You need to apply for it.
-
I did get a permit for this year just never been their just hoping to get some info.
-
Maybe you should go to the unit and look around...
-
Carbonkid, I am not real familiar with that unit, but I have spent some time up there fishing. I do however have a friend who drew an archery tag there a couple of years back. I'll talk to him and send you a PM. Perhaps I could meet up with you, and give you a hand, I'll be off from work for the first three days of the season. No promises though, I'll need to be getting ready for elk season.
-
Between now and the season, you should be doing as much homework as you can on your own. Talk to biologist for that unit, or perhaps the Warden for that area. Also, there is always a lot of information to be found on-line (this site), you just have to look for it. I don't know where you live, but if you can make a trip down there and have a look around, you can get an idea of where you might want to be come opening morning.
-
If you do a search for "desert a" you will find loads of info.
-
ok i'll say it. seriously can't believe you drew a desert tag and have never even been there, yet you're asking for help on the internet.
-
good luck man, I'm thinkin that you need to put in some time. Make sure you got some good hiking boots and keep your bullets in your pack until you see a wallhanger. That being said I dont think you will get much info on here only having 3 posts. Good luck and show us some pics of your hunt.
-
You REALLY need to put in some time on this. You have a potentially great tag and are in danger of wasting it. You can probably show up and shoot a buck, but unless you're super lucky, you're not going to get a pig. I saw one that was something close to 30" last year in back of someone's pickup that came out of there (don't think it quite made it, but it was in the upper 20's.)
Go talk to the guys at Mar Don, also. There are a couple of locals around there that might give you some pointers and the guys at the resorts may be willing to give up the name (not sure and I don't know the guys myself.)
You need to get in that unit, do some walking around and take a GPS. It's actually a little bit easy to get screwed up in there (hard to get lost for any length of time because if you walk in one direction you'll hit a road) but it can be hard to navigate back to the same spot because of the rolling dunes and kind of uniform looking terrain, especially in the dark.
-
Man the responses people are giving to this guy are embarrasing. What a load of crap.
Hi ckid. I hunted it in 2005 and killed a decent archery buck. I also turned a couple other archers onto the hot spot and they both killed bucks bigger than me. One was a 28 inch 3x3. If you'd like to know where to get a good buck send me a personal message and I will fill you in.
Congratulation's on the tag and these dingalings on here are just seething with jealousy. I hope you kill a 220" inch monster!
-
I thank you guys for all the info I will take all this info and I would like to apologize for not being on here for some time, but a Friend told me about Hunting WA site and asking for some info. and as far as putting in for the area I did not want this one and must have screwed up I allway put in for okanogan units and hunt in the timbered areas with no Private property. and this hunt is right during my Elk hunt and that I love more. :bash:

Man that is one hell of a good screw up. I will guarantee if you do your homework then you wont regret doing this hunt rather then your elk hunt. Good luck, I hope you get a monster.
-
Carbonkid, if you do a little research on this, you WON'T regret this hunt. There are some pigs in there and it's a different, and sort of unique, area to hunt deer. You can do really well in there if you give it the proper attention - this tag is hard to draw because there are limited number of people and some good hunting.
My point is not to berate you for not doing your homework (that's not my job and you probably shouldn't give a crap if someone busts your chops on a site), but just to emphasize that you have the chance to shoot a really nice buck if you put the effort in.
-
Well you drew a good tag anyway. The amount of posts you have should not dictate whether or not you get helpfull advice. This site id filled with skilled hunters and most will be quick to help you out. The only thing people don't like is to see a person who is obviously not willing to do any of their own work. As long as you show these guys that you are willing to put in the time you should find all the help you need right here. Every person on this site had only 4 posts at one time. You have to start somewhere.
-
Why exactly is it that we "call out" folks with few postings and not help them because they need to do "their own homework"? Isn't checking with other folks who may have information to share a logical first step in doing one's homework? Sure, he needs to go scout the place in person but what's wrong with asking for some general information to help him get started? :dunno:
-
amen brother you get guys with 3000 posts on here refering to you as a newbie and you must not know what the hell your doing cuz youve only posted a handful of times. you can get great specific info off this website but some guys are way too pricky.
-
I did not want this one and must have screwed up, and this hunt is right during my Elk hunt and that I love more.
Unbelievable :chuckle: Isn't this just what happens every year? :chuckle:
At least its not a sheep tag, I think I would have :'(
-
...and as far as putting in for the area I did not want this one and must have screwed up... :bash:
Dag gummit, kid - I wish I had your 'bad luck' :chuckle:
Now that the cat's out of the bag we all expect a story when you connect. X2 on the search function... that's prob your best bet.

