Post by: sandythebowtotenmama on October 17, 2009, 06:21:56 PM
Well I have scouted & learned the roads and I have 2 more trips over to Entiat before I leave for my Entiat-C Buck only hunt, any more info I need to know or that would be helpful? Thanks to everyone who has helped me I really appreciate it and I will be taking my laptop and wireless internet with me so I can update my hunt. Hopefully I will have a nice buck to show you all:) :archery_smiley:

I think Entiat C is the archery hunt, but I could be wrong.

Good luck on your hunt.

I seem to remember that you were gathering info about the Entiat hunt quite a while ago - way to get started early!

Seems like you did the preseason work the "right" way - asked around for info well before the hunt and visited the unit to learn it.  You should do great!

Post by: sandythebowtotenmama on October 20, 2009, 02:23:40 PM
DRDANTDC-I know I suck. I hear that a lot:)LOL.
Carpsniperg2-Sorry I guess I should have said, I have scouted, learned the Rd's.IE where they go, walked old Rd's., old trails, went high to get bearings, looked for land marks as a reference point so I won't be the lost hunter ;)
Halflife65- I did and THANK you for the info you gave me back then. I spent my summer weekends doing my Entiat homework, kept note's from all relpies/PM's in a notebook(with names of who helped me) I bought just for my Entiat Hunt, this may be my only hunt of a lifetime, well unless I'm lucky enough to go out of state on a hunt of a lifetime:) I like to get to know the area I'm going to be hunting in as well as I can, I don't want anybody saying-a stupid woman got herself lost, why don't they just stay home where they belong, kinda crap :) :chuckle:  (no offense to anybody)

Scouting and planning are the things that help make for a good hunt so hope you get a big one. There are women who are on here that can shoot as well as clean and pack and are darn good hunters hope to see your pictures and stories so don;t stay home.

Looks to me like you have enough info already with previous conversations and scouting trips.  Keep your determination up and you'll have fun.  It's not an easy hunt and you will work to find good bucks.

Earn this buck through you own scouting and hard work!  And don't be disappointed if you go home empty handed, most do with this tag!

Jstone-Thank you and good luck to your son, and hopefully you will have time to get your elk ;)
Buckhorn2-Thanks for the encourgement:)
HardCorpsHuntr-If I eat my tag I'll be very sad and I will have to deal with my family for missing Thanksgiving, lol. Usually when I put my mind to something, I get it done, but I have heard of the hardships of this hunt, so thanks for the head's up ;)

Good luck on your hunt.  I can't remember, but did you end up getting that Nikkon rangefinder?  What do you think of it?
Title: Re: Getting ready for my Entiat-C Buck Hunt
Post by: sandythebowtotenmama on October 20, 2009, 04:03:39 PM
SpokaneSlayer- Thanks! Yes I got the Nikkon Archers Choice rangefinder and I love it. I used my old one and compared it to the Nikkon, when shooting downhill/uphill I was 5 yds. off, and that wasn't a real steep hill.
Title: Re: Getting ready for my Entiat-C Buck Hunt
Post by: SpokaneSlayer on October 20, 2009, 04:12:36 PM
Outstanding!  Mine served me well during the early season.  Only got one shot and it was uphill.  The range was dead on but I must have pushed the arrow to the right, missing right in front of the buck's chest.
Title: Re: Getting ready for my Entiat-C Buck Hunt
Post by: sandythebowtotenmama on October 21, 2009, 11:27:41 PM
I'm glad I got the Nikkon, I want to be right on, not 5 yds. off. That would suck to miss cause I was off by 5 yds. due to an uphill/downhill shot, but I've seen in Entiat that may be the shot I'll get, not much flat ground there:)
Ya the left and right thing, no rangefinder for that.

Sandy, if we get significant snow or conditions are wrong, please use care and don't be afraid to use your chains.  I'm not sure where Coachcw pointed you to but I grew up over there and have hunted that unit a bit.  Missed a sure 180 buck about 3 years ago when I had the entiat C.  Fog was to thick for the range finder and I guessed wrong.  Arrow went right under his chest.  Was a monster buck that I had watced for 3 days and finally walked him down.  Oh well.  Check your p'ms.

