There are a hundred rams there that you would pull the trigger on but shouldn't.  Be calm.  Lots of sheep, lots of rams.  Its not that hard.  Look at the pics that Norse just posted and the ones on teh 410 slide link.  Those are standing on the highway saying shoot me.  Not the kind of hunt you want and I know you are capable of.  Wait until you see one that you think is unreal.  They are starting to rut so will be very visible soon.

I don't have a sheep tag but I would pass and keep looking for something like #4 in the other pic. You will never get the big one if you shoot the small one first......but that's just me....without a tag. :'(

From Coach: if any one could post ram pics with scores it would be great

OK Coach, here is a good ram and a pic of the ewe he scored on earlier this year. He scored on another ewe too but I don't have a pic of her. I expect lambs in Nov or Dec. I hope this is what you were looking for. It is the best I can come up with right now. :chuckle:

I think I had him at the 160 mark, I basically thought the same but put him at 36 instead of 34.  I honestly wouldn't make a good trophy sheep hunter as I'd have dumped him and been damn happy about it.  Course my standards might be a hair lower with a longbow.

Apparantly the Governors tag fellow is interested in him.  :chuckle:   Nice to meet you Wabonehuntr Sr.  :)

Post by: popeshawnpaul on October 16, 2009, 11:32:40 PM
What little mass he has he holds but the bases aren't that big.  He might be a tad longer and a mid 160 ram but that's how I called it.  He isn't over 14.5 on the bases.
Title: Re: sheep pics needed
Post by: boneaddict on October 17, 2009, 02:44:38 PM
I agree.  I wouldn't give him more than 14 at the bases, but he did hold well throughout. (WHICH) happens to be a  characteristic i like.  Q ram scores higher, but I actually like how this one holds his mass throughout versus the huge bases.....

Ok, score this ram and tell me if you would shoot...  It's a WA cali ram which will help you with your mass measurements.

plus he has great genes

kind of a hard sell in this state since there is only a 1% chance that even a family member may be able to hunt again.

Sure would be nice to see him in about 2 years though.

Profile pic? Its hard to tell length that way, but he definitely flares good and isn't a tight curl... Definitely young... I dont know...I have no idea on those "little guys"...hehehe... its easier for me to separate the 175-200 rams! :0)

Seriously... I am not a ram scorer at all... I'd have to see what other types of rams the area offered before I could decide if that one was a shooter...

Is that ram Phool posted a CA?

The ram in #56 is probably a 150 or so ram.  I think the bases are more like 14" though coach.  Length is probably 30"...  Not a shooter but a great future ram.

Hornseaker, the ram Phool posted is a cali ram.  Want 2 other looks at him?

What little mass he has he holds but the bases aren't that big.  He might be a tad longer and a mid 160 ram but that's how I called it.  He isn't over 14.5 on the bases.

I agree with Pope, looks like a 160 ram to me.

Coach the sheep in the pic at the end of the first page of posts by DDK is 4-5yr old ram and would most likely score between 153-157 pts BC

This sheep has pretty good drop which means decent length. Also hold his mass out into Q4. This ram will score around 170-175 pts BC
Title: Re: sheep pics needed

Pass......pass.......pass........PUT THE BOW DOWN AND SHOOT YOU FOOL!!!!! :chuckle:

The ram on the right is a really nice sheep. He looks like he has small bases but alot of times with sheep that carry this much mass out through Q3 and Q4. It's an intersting picture b/c the ram second from right has what are called "diverging" horns and the ram on the right has "converging" horns. The ram on the right looks much bigger but a lot of times rams with diverging horns score deceptively well...tough to judge.

Yeah sweet curl...also notice how you can see the back (left) horn and how low the horn drops relative to the jaw line. Definite no brainer shooter. I have a real hard time judging sheep over 170 but I would say he has got to score between 178-182 pts maybe a little better.

SCI lol I will take a Rocky  :chuckle: so easy to get people riled up on here  :P

Your just "riled up" Shane because people called your BS on your 140 class moose.  I could care less about your opinion but maybe someone else can gain some knowledge about the issue...

