Title: Dead Deer in the Rain
Post by: MeatGETTER24 on October 13, 2009, 05:51:57 PM: So where i hunt is mostly canyons and wheat fields, and ive NEVER had to deal with rain(till this year) what are my best bets for finding deer? im guessin beating the brush and doin some hard walkin is in store? any other tips?? thanks guys, everybody have a great opening weekend!

Post by: elkhunter1 on October 13, 2009, 09:09:38 PM: the only time to hunt blacktails is in the rain. what i've always have done is hit a opening in the morning and walk the timber patches during the middle of the day. the rain helps to hide scent and noise.

I've found that during the rain, most Mulie Deer tend to bed down. But I have also seen the opposite. When its windy Mulie Deer tend to bed down.. Example: This years Muzzy hunt.. Opening day, I seen 9 legal bucks. I said, its opening day lets try to find something bigger.. That night it started to become windy and it stayed windy for 3 days.. I never seen another legal buck for three days.. After the wind quit, I started to see deer.

Thats pretty much what I was going to say. I've hunted the wheat country all my life and they bed tight when it's windy. Don't think I've actually shot one in the rain but they still move about. Frankly though I find that the bucks tend to bed down during the day regardless of weather until other hunters push them around a bit. :dunno:

Even many of the hunters that come out for the opening morning won't make it past lunch if it's raining raining hard. This could be the best opener I've seen in a while.

Maybe the clear cuts won't look like pumpkin fields for a change :rolleyes:

Agreed....whiteys and muleys I dont know...but black tails...the worse the weather, it seems the better it is...

especially just after it stops.

Probably don't have to do much praying down there around the Wishkah!! Pretty darn wet in that country. Nothing like sitting under a tree in the rain eating a cold meatloaf sandwich.. Now that's the life.

Dang now im gonna have to invest in some new wiper blades..

On a serious note i like hunting in the rain, not the monsoon rain, but a good steady rain is nice, keeps the woods quite to walk in, keeps just enough noise to mask mine, keeps the scent down and keeps alot of hunters in camp or in there trucks. Also the deer tend to move around or get up to shake off, after the rain stops even if just briefly watch out, lots of critters decide thats the best time to get on the move..

and I love hunting in the rain! Not a damn tsunami but a light but steady rain all day...mmmmm

best deer days Ive ever had were while shivering in the rain!

some hunters wake up at 445am and hear rain and role over back to bed.... if I wake to rain that makes sure no snooze button for me!

good news is... rain + 300 win mag = no big concerns over lost blood trails! Im very excited about this weekend!

Post by: javman on October 14, 2009, 06:27:30 PM: I love sneaking through the timber looking for blacktails when the wind is whistling through the treetops, the rain is coming in sideways, or the snow is falling a couple inches an hour. A little visibility is nice though. Sun is for the summer... It always amazes me how much less road traffic there is when the weather is perfect for hunting. A lot of people don't like to get wet I guess.

Only about 60 more hours till the game starts!