Hey Pete! How's it going? Ya I have a place in mind, up Potato Ck. there is a large place just about 1/4 mile off the Entiat River Rd. that could hold a few camps, another about 1/2 up and a bunch up past the 1st. left. I kinda want to camp low in case of snow, I don't want to get snowed in w/trlr.lol What did you have in mind? In case those are taken. I'm going over the night of the 19th. so I can scout in hunter orange and listen for gun fire on the 20th. last day for rifle:) (And see what they got for antlers,LOL) I'm taking rummy bears to help me sleep ;)I hate having a sleeping disorder, I'm forcing myself up at 4:30 and to bed at 9:30. Making ton's of food and freezing it so I don't have to cook, just heat up :) Good luck in late season, I'll update from Entiat. And if I get something(fingers crossed) this site will be the first to know, then my parents :chuckle:

well i was there today. I went up over Eagle creek to check out my Swakane area before me and the boy went into the entiat to do a little scouting for does. UPDATE. (1) 3 point, (1) 2 point and about 12-15 does in the Entiat. Swakane chased a bear around and saw (1) 3 point and 5 does. A bunch of deer sign in the snow up high. Warm day snow melted. No snow in the Entiat well down low. If tyhe Swakane doesnt work out my boy should have no problem gettn on a doe.

I went up to do some "looking" today and this is what I saw, a little buck was walking right to me, he looks up and see's me standing behind the truck with my camera and takes a right turn, he goes down into the road and walks the other way, I called to him, he stopped and I took his pic. before he went into the trees at the left and walked off...

There's already four feet at Stevens (4000'), so the migration bucks must be moving lower.  They may not be down low by Saturday, but they can't be far behind.

Just looked at the Stevens/ highway 2 webcams...it's snowing hard right now.

be very careful if you go up on top in the snow.  It warmed up yesterday up there then froze, it will be really slick, and also the snow drifts.  Just be careful, take your time, and just park it and walk if anything.  Also the mud, its like ice almost, some places its really like clay and can put you in the ditch or over the road.  If i was you looking for a buck, stay low, very low, in mud. Lots of bucks in there and you should get a shot opportunity there as well.  Good luck,

Today was opening day and started out great :) We saw a nice 3x3 with 7 doe's and a 2x2 smaller buck  They were coming down a game trail, so we turned around and went back the way we came in and found a nice trail coming off, crossing the rd. and going up the other side. So I got out (driver went on) and walked up the trail going up the other side, I could see them all coming down so I waited for them. A man walking thru the area, not hunting,in street clothes spooked them off.
About an hour later we found them all again in a steep ravine with no cover, so we waited, they got spooked by a guy coming in from the bottom thru a creek. We watched them while eating, they ended up right behind a house with a no hunt/tresspass sign.
We went up another rd. and found over 30 does, yes we counted them 3 times looking for a nice buck to get on. We did not see a buck with them, but 30 plus does, wow. It was close to dark when we came off the hill, that rd. sucks! So tomorrow it's back to where we saw that big buck with his ladies the first time and maybe I can get up on the side they were on if conditions are right. They was no snow on Mud at 2300 ft. We need snow! Call the North Pole and send a snow elf this way :chuckle:

Oh my gosh! What 2 days we have had! I couldn't keep a connection last night, sorry. If I can keep this connection I'll try and post a few pic's. Who ever called the North Pole and got that Snow Elf to drop some white stuff, thank you, do it again:) I was stalking this little buck all over hell today, that bugger can walk, and only 3 legs, he was wounded and not using the other at all. I lost him when he went over a hill(lots of those here) but found a real nice buck running a herd of does, that was after 4, so we backed out and will try for him tomorrow. We wanted to get off the hill by dark, the Rd's. are good, but icy in a few areas that we were. On the way down the hill we saw 2 more nice bucks running does too, so there are 3 that I hope to try for(one at a time of course)It has been an awesome 2 days. So that's 5 stalks in 3 days, not too bad, I'm not trophy hunting but would like a nice buck! Goodnight from Ardenvoir, sure is beautiful up here in the snow:)
Thanks guys for your messages you all left:)

We had freezing rain last night off and on here in the lower elevation and all night up high. We had 3 stalks today. First thing this morning we ran into the big guy, he was over 400 yds. up a ravine and the stalk was on. Scott got to 40 yds. of his does, but the big guy left and went into the next ravine and he didn't know it. We went up higher and found a nice 3x3 running does, got within 90 yds. then the wind shifted and they were gone. On our way down after 4 we ran into a big 2,I think I took his pic. a few weeks ago. Got to about 50 yds. and ran out of light, so backed out and ran into another buck! What a busy day! Scott saw a few 2x2's while he was waiting for me to come back out from the last stalk, that ravine has a ton of deer in it, so back in the morning and hopefully a nice buck! Pictures above of the buck (the big guy) Goodnight from Ardenvoir!