B&C doesn't want to figure out what the boundary is with them as they overlap rocky sheep and have hibridized in a few areas.  Therefore, someone could end up with a mostly rocky sheep and it might be in a cali area.  See the problem?  Also, transplants have varied where they have put both in various areas.  It creates too much of an issue figuring out the boundary.

If you say the word slam then I think you mean Grand Slam.  If you have ever been a member, like me, you would know that tons of people finish their slam with a cali sheep.  It's all over their records and they refer to them as cali sheep.  In fact, many memmbers try to get one of each:  rocky, california, desert, dall, stone, and fannin.  http://www.wildsheep.org/sheep/north_american.htm  Once again, you tout something on the internet and don't think someone will call your BS.  In fact, B&C is about the only organization that doesn't recognize the cali sheep and even they recognize they are a different subspecies but doesn't know how to vibe the problems I've listed above.  This isn't a unique problem...benchleg blacktail, roosevelt elk in the cascades, etc.  You know, they have had the same problems in Russia with the different sub-species of sheep there as well.  There is overlap and it becomes difficult to recognize what is what.

Unless you plan on pulling the 1 Asotin tag, cali is all you're going to get around here.

Here is a whole sheep thread on guys wanting to finish their "North America 5 Slam" with a cali sheep and they are dying to get one...

Well I guess I missed whatever is causing the animosity towards SHANE WA?  Regardless, it seems obvious to me he was just being sarcastic regarding Cali's.  Maybe not?

coachcw, try not to concern yourself too much with score.  You are not hunting in an area that has B&C rams, so a better measurement of success would be killing a good representative of that herd.  The memories of this hunt will be the true trophy, and you will never forget it.  Just don't shoot until you are comfortable with it being the ram you want and will love forever.  It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

Well I guess I missed whatever is causing the animosity towards SHANE WA?

Maybe we aren't being fair.   :dunno:  Maybe we should just nuke all of this and stop the nonsense?  I'm kind of biased on this because I followed the original thread where Shane started all this.  He was just really rude and arrogant.  Here were some of his quotes and maybe this will help bring the animosity into context:

Shane:

"I am in the 3 forks unit all of the time, you couldnt tag a big bull? give me a break.I see 2 or 3 50" bulls every time I am in there. The bull in the road I wouldnt even consider a shooter in that unit.Sounds like a lame hunter to me"

"Nope not to me, If I draw a tag here I will shoot a state record and hopefully a world record.A set of sheds found here on June 3 are on there way to be scored as the new world record sheds, they also found another set similiar but a little smaller. My buddy has a set that scored around 200". If it was down to the last 2 days I would shoot that bull.People see pics of moose harvested, most tag holders shoot the first bull they see or they do not scout enough to know what is running around here.I see monster bull moose around here all of the time,I know where a monster is right now in the huckleberry unit.I cant even begin to grasp the concept of hunting 30 days and couldnt shoot a big bull, all I have to say is WOW and what a disappointment for the hunter."

"Where do you guys live? West side of the state, that would explain it all.You guys act like moose hunting is hard.Another question have you ever hiked the mountains in the selkirk,49 and huckleberry? There isnt a trip to these mountains where i dont see big bulls.200 inches is being fair,if you want would you like his e-mail? maybe you could talk to him yourself. The sheds found this year are 240+ and I have seen them in person. Its ok to be jealous. Corey,
Just don't get caught up in the heat of the moment like I did on my Utah deer hunt. When you see a monster, double check to make sure it is the same one when it comes out of the obstructions. I fck'd up that way and didn't get that monster that I should have got after 12 years of applying. I should have taken the time to verify the same buck when he reappeared.  You only have one crack at it. Have fun and good luck!

You most likely will see plenty of rams. Take your time, get a good rest if possible, and make a great shot. I haven't kept up on all your posts, but a rangefinder can be a God send. If helped me a bunch in Alaska on my sheep hunt.

