not, I think I feel less conspicuous when I use it.  Maybe thats all it takes. If it gets you in the right head space to kill something its worth the $10

I use scent killer scent eliminating spray before each hunt and I couldnt tell you if it works a bit. Its just part of my pre hunt routine and if theres a small chance it may help sway the odds in my favor it works for me. I've also killed a couple bucks while using a primos can call and still not sure if they work either lol. Could be plain old blind luck not sure.
