Title: Chelan County Cougar - Hound Permit!
Post by: flyguide on October 12, 2009, 10:01:05 AM
Probably the best tag that I have ever drawn.  I have walked down a handful of cougars on snowshoes - got a hound permit finally - I LOVE cat hunting and this will be the first time that I get to run them with dogs.

Only problem, is that I don't have hounds.  I live in Ellensburg so I live close to Chelan County, but I need to hook up with a dog owner that wants to run a cat.  Anyone interested?

This is f'n ridiculous.  Just checked online.  It says I drew a permit that I did not even put in for.  I didn't even put in for a single boot hunt - only hound permits.  I called WDFW - says that the online is right.

I didn't even put in for that hunt.  These idiots can't get it right, WDFW denies that they screwed up.  He says I drew hunt # 9008 -  I DIDN'T EVEN PUT IN FOR THAT.

In the mail - it says Chelan County - hounds, which was my #1 choice.

What are we going to do?

Yep, they messed up on mine too! I got drawn for hounds a few years back and if my memory serves me right there was no paperwork that you had to sign and send back. Bottom line is they know they F$&^ed up and legally i dont think there is damm thing they can do if you use that permit. They are just threatening us and trying to scare us out of using that permit. I wont use it but if I chose to and they tried to charge me I think any jury would find you not guilty of whatever they tried to charge you with as long as you have a valid permit issued from the WDFW that stated Hounds May Be Used.

Actually you had to sign a form and send it back in and then you got the educational packet, your log book, the hound handler's cards and your vehicle placard.  But I have to agree with you.  If you showed the judge your permit issued by the state saying you could use hounds, I don't think they have a legal leg to stand on.  How do they know you got the call or the follow up permit??  You didn't sign for it.

its just a bunch of gov crap again, they probably recorded the call if i had known i would not of answered the phone. but i think legaly they have to tell you the call is being taped or it dose not stand up in cort.

If you do not own your own dogs you CANNOT APPLY FOR THIS HUNT.  It takes some wishy washy proof that you own your own dogs that are capable of tracking and treeing a lion, I know alot of people are cheating on thier apps and getting around this it pisses me off, I wish the WDFW would make spot check of every applicant. Almost everyone in the state who legitimatedly owns lion dogs should be able to draw one of these tags.  If you own hounds and are approached by people that don't and they want you to catch one for them, don't do it you are cutting your own throat!

They removed this requirement this year, EVERYONE can now apply for the hound permits.  Your just supposed to feed and train and equip your dogs so everyone else can tree and kill a lion over your dogs.

I somewhat agree but if you want to help preserve the sport don't you think it's good to get more and different people involved?

they got him when he made the call. Sometimes its better to ask for forgiveness then to ask for permission!!!!

That sucks.  I would just go for it JR.  Like it was said earlier better to ask for forgivness than permission.  Either way you're doing the deer a huge favor.

This could be viewed both ways.  It evens the tension between boot hunters(who can now apply for a hound tag) and hound hunters.  A lot of bickering was done my the non-hounders as why they couldn't apply.  This was giving hounders an even worse reputation.  Great cause for WDFW to end all hound hunting again.  Another benefit is, now some of the hounders can make a little money and run their dogs even if they or nobody in their party was drawn. :twocents:

I would hope that a guy would secure a pack of dogs before he put in for a special permit.

I don't have a problem with anyone running dogs for you. But isn't it a little arrogant to put in for a permit without the means to successfully hunt.

Man do I agree with you on this. It just ticks me off to hear about a person putting in for a great tag wether it be deer elk
sheep and so on. Just to find out that they do not even have a clue about what they are doing let alone going to do when they get the tag!!!  I don't think a person without hounds should be able to take up space in this draw. Also about walking down a hand full of cats on foot any hounds man knows that this is a bit stretched. Your best bet to get some help would be to not try and talk youself up to much because if this is true you don't even need dogs.. sorry if this upsets some guys .