Cherish every moment of the hunt, take lots of pictures, and bring em back to the boys!

Title: Re: sheep pics needed
Post by: huntnphool on November 03, 2009, 04:11:57 PM
There are bigger ones in there, low 170 class. I think he was going to try and put a stock on him with archery gear. If he is okay with a mid 160 class then even if he pushes this one out, there will be plenty others in that class he can take with a rifle later. I'd pass on this one for now, first day and all, but its his tag and I'm behind him 100% whatever he decides. I'm loaded up and ready for the call to go help him get it out though.

Post by: AKBowman on November 04, 2009, 04:23:50 PM
I dont know about that sheep being low 160's. Not the best picture but that thing has a ton of drop to the right horn...well below the jaw line. Lots of times their decievingly long when they are shaped like that. I would put that sheep in the upper 160's (167-169pts)

He should try and kill that thing if it wanders into a good spot for a stalk. With a sheeps senses generally you have to get within bow range about 4 times with a bow before you can close the deal.
Title: Re: sheep pics needed
Post by: boneaddict on November 04, 2009, 04:50:38 PM
I agree AK.   I'd try very hard to deflate that thing with my longbow and I would be as thrilled as any OIL hunter could be.  He is in the upper percentile for trophy rams in that unit.
Title: Re: sheep pics needed
Post by: popeshawnpaul on November 04, 2009, 05:41:38 PM
He's a nice ram but there are two bigger ones on the mountain.  For kicks, what are your individual measurements?  I had it at 33, 14.5, 14, 12, 9.  165 total.  With two rams in the 170's, I'd let him walk...?
Title: Re: sheep pics needed

I like your mass guestimates but I think you're underestimating the length. I have him more like 37 inches (at least on the left side) he carries his mass well which adds a lot of length.

With archery tackle I would have to try to take that ram. Sooooo much can happen when trying to kill a sheep with a bow. If it didnt happen that would be OK but you have to make best of your opportunities with a bow when you have them. Nice sheep regardless a real trophy for anyone with a bow. Go Coach!

I'll go 164 Pope and knowing there are a couple 170+ rams in there I would pass as well, he has a month and with all the mid 160 rams running around out there, dropping one with a couple days to go shouldn't be a problem. :twocents:

He just can't be 37" AK.  I got a better image of him and maybe that will help out the scoring.  If you put him up side by side with Andrew288's dad's ram that is 37 on one side and 34 on the other, they come from the same stock, the ram is about or slightly less than the 34" side.  I could buy 34" but no larger.  That would put him at 167 which I would buy.  In my mind there is no way I can logically get that ram to score more than 170.

It's fun to debate it though.   :chuckle:

So which is bigger 408 or the one we are scoring.  Prsonally I'd shoot the one we were scoring before 408, but that is with just one camera angle. I'm not commenting in regards to Coaches choices, asking a serious question.
Title: Re: sheep pics needed
Post by: Elkstuffer on November 05, 2009, 08:55:31 AM
Last night I told coach to shoot a ram that HE would be happy with and one that HE thinks looks good. Forget all this scoring *censored*. The biggest ram on the mountain isn't always the best looking. All of this scoring talk over the last 4 months has put alot of pressure on the poor guy to perform. It's easy for everyone to sit on their computers telling him what ram to shoot. He's the one hoofing it up and down that mountain. There is a reason that the tag is filled in 1.5 days. Most guys can't even get out of bed the second day.

This is just my opinion and is in no way directed at anyone in general. :twocents:
Title: Re: sheep pics needed
Post by: boneaddict on November 05, 2009, 09:01:44 AM
Its indeed a good opinion.  Having that deer tag last year, I shot the buck I wanted, not the one that would score the highest by any means, so know exactly what you mean.  I didn't feel pressure to perform though, I think thats more of a cop out than anything.   Just have a damn good time and enjoy that tag.  You only get to do it once.