I've been up and down these hills and ravines for 5 days in a row.
There ain't no stopping a buck when he get's the urge to go.
Round and round, up and down chasing a crazy doe, you look left and right, shake your head, when did he go.
It's like a lost and found in a border town, you ask another hunter-have you seen anything, he just looks at you and says, no I haven't seen a thing.

Not that my opinion matters, but id like to know where the pic of the snow is from. :dunno: I just spent 5 days in Entiat and the most snow i saw was on forest mountian and it was only 5 to 6 inches. all the way up. Nothing like the snow in your picture Sandy. I did see more snow in Brief, but only because i took a drive to look at that part of my map. Care to inform us Sandy? Best ive seen was an average 4 point on mud creek behind some private property some one spooked up the hill. He had 5 does with him. I have seen 2 women in the hills. If i may ask Sandy, what are you driving or riding in?  I took a shot at a 2 point this morning on mud but missed. My last day and i didnt want to go home empty but i did. Saw a blood mess and fur this morning close to the bottom of Oklahoma. Some one got one. It was about 11:30am. Went up Oklahoma looking then came back down. Headed home.

Doesn'tmatter, stand up on top of mud as far as you can go and look. The pic'a are scenery from up there looking in all directions, I believe the snowy peaks may actually be on the Swakane side, not too sure, just taking pic's for my album. Are you sure you missed that 2pt. on Mud cause we found one dead today, I'll post his pic tomorrow.

I have until the 30th. I see bucks everyday, you have to get out of your vehicle and walk. I take the pic's from my vehicle because my camera show a better pic than my cheap bino's that is why I have pic's of bucks. I get in there but can't get past the 70/80 yd doe barrier. Today at 7 am I was set up in a real nice spot, there was a buck and 2 does coming in, they needed to come another 70 yds for shooting range, another bowhunter shot a doe, took his truck over the tundra, there was no rd. and was making all kinds of noise getting his deer out and spooked my buck back to where he was coming from. The second set up had a bowhunter charging down a hill after that big buck that needed to come another 150 yds. and spooked him and about 20 does down to the main rd. area. The third buck we spooked because we thought they were all does, bummer. And yes I am having a good time, a very tiring good time. I leave in the dark and come back in the dark, eat snacks during my hunts and dinner at night, dinner is the only main meal we get because we are too busy busting our butts on steep hills and deep ravines, because that is where the deer are. I didn't get pic's of the 2 big guys today because I leave my camera in the vehicle, one was a 4x4 w/6 inch drop tine chasing does, and a 3x3 and a 4x4 I did get a pic of. I'll post it in a minute, I'm trying to type and heat my already homemade turkey dinner, it is Thanksgiving you know and the first time I haven't ever been with my family.

Please note I take these pic's of bucks with my camera that has an awesome zoom so I can see if they are bucks, I have cheap bino's that don't show well at all.

Today was a very exciting day for me :) I took a shot at a buck for the very first time ever, I actually got in close enough to a small 3 pt. buck that I shot at and missed, it was a rushed shot, he was getting nervous and his doe was leaving the area and he was getting ready to go over the hill, I led him too much and shot under his neck, but it was a clean miss :'(  It was just after 4 P.M. tonight and even though I missed I am so happy I got to release an arrow at a buck. My husband is doing this :bash: because he hasn't been able to get past the 70 yd. mark because of does. So I got close today, maybe I'll get it right tomorrow ;) Goodnight from Ardenvoir!

If anyone went home from Entiat with an unfilled tag, get back before the morning! Last night was soooo cold and the moon was shining bright, the deer fed and moved all night. No one that I saw and talked to had seen any deer today, then all of a sudden at about 2:30 a whole herd came thru the trees, I was about 150 yds. downhill from them, ton's of does and 3 big huge bucks. Now I know what a Entiat Monster Mulie looks like! So we followed them and they went high and we lost sight of them, so we went back down and went to another area to talk to someone and there was another big herd, more does and 3 3x3's and a little 2pt. that was at 4:20. I have never seen so many deer in one place. I took a pic of one buck that os decieving check it out, I'll post as soon as I can get it uploaded. I only got one buck because the herds were moving at a pretty good pace, I hope tomorrow is a wonderful day:) Goodnight from Ardenvoir!

