So I have done all the reading I can find on calling bears in and I plan on trying it this weekend. I know that there is a bear in the area that I will be hunting since he has destroyed a couple apple trees and has been seen many times on the property. At this point it is very slim picking with the apples but we have fresh sign from the last couple days that he is still around.
I am wondering if anyone has experience on what the best sound to use while calling is or what you have had the best luck with? I know that you are suppose to continue to call and not take any breaks because there is a chance that they will not be interested anymore if stop calling. So is there one sound that is better than another (Rabbit Scream, Rabbit distress)or just trial and error? I know right now they are trying to pack on the pounds and are mainly concentrating on food especially since it is getting cold. So I would think this would be a good time to call since his regular food source is gone.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Start off the first few minutes calling not too loud. You don't want scare him right off the bat. Build up to it, and then really start pouring on the emotion and anguish. Your imitating something that is caught or is being killed and is screaming for it's life. When we talk about non-stop it doesn't mean you can't have short breaks, time to breath and listen. I usually pause 5 to 10 seconds and scream for 15 to 20 seconds. It's even better if you have a partner, then you can call for 30 seconds and then when you pause he starts in. Much easier on the lungs. Rick was nice enough to post som youtube videos of his caling style. I will try real hard in the next day or so and post one of my calling style, they are pretty close. Let us know how you do. Oh rabbit call will work fine, I'll try and show you how I make the higher pitch calls sounds a little better, at least to my ears.

There is some good info here. www.callingbears.com
I prefer fawn or rabbit distress. Machias hit all the main points.
Good luck and make sure to post your results.

I used fawn in distress this year for mine. I blew pretty aggressively for about 30-40 minutes although I didn't time myself. He kind of slinked in slowly. I saw him on the far hillside at 3-400 yards and was able to close to 180 and pop him. He was definitely liking the call but seemed to lose interest easily. While I was trying to get closer he'd turn and walk away until I blew again. So he didn't exactly behave like a coyote. I've only called one so don't really have much experience to share but fawn worked for me.