Elkstuffer I don't think anyone is putting pressure on him to shot the biggest one on the mountain by any means we are just having fun debating the pics sent through. BTW when I spoke to him HE wanted to hold out and try to find the largest one out there, I will be happy as heck when he shoots the one he wants no matter which one it is!  :)

Oh and Shawn the one I was scoring at 159 is 408!

By the way, I hold Coach in a WAY different light that that other **** can't think of a word worth printing.   Talking score is fun and its cool he has goals and even if he shoots a dink I will be happy for him.  He is not a smack talkin jerkwad.  Lofty goals are fine, smack talkin is a good way to make yourself look like a fool.  There is a huge differentiation between the two.

I understand what you're saying M_ray. Last night at the shop I could tell that his head was spinning. He had seen probably 80% of the sheep in the unit. I was probaby out of line when I said we were putting pressure on him. My apologies if anyone took it wrong.

I'm trying to get ahold of him. He said he was going up Meystre canyon today. I thought he should go up the next canyon to the east. I've been watching sheep in there all morning from the house. I think the pressure up top yesterday may have pushed them over one or two canyons. :dunno:

Other than Coach only the auction tag guy would be hunting in there, unless a tribe member decides to go out, and if I had the auction tag I wouldn't be hunting there anyway :twocents:

Like I said earlier I'm behind Coach 100% whatever he decides, there is nothing wrong sitting here hoping he tags a bigger one than what we have been scoring though. Having hunted with an OIL tag I can tell you it helps to have guys input their :twocents: and keep you focused on your own goals. Seeing all those animals you definately get a itchy trigger finger.

Do you think the other one is bigger or smaller?

For the record I think the first one in the blurry pics is larger but not by much maybe 4-5 inches at best ... pretty much the same mass but longer IMO.  :) I think he will find a larger one to take!
Title: Re: sheep pics needed
Post by: M_ray on November 05, 2009, 10:18:23 AM
If you look at the head on pic that ram flares out wider which will add a little to the length but what do I know it looks like a nice one and probably the average one in that unit but there are larger. I scouted this area a few years back with a friend that had the tag and this was the average in there ... if it came right down to it he can get one like this just about everyday out so no need to get itchy trigger with these guys.
Title: Re: sheep pics needed
Post by: Elkstuffer on November 05, 2009, 10:24:58 AM
I thought that coach had said that the auction tag holder tagged out in the Tieton unit. Why he was hunting there I have no idea :twocents: The tribe usually doesn't tag out or even go out with there two Clemens tags until the snow brings them WAY down. There isn't a road that goes up the side of the hill. :chuckle: There was a bird hunter coming out of Meystre canyon at dark last night. He might have stirred them up pretty good if he did a bunch of shooting.

He is looking at so many rams his head should be spinning.  He knows he can kill a mid 160s ram anyday so there is nothing wrong with pulling back, being patient, and think about the one you want.  Its a long season and we know there is a big one in there he hasn't seen.  Take a few days and just soak it in.  There is no hurry and you want to enjoy the hunt.

elkstuffer i think you are right about the auction guy tagging out in the tieton unit, seems like i remember hearing that to. i think it is great to have all of us behind him i don't look at it as pressure i look as it as encouragement some of us might never have the chance that he has right now. and it sure shows that he has restaint from not busting one of the first 160's he saw and trying to do it with his bow. i don't know if i could pass some of those rams they are awsome trophy's to me and like said score does not amount to much when you harvest a animal that you really wanted. i have several book scoring animals, but i don't enter them in because, they are a trophy to me not by the " but the experience i had taking them and the pain and joy of the hunt. I can't stop lookin at the computer i have high anticipation of seeing a great ram no matter the score.

