Well my good friend from Lewiston drew a unit 11 buck tag along with his wife, brother, and father. His name is Al and he's quite a talented hunter that likes to get into the deep holes and hunt where others are afraid to go... well we held true to that yesterday!
Al has been hunting for his families tags more so than for himself, as he's the only one capable of going down into the breaks of the Snake River in this unit. Well after my field trip on Saturday I had all my gear loaded and drove down to give him a hand. Met them at camp and his wife said she was going to sleep in the next morning so me and Al could give it all we had. I kept telling him we're going to get you're buck, its gonna happen...
He parked the truck at 5:30 and were off hiking. Bailing off this ridge to head down into the breaks where we guess all the deer have been pushed by all the hunters... didn't see a boot track all day.
8:00 we've spotted 5 bucks, and probably 20 does. Two shooter bucks with the bigger one which we named 'Hoss' being the farthest down into the breaks, nearly to the snake river... Anther nice 4 point was down below us and is a decent position for a stalk. We wait until 10 for everything to bed down and we plan our stalk which included a 1500' elevation drop straight down to get to the first flat... we belly crawl up the ridge with me on the binos/rangefinder and I have Al's drop chart for his 7mm (he does a lot of long range shoots and is very proficient). We find the two smaller bucks and I know exactly where the big 4 point is bedded but he's out of sight. With Al on the rifle we blow the grunt tube twice. I see antler tips raise up and square to us! "Al there he is, he's gonna stand!"
Buck stands up, I tell Al; '24" wide, 22" tall, good fronts, nice mains, maybe go 155 short on mass". He gave Al a great quartering away shot but we passed on him knowing there was a bigger buck down below. Buck trots off the flat and down out of sight. We grab our packs and go after Hoss... get down to where we can see where we thought we saw Hoss go into a draw to bed down and a couple does above the draw bust us and spook. Then out of the draw I see a buck step out and all I can tell is he's a 4 point. "Al there he is, range 545, 1.6 mils" (not sure if the mils are correct but for the sake of the story lets assume they are!) :chuckle:
BOOM! Al tells me he shot low,
Buck falters and takes off up the draw, Boom! Miss...
Buck pops up on a finger ridge, "645 yards, 2.6 mils"
BOOM!....... WHACK! ;)
Buck kicks the air and runs back down the draw...
We run up to wait for him to come out the bottom, 2-3 minutes go by and nothing... finally he stumbles out of the draw "415 yards, .9 mils"
BOOM! Buck DROPS! :IBCOOL:
We're all hugs and smiles and whoops, get down to the buck and it was the SAME BUCK that we passed on earlier that day... we figured the big guy must've headed over the edge later once we lost him in the draw, but when this buck popped out he was 30 yards from where we'd seen "Hoss" that morning. Oh well we were still very happy as Al would've shot this buck had we not of seen the bigger one down below anyways... He's been waiting a long time and this was his muley hunt of a lifetime. He usually hunts archery only.
Another interesting fact; 30 minutes go by and we're still quartering/cleaning this buck and I sit back and look around.... 200 yards up the draw where Al shot the buck is Hoss. yep he'd been bedded there the entire time, had 6 does spook and run not 80 yards above him, and had this 4 point shot within 40 YARDS downhill of him and he NEVER MOVED! He was happy as a clam just sitting there watchin us cut up his buddy. I swear them big bucks have a 6th sense about how many tags you're carrying! :chuckle:
With 75 lb packs we started packing at 2 O'clock on the dot and made it back to the truck at 7... we're both in very good shape but this pack was by FAR the hardest I've ever done. But 30 yards from the top of the ridge I found a VERY nice 6 point bull shed from about a 310" bull so that was cool! Here's some pictures!
Al with his buck... see the tallest peak in the background? The truck was 1.2 miles PAST that....

Another view... very nice buck but is real short on mass... probably 145-150" realistically

Another one of me and Al... his brother met us up top with extra water...

Picture of me and Al with where we shot the buck in the background... See the little blonde hill to the left of Al's arm about 3' that drops down to the Snake? Just to the left of that hill in the flat is where we shot the buck and had to pack him out... We climbed 2200' in elevation in about 1.3 miles with 75 lb packs...

Well thats all, I leave thursday night for my elk tag in the same unit and my opener is on Sunday! Stay tuned!

Before anyone starts, its not required to wear blaze orange in Idaho.
Nicely done MichaelJ, beautiful pics and country.

