Title: Covering my orange with my backpack?
Post by: Jamieb on October 14, 2009, 07:16:43 PM: I wear the required hunters orange vest but I also have on a camo daypack. covering the back of my vest. Am I illegal? I figure I am but I'm not about to get a orange bag to cover my daypack.

Post by: robodad on October 14, 2009, 07:22:42 PM: I think that 50% of your upper body covered in orange fulfills the 400sq/in requirement, but as a safety precaution I would get the back pack covered with orange as well, I don't think it spooks the game as much as your movement or scent does anyway and it will make you that much more visable to the idiot looking at you through his scope !!! :bash:

Post by: bobcat on October 14, 2009, 07:26:48 PM: Just wear an orange hat. That should be enough along with the front half of your vest. If not just tell the game warden that you weren't hunting while you were wearing the backpack. There's no law that says you can't carry a gun in the woods during hunting season without orange. So if asked I would just say you only put the backpack on when you were finished hunting. Stupid law anyway. Somebody hiking in the woods doesn't have to wear orange. Either does a hunting guide.

Post by: Tman on October 14, 2009, 08:56:51 PM: I cut a square out of a old orange vest and made a piece that could be used to cover the back of my pack. Cut a few holes in it so that the straps went through the fabric, this way it could be removed or tucked behind the pack if necessary.

When I set up on a spot I'm usually up against some sage a rock or a tree for cover. I'll put the vest on the backside of the cover so anyone coming up behind me will see that someone is there.

I've been doing the same. It would be nice if Blackhawk or any other pack company would just make an orange pack. I'd buy one.

The only time I've seen wardens is when I'm driving, and I usually don't have any orange when I'm doing that.

page 15 of the big game reg book highlighted in two forms of orange to make sure you don't miss it

hunter orange requirements....minimum of 400 sq inches must be worn during any modern firearm general deer or elk season they specifically state a hat alone is not enough....

In all seriousness, keep the orange. When I rifle hunt I'm convinced a deer is going to hear you long before he sees you. You don't need to be cammoed out for the rifle hunt. Way too many long-shot jack@$$&$ out there that you should be more concerned about.

Bean Counter is right deer will hear you most times before they see you. As mentioned above not a bad idea to put some orange on a tree or brush if you are sitting in some place for a period of time. There are a lot of idiots out there and can not be too careful

But, mondern firearm...must wear orange..turkey handouts aren't the game laws, they are the turkey laws. But, I am sure you are kidding anyways.
We wrap a small cloth vest onto the back pack..better safe than sorry.

I say plaster it on! Think about it, you just spent the night in a tent, trailer whatever with 2-20 of your stinkiest friends. Got up and ate bacon, eggs, pancakes sausage, toast and spilled coffee all over your coat. You're wearin yesterdays socks and underwear. Put mentholatum chapstick on. Packed a sandwich in your daypack (that was resting next to the cook stove so that your beverage wouldn't freeze).

Blending in with the environment is not a huge concern for the modern firearm crowd. Not being shot should be !

While I'm pretty sure deer dont care about hunter orange, I'm also pretty sure they care about UV Brightners. Pretty sure anyway!

I and my wife were both warned if we wore the pack we had to have orange on it also. Yes the wardens do drive in walk in units to check people.I too have a badlands 2200 and the meat shelf is out for rifle deer season now!

I wear a small vest and always wear my pack over it on my back but generally hunt private land with little or no others hunters so I feel safe that way. :twocents:

Well it is not orange and camo I bought two different ones. One for archery and one for rifle. Here is a pic I just took. The belt strap has two compartments as well on each side.

I carry an extra orange mesh vest that is super light, and safety pin it to the back pack.
Spend an extra few dollars on some orange and it might save your life, and protect your life.

Oh yeah I've seen one similar to that, but it was built more for bird hunting. I want one that I can comfortably wear all day but then pack at least half of a deer out when needed.