I'm surprised that you guys think there are rams that sized crawling all over this unit.  I've seen A LOT of rams on this mountain and most of them aren't that big.   :dunno:   If there were, I'd sure think the record would be higher and the govenor tag guys wouldn't be mostly shooting 170 rams elsewhere.
Title: Re: sheep pics needed
Post by: popeshawnpaul on November 05, 2009, 04:20:37 PM
I don't think there are 170 rams all over that mountain.  I've only seen one 170+ ram and 300shortmag's friend shot it.  I have heard rumors of a limp ram that is supposed to go 170.  There may be more than one 170 ram.  Plus, a guide I know has been watching a 170 ram in Cleman for a month now.  Not sure if it's the same one I had at 172 or if they are different rams but I suspect they are the same ram.  The raffle tag holder tagged out in Cleman last Saturday with a 160 class ram.

The auction tag holder is not looking in Cleman much for a big ram.  They had the 170 ram spotted as a backup ram.  They are looking elsewhere but it's a lot easier to access Cleman than get a boat and find a Manson ram.  Umptanum isn't easy to access so nobody wants to go in there despite the fact that I found and have pictures of 2 rams that approach or exceed 170".

It is very possible there are no 170 rams in Cleman right now.  That mountain is crawling with 150 and 160 rams and it's hard to differentiate between a 160 and a 170 ram.  A lot of people mis judge and just are happy with a nice ram and so the average hunt lasts about a day or two.  The record isn't higher because WA hasn't started producing rams like this until fairly recently.  We just planted Manson about 10 years ago and we only give out 1 tag in Swakane if that every now and then.  The Cleman population had a lot of problems for a while until they supplemented the herd with new genetic stock.

Plus, not everyone enters their rams in the book.

Do you think the other one is bigger or smaller?

For the record I think the first one in the blurry pics is larger but not by much maybe 4-5 inches at best ... pretty much the same mass but longer IMO.  :) I think he will find a larger one to take!

The one in the blurry pic is longer by 4 inches or more. I need to see more pics. I'm sure he is having a blast up there. Hopefully he sticks with the bow. Is he shooting a compound?

He did end up getting one with a rifle.  The one in the blurry pic was nice but on the first day it was smart to pass knowing the 172" ram that the older gentleman in the other thread got was out there so he held out.  A smart decision in my opinion.  We'll all wait to see what he got and the story.

It's really not my story to tell even if I had one.  Coach will be on or send word when he gets time.  I'm envious as he has managed to hunt bighorns 3 more days than I have.

I was able to get an exclusive picture of the ram though.   :chuckle:

Well Corey just dropped off his ram with me and what an exceptional ram it is. Throwing score out the window this ram has so much more character than normal. His 10 1/2 + years of age (yes, I said 10 1/2 +) makes him a more desirable trophy than a 172 ram in my book. The stories that this ram could tell and the things that he has seen over the years could make your head spin. He will be the oldest ram out of 25+ that I will have had the pleasure of mounting and definitely the oldest on the mountain. I'd be willing to bet that he is in the top 5 or less of being one of the oldest taken in the state.

It was great getting to spend some time with Corey and his friends Dan and Chris. I feel like I've made a good friend.

It just goes to show that beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder and this is one beautiful ram. Congratulations Corey!

Talked with Corey a few hours ago. He said the biologist went to pull the front teeth and they were gone. The teeth that he was able to pull were pulled out with his fingers, no pliers needed. Sounds to me like the ram probably wouldn't have made it through another year.

great hunt . I give a quick story with more to come , I took a gun on a bow hunt and made a quick dession to shoot when limpy showed , not the huge ram I thaught from the stories but an old boy at least 10 1/2 years old. no front teeth and on his last year for sure. maybe I did gods work to save him a cruel death . he's a throphie in my mind . I got to hunt with two great friends . and met new ones for sure . thanks to pope ,phool , elkstuffer I know that I've met new friends for sure.thanks for taking the ride with me. Coach

no doubt pat , he kinda redefines what a throhpy is to me , great hunt , being able to to pass on game , spending time with good friends , meeting new ones, harvesting an old mature animal in a way spareing him a disgracefull way out this winter no doubt . then realizing that most of my fellow hunters see it the same way. All this reasures me that this is a great group  of guys that respect the sport and the wildlife as much as I do . Thanks Coach