Thanks phool! I'm sore today but I know that tomorrow is going to be worse! lol

AWSOME...Congrats to the hunter for the kill and to the finder of the shed. Good luck elk hunting

Not trying to be an a-hole and will probably get reamed for saying this:
"He is does a lot of long range shoots and is very proficient"
It took him 3 shots with a 7mm to get this deer. If he was shooting at 150 yds not a big deal; it happens to all of us. But he was lobbing rds at over 500 yds.
More than a 500 yard shot at a deer is a very, very long shot in the field. An unforeseen gust of wind can cause a wounded lost animal at that range. In my opinion too long for most people unless you practice every week and receive training. Even then a very long shot. But I guess all of the hunting shows and youtube videos say it's ok.
Much different than shooting at a controlled environment (range on a bench). Plus you are humping up and down hills all day. Too long a shot for me to take and I was on a military and law enforcement sniper team so have a bit of a background in shooting( I spent 100's of hours in training). I used to shoot a lot of 3 d archery, pistol tournaments too.
My friend took 7 shots to kill a deer on the Yak firing center 2 years ago with a 7mm. All shots over 500 yds. Also said he was an expert long distance shooter too. Nice buck but little usable meat as it was so shot up. I gave him a hard time and he answered I got my rack.
Nice deer by maybe next time get a bit closer. Maybe 300 yds.
On a positive note I do respect that you and your friend are hardcore hunters and willing to bust your humps and go where most people are not willing to go.Good on you!
I guess the reason I posted is because I see a lot of guys bragging on here taking 500 yds plus shots on elk, deer. 75 yds plus archery shots, 200 yds shots with ml's ( open sights) etc. Everyone that hunts a lot will lose a wounded animal during their hunting careers. It happens and it really sux. Every year I find quite a few gut shot deer and elk after hunting seasons when I go hiking.
When you start shooting at these super long ranges the chances really increase :twocents:
Anyway nice pics and a good story
-
Ribka, I don't think he was bragging just telling us the facts. Thats looks like a heck of a pack. Good luck on your Elk hunt, hope you get the 1 you want.

Cool man. I think that is a respectable unit 11 buck for nowadays in that area.

Understandable... Al works and Seekins precision and they build custom gun parts/rifles and he long distance shooting is pretty much his career. He's on the range an average of twice a week when its not winter out. He's got his gun dialed in and can nail a 5" steel plate at 700 yards 10 out of 10 times. The only wind that we had was the daytime thermals and hes got mile hashes on his optics. Not sure why I'm explaining this as I don't have to justify it, but I will say out of a vice rest his gun shoots 1.5" groups at 400 yards... Basically he had the ability, and in this country long shots are the norm...
I will tell you this, we had a conversation while hiking that morning and Al did say that he knows he has the ability but if its at all possible to get closer he wants a less than 350 yard shot because like you say, every little variable is maximized with longer shots and the chances of wounding a buck go up exponentially. I agree with you on the bragging part, and I hope I didn't come across that way. Heck it wasn't even me shooting... Just how the hunt turned out.
Thanks for the compliments guys! We won't be forgetting this hunt anytime soon!!!

sounds like a great hunt, thanks for sharing. Congrats to your buddy.

Pleasure! I haven't posted a whole lot on the site recently, and I know how much the crowd likes a story and pics!

Looks like a tough hunt and a well earned deer. Congrats to your friend. Thanks for posting pictures

awesome job mike did you guys see any elk though?

awesome job mike did you guys see any elk though?
Thanks!!! Funny that you asked Andrew, on all my previous scouting trips, I'd ONLY seen elk! (Lots of them too!) Only saw 2 other mulies on those trips, but this time we were after mulies and thats all we saw! lol we were in a different area though so that's it. I got two full days of scouting for my tag before opening morning so I'm hoping that I can find my bull in a deep dark canyon somewhere prior and kill hiim opening day... ;)

id think youd hope to find him on a ridgetop that way you dont have to kill yourself packin him out
-
Thats the hope! lol but there's still lots of tag holders out there looking for a big bull and more on the way... so hopefully I find him in an easy to pack spot where he won't get pushed out! ;) Thats the idea anyways!