first of all maybe i should apologize for what i said and maybe i shouldn't. i usually take the safe route so i'm sorry.
2nd-i am not calling anyone out that only has 3 posts. i am a little thrown off though, a guy draws one of the top 3 most coveted tags un this state and the hunt is just around the corner and he hasn't been in the unit yet. that is wierd to me.
people do need to do their own homework. that is a fact in my eyes...whether they have 3 posts or 3k posts. part of doing hunting homework in the age of the internet is coming to sites like this and looking for guidance and input, but hells bells man, if you haven't even set foot in the unit you drew a tag for at this point, that seems off to me. a lot of people put a lot of time and hard work learning what they know about areas of this state and most of them i'm willing to bet are not willing to hand hard earned info out to some guy that is not willing to put the time in to learn for themselves. sorry carbonkid, really i am, to use you as an example but thats why i said what i said.
72blzr...take what i said for what it is and don't overthink things, i'm not trying to be "pricky" just telling it like i see it.

Well said, my friend! I concure 100%

I dont there is any reason why you need to defend what you said jack. That is how you and many, many other members feel. Nothin against carbonkid at all because I am sure he is a great American, but I think he can even see that it would be hard for people to open up to a guy that is not known very well. how do we know that he is a poacher or an extremely unethical hunter trying to get into somebodies honeyhole. :dunno: But I will say this that he needs to get into the unit find access and hike until his feet cant carry him any longer. I hope this sinks into your head that you have drawn probably one of the hardest tags to get this side of the rocky mountains, not just in the state. Good luck and keep us posted.
-
My reason for posting what I did is a honey hole on a unit that you may only get to hunt once in your life is something that does not need to be protected.
If you may never get to hunt it again then why not openly share it with the next group of tag holders and wish them much success. :dunno:
If you are hunting open public land or private property and have a honey hole then of course you are going to guard it extremely carefully because once the cat is out of the bag the whole world seems to find out about it. No more honey hole. With the limited number of tags the game dept has alotted for this unit it will never get hunted out and there will always be exceptional bucks in there every year. So why hide it. :dunno:
It just so happens that I found out about the honey hole in this unit by simply enquiring of former tag holders and frankly they told me right where to go and opening day I went right there and was into all kinds of bucks. I usually trust people when they tell me things and I hope people trust me when I offer up information willingly without thought of a return favor. Ontop of that most poachers do not hike a mile and a half from the trailhead. I heard from a tagholder last year that shot a buck that one of the rifle tag holders was driving around road hunting and he was actually complaining about how he was not seeing any deer. :chuckle: A road hunter with one of the best tags in the state. :dunno: I would not feel sorry for him if he did not get one.
-
You have the sweetest of tags. Don't waste it. The area isn't that big but you need to know what your doing and where your going. There is nothing better that you could do right now than to put some "boots on the ground".
Join a team on the Coyote madness challenge, take your rifle and head to the desert.
I would give up any old ratty spike Elk hunt for a chance at one of those bruisers out there.
Good luck to ya. If the luck you had to draw the tag stays with ya, you will probably shoot one in the parking lot when you get there. :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
Can't wait to hear the story.

Why don't you tell us all about your honey hole before you go...
:hello:
-
This thread is already jacked so I will tell you that a little bit of tact on your part would help you out. You have called out a lot of guys in the last few days so yes you are a turd in my book. I think you should stick around and get to know some of the people first before you judge.

Jackelope, you "Old Salt" you :P
Is it wrong to post that anyone holding a tag for a unit that they are wondering if there is any information on should try accessing the little box next to the icon that has the letters s e a r c h on it? :twocents:
-
this site sucks im outta here for good
Thought I would help you out and get the door :hello: don't let it hit you in the ass on your way out, goodbye.
-
Now that that's over... :chuckle: Get out there and put what time in you have learning the country Carbonkid. There's still plenty of time.
-
Carbonkid, where is home for you? I ask because I'm wondering if distance is keeping you from traveling to this unit to do some scouting and familiarization. If you can't make it over in the next couple of weeks to scout, I would recommend that you get there a couple of days early to scout immediately before the season.
-
its hard to tell when guys are being sarcastic when you are just reading what they typed. as rodney king once said" OUCH!!!!" good luck on the hunt. keep us posted
-
Carbonkid..call the area wildlife bio in Ephrata Brock Hoenes...He does the deer surveys for the Desert Unit he can help get you started in the right direction...(509) 754-4624..Good Luck.
-
Go scout! There's a lot of good deer out in that unit. We duck hunt that area and always see lots of good deer sign.
Check for trails leading from bedding areas to water and fields. With it so dry out there and the ash in the ground it can be hard to tell how recently trails are being used. We've kicked lots of deer out of the cattails out there before. And those russian olives are home to some nice deer.