Sandy I must say this.  I want to thank you.  You came on this site and caught a little slack for asking for help and you have turned it full circle and have shared your hunt with us all from start to finish.  I can't thank you enough.  Some people come on here, get info and leave and never to be heard from again, others linger and pick up as much info as they can and do not share any of their knowledge of shooting, hunting, fishing, reloading, or friendliness.  Some pick and choose on what to share and who to share it with, and that is ok.

You have been a model member.  For that I am thankful.

Good luck to you on the hunt.

So, what an awesome experience and adventure that was! I learned so much about deer and bowhunting that will always ,always be with me the rest of my life. I want to thank ALL of you for being there, following my adventure, giving advice and support. I am sorry to have let you down, but I did not fill my tag, I tried my hardest and pushed myself like never before, but I have to say that I had a great time doing it and want to do it again. I got one more look at that 3x3, BTW he has little eye guards. I saw a herd of deer coming along side this ridge I was traveling along, someone higher had spooked them and I watched as they came from a full run to a walk, got ahead of them and set up, they had 3 game trails that they were using the last couple of days, so I was ready for 2 of the trails, not the 3rd. the 1st. trail and 2nd. are 25 yds. apart, the 2nd. trail and 3rd. are 44 yds. apart. I was close to the 2nd. trail to cover the first 2 hiding under a rock outcropping, excellent cover BTW. The does came off, but the buck came in behind me, I could hear him and slowly turned towards him, he was 63 yds and was crossing into the brush and was going to cross the creek,I thought he would come across the hillside to get back to his does so I got set up to shoot him at 20 yds. where he would be broadside when he saw someones truck on the rd. below and went straight up, so I didn't get to shoot him, but did get a good look at him and noticed it was the same buck and the he had eye guards. I had words with him while he was standing at 75 yds uphill. So at the end of the day my frustrated husband who never even got that close to a shot said it was time to go home, so we loaded up last night and got home real late, so I couldn't post last night.

I don't think there is anyway you let anyone down, not even yourself. You got to experience twice as much if not more than alot of others on this site and you shared it with us. The amount of knowledge you learned from this trip alone speaks volumes in the life of a hunter. As you know...it is not about the kill. It is about the experience. Thank you for sharing YOUR experience with us. Every time I went online to this site...yours was the first thread I wanted to read. I always want to be in the field and by reading your thread...I was. It sounds to me that this hunt was a succesfull one at the very least....tagged out or not. As pathfinder said...you are an asset to this site. :rockin:

No let down at all Sandy.  Thanks for the hunt.  I appreciate the time and effort into doing one and posting it on here.  I have more respect for tag soup than I do someone who busts a dink just to bust a dink.  You can't shoot big ones if you shoot small ones.

:yeah:  If it's any consolation (and it probably isn't), I ate that tag last year.  Passed on a number of smaller bucks but just didn't get the buck in front of me that I wanted shoot (got close but didn't get it done.)  The first time I've eaten a deer tag in about 15 years...

Anyway, I was totally entertained by your posts and, for what it's worth, think that you did a really good job asking solid questions and scouting the unit (your pre-season pictures of terrain and bucks as evidence).  Way to give it 100%!

Agree with all of the above, and it's good to NOT hear about how you flung an arrow at 75 yards because you couldn't get any closer. Better to eat tag soup than to leave a wounded buck out there to die a slow death.

Thank you ALL for your wonderful comments :) I really did enjoy the Entiat Unit. Now I am a walking map, lol, of certain areas of course. I took what I learned and found new things to add. I noticed that almost all the does had twins, and that not all the does were afraid of me. I was getting ready to leave the truck one afternoon when I noticed a doe standing/eating not 50 yds. away. So I stayed there and waited to see if maybe there was a buck with her, next thing I knew there were 4 more does, watching me while eating, so I took some pics of them, I thought that was cool, they let me walk around without running off. It was a great experience that will last a lifetime and I have my diary and pic's to share with future generations of hunters ;) Thank you for all your advice/help I really appreciated it all!

He got doe fever more than a couple of times. had the arrow fall off of the string twice, Had a few run off from some morons shooting a gun above us in the selico area. 4 guys in a pick up truck GRAY CHEVY. Not cool especially knowing that there are bow hunters with camo in the area. And some wind change. But lots of action and lots of deer. GOOD TIMES