congrats to him

Thats sure some beautiful contry shown in your pictures. It;s a good thing you guys are in such good shape that pack had to be quite a job. Nice buck.
-
Ok Bill M:
Next time I see a nice buck at 800 yds I will just start lobbing shots at him.
I have many, many hours and practiced and trained in the military and my job at long distance shooting so guess it is ok.
I 've shot in 1,000 yd matches and did quite well. Can hit a 20 inch circle 4 out of 5 times.
At 300 yds 5 out of 5 every time no question so that is my personal limit but for me personally more important stalking and hunting skills and gettting close to game.
When I find a lot of gut and leg shot dead animals after hunting season I guess it will not up set me anymore
Not about quick humane kill, but about the racks for some people
Everyone has a different reason for hunting
-
"Not trying to be an a-hole and will probably get reamed for saying this:"

This is an open forum, if someone posts about a long shot, and another member feels it isn't ethical to shoot that far, they have every right to say so. As long as it is done in good form... and I feel that Ribka meet that criteria. He is simply voicing his opinion (which I happen to agree with 100%)
-
I guess I should put a disclaimer:
80% of the deer/elk/bear/cariboo I have shot have been with a bow. All shots under 30 yds. The majority under 20 yds. The ml buck I shot this year was less than 30 yds.
Maybe that is why I do not understand the 500-800 yds shots at game.
I enjoy the challenge of getting close to game -I should not berate people for taking ultra-long shots at game
-
"Not trying to be an a-hole and will probably get reamed for saying this:"
then don't.
Hey, people are allowed to disagree... I took the chance of getting reamed for posting the shot info...
Ok Bill M:

Are you saying that this hunt was about the rack and not a quick humane kill?
Michael
-
Quick, humane kill? Four shots to put him down. Nothing quick or humane about that. He can hit a steel plate 10 times out of 10 @ 700 yards. So why did it take four shots? A deer isn't a steel plate. If you can't put the first shot in the kill zone, (and he couldn't) then you are shooting beyond your effective range. Now you are shooting at an animal that is alarmed at the least. Or wounded and running. Poor judgement plain and simple. Just my opinion. I am glad that he ended up getting the deer on the ground, and didn't let it get away wounded.
-
Do not want to start a controversy and take away from the guy taking a nice buck.
Just my opinion that a shot over 5oo yds at a deer sized game is too long for 99/100 people and if you do not take the animal down with one shot it is not a quick clean kill. If a guy writes on this forum he shot an elk deer at 600 yds I am not impressed. If he wrote that he stalked and shot at less than 50 yds then am impressed. Anyone can get within 500 yds of an animal.
As I said in my post more than once there is a group of hunters that think taking ultra-longe shots at large game is ok with bow, ml and archery. I do not agree and that is my point. I have 30 plus year hunting/shooting in many countries in the world plus a good deal of military training and am a firearms instructor. When you start taking shots over 350 yds in a non-controlled environment sh$% does go wrong like in this story of shooting and wounding this buck. I personally would not take the chance and wound an animal and I have a lot more real life experience than the most guys..
I have no problem with 500 plus shots at coyote, praire dogs because a hit that range will knock down and kill the animal
There is also a safety issue. Cannot be sure of you backstop when shooting at game over 500 yds. I have been out hunting during modern firearms too many times when I have personally had guys shooting at over 500 yds at elk and deer and had bullets whizzing by my head because they did not see me.
Can guarantee this year will find at least a dozen dead deer and elk in my area that were were wounded and never found
Again just my opinion and might be wrong:twocents:
-
If you have a problem with the shot, thats your problem... If you're bringing up a safety issue with this shot, then imho you're just looking for stuff to harp on... I don't believe thats what you're trying to say, but if you think we might have been shooting near another hunting in this situation, then thats rediculous. Just my opinion though...
Just curious how some people here think 40 yard shots with a long bow is ethical, even with a second follow up shot... I guess it all comes down to who is posting the story...
Michael
-
It has nothing to do with who is posting the story. I don't know you from dirt. It has to do with shooting beyond your capabilities. One miss, then two wounding shots before finally getting a kill shot? That is not good form, it is, in my opinion, bad ethic's. You opened yourself up to this scrutiny by bragging about the distance that this "great marksman" shot. And shot. And shot. And shot. BTW, spell check works just fine on this site. ;)
-
Fair enough... and yeah being relatively new to the site you wouldn't know what I'm talking about...
BTW if you'd like to give me a lesson on grammer I'm done with classes at 330 on tuesday/thursdays and by 230 on MWF... Pm me if you'd like my phone number...
Michael
-
I'll say one last thing then quit posting in my own thread and I'll let ya'll hash out the details of how else we were unethical...
If you have a problem with the shot, then voice you're opinion... The fact that people bring up how we could've possibly been shooting at another hunter in this situation, and to also bring up spell check for my posts shows me that people here are too damn nitpicky (thats a personal first for me and I've been on this site since its inception)... I have no problem with the hunt, I've never lost a big game animal on any persons hunt that I've been involved with... There are people here that have hunted with me and can vouch for my ethics, but I'd rather they leave you with your opinion of me...
Enjoy the pics/story I posted if you can...
Michael
PS: I hope everybody out there only carries one bullet, cause if you need a second one you're an unethical hunter!!!

Wow you guys are lame! :hello:
This guy tells a story about a awesome hunting trip he just got back from and you ruin it with this drama? MJ, Im quite sure has thick skin and really doesnt give a rats ass about your opinion. There are plenty of threads on this forum that already exist talking about long range shots. Go open one of those threads up and wine about it there. Meanwhile the buck is dead the story is awesome and you two need to STFU! :violent1:
-
Michael....I enjoyed your story. I think too many guys on this forum are just looking for things to gripe about. Doesn't matter what you post I guarantee someone will find fault.
It sounds like your buddy is more qualified for taking the shot he took than many others are qualified to take 100 yard shots. I commend you guys for following through and finishing the job. Some of the guys missing or wounding multiple times at 100 or 200 yards just walk away.
I think it takes special skill to make long range shots and it also takes special skill to get in close. With that said, I find it disappointing that some will ridicule the other for not doing it their way. I have on occasion misssed bucks at less than 100 yards for no other reason than being over confident and not feeling challenged. On other occasions I have dropped animals in excess of 500 yds with one shot. If someone wants to ridicule me now , well go ahead, it will take the heat off of Michael.... :)
-
Thats some awsome looking country. Nice buck,Congrats to the hunter!
-
Thanks for the compliments guys... We'll be sure to edit out the play by play action on my elk hunt if it gets posted at all... rather keep it to myself and let my friends and family enjoy it then let a couple of *censored*es behind a keyboard tell me how I didn't impress them because I didn't sneak close enough or how I did it all wrong... Or how I posted the hunt on here trying to brag and build my self esteem instead of realizing that I posted it here for the enjoyment of everybody...
For crying out loud I went over EVERY post of mine and had maybe 5 mis-spelled words and you guys are bitching about spell check? Give me a friggen break...
Somebody mentioned it wasn't a good shot because we were humping up/down hills all day.... you gotta be kidding me right? This wasn't a run to the top of the ridge and shoot as the buck is running away... we accidently busted some does on our stalk and I told Al to get ready for the buck to stand up somewhere which he did...
BTW the reason he shot bad on the first two, is because he'd already clicked up his elevation for 300 yard zero from the first stalk on the buck and doubled the damn mil adjustment thus making the first two shots on the wrong cross hairs... Add a little bit of excitement and you get a miss, but hey it happens right? That was the first two shots... Oh ya, the shot at 648 yards???? Through the top of the left lung (after he realized his mistake on the mils from the first two shots), the buck was dead on his feet, but when he walked out at 415 yards he finished him off... Cause we wanted a quick humane kill. Hell we even packed out rib/neck meat from all the way down there... if you'd like I got GPS coordinates you can check it out...
Ribka: "I guess the reason I posted is because I see a lot of guys bragging on here taking 500 yds plus shots on elk, deer. 75 yds plus archery shots, 200 yds shots with ml's ( open sights) etc."
If you so feel the need to educate everybody on the forum about how they shouldn't take long range shots, go start you're own damn thread...
Ribka: "When I find a lot of gut and leg shot dead animals after hunting season I guess it will not up set me anymore"
How the hell do you know these dead deer were shot at over a certain range?? Were you there, did you shoot the deer from 50 yards with a paintball gun so you could find it later and say "Ha! Told you people shouldn't be shooting at deer from over 300 yards!" Give me a break.... could've easily been some slob hunter who didn't bother to sight his gun in before the season, or the buck fever sick kid who was out there with his dads 30-30 and didn't want to go look for the buck again...
Ribka: "80% of the deer/elk/bear/cariboo I have shot have been with a bow. All shots under 30 yds. The majority under 20 yds. The ml buck I shot this year was less than 30 yds.
Maybe that is why I do not understand the 500-800 yds shots at game."
--Nobody cares what you do or don't understand. I haven't seen a post from you about any of your hunts for us to enjoy, I haven't seen you give advice to anybody on any gear choices or hunting areas... Start contributing to the site instead of making an ass of yourself. I only posted the hunt for people to enjoy...
Ribka: "If a guy writes on this forum he shot an elk deer at 600 yds I am not impressed. If he wrote that he stalked and shot at less than 50 yds then am impressed."
Once again, nobody cares what you think, and I'm sure nobody posts a story on here to impress you...
Ribka: "I have been out hunting during modern firearms too many times when I have personally had guys shooting at over 500 yds at elk and deer and had bullets whizzing by my head because they did not see me."
You've got to be kidding right? This can happen JUST as easily at 100 yards as it can at 500 yards... Thats a BS argument and you know it...
I've felt I've been more than reasonable and have agreed that everybody has a right to their opinion and to voice it on a public forum... I said I agreed I opened myself up to the scrutiny by posting the story, I figured it was worth it for the enjoyment of some on this site... This site is getting almost as bad as MM and will continue to get worse imho. I'll say this is the first time I've let something somebody has said on this site get to me... First time I've really lost my temper on here, kinda pathetic of myself imho.
Oh well I had a helluva hunt, made some great memories, got to help out a good friend fulfill his idea of a dreamhunt, and get to head back and try to knock down a bull this weekend... Best of luck to everybody else...
Michael

michael don't let it get to you.....just ignore the gripers....sometimes I let it rile me up too and i shouldn't... :chuckle:
I should be in bed but thought i would see what has been happening on here the last few days. First thing I noticed was a bunch of griping....I for one think you should feel free to tell your elk story the way it happens and just ignore the hard core gripes. There are plenty of us who will want to hear the whole story.
You probably have noticed i rarely take time to use spell check myself. I figure it 's a hunting forum not a letter to the president.... :chuckle:
Good luck on your elk.....
-
congrats to you Michael ;) get use to it on here, lotta jealous people, envy maybe I dunno pretty weird tho.
Good luck to you on your elk :)
-
Nice to see you in Idaho Mike. Love that place. Nice follow up shots. Can you post that picture of yourself giving RIBKA a BA at 301 yards? Must be real frustrating for him not to be able to take a shot over 300 yards.

:cryriver:So we can't voice our opinion? Other than the spellcheck comment (which didn't need to be said, my bad and I apologize for that) there was no name calling (until this post). Just a couple guys calling it like we see it. MichaelJ said himself that he knew he might get reamed for posting the distance of the shots. He did. The ethics involved in long range shooting can be a very touchy subject. Some disagreement on the subject should be expected. You disagree with my personal ethics? Fine. But no, I will not STFU.

Love It MichaelJ!!!!

I like hunt wa site a lot. It is a forum and I think a forum means you can express your opinion. Served 8 years in the military and fought in 2 wars and have a permant injury because of my service. I think this gives me and others the right to express our opinions here.
Am not jealous. Have over 100 posts on Hunt WA and this is the first time I offered critism other than griping about Obama, poaching and ATV's in restricted areas.
Check my posts always the first to say nice deer to a guy that posts. I helped 6 guys on this site this year with deer and elk hunting info in my area. (I took 2 to some of favorite upland areas). I think it would be great if they shot a bigger buck than I did this year. I could care less how big the rack is on my deer is as long as it is legal. 30 years of hunting in US, Canada, Europe, Russia, Kazakhstan, no place to put all of my racks.
Being a firearms Instructor for 15 years teaching law enforcement how to shoot and going through the Army's long distance shooting school where the wash-out rate was 60% and shooting competively at long distances in the military ( 1,000 yds with open sights) with some of the best shots in the world I guess would not prepare me for a 300 yd shot with a 15 power scope. :bash:
I practice out to 800 yds but would not personally shoot beyong 350yds
An outfitter on here recently posted that he had a client, with unknown shooting ability, shoot a box of shells ( 20 rounds) at an elk around 500 yds and missed every time. I do not agree with that type of hunting ethic and it is my opinion based many years of some of the best firearms training that shots over 500 yds are not good for most people

In this country we all have a right to express our opinion regardless of Military or Police service. But our freedom of speech doesn't give us the right to trigger a riot. In my opinion, your opinion crossed that line. Mike's not the one puffing out his chest bragging about taking long shots. They took a calculated long shot, somebody else took the "Potshot".

I think that Michael was just trying to tell a story about a hunt and an experience that they put a lot of effort into, I felt bad for him when I saw guys starting to slam them, sometimes it's easy to let the forum mentality take over and we forget that we are all humans. I know that I would have felt frustrated about some of the comments that I read on this topic. Glad to see that there is support for him to tell his story, I for one look forward to hearing an elk story from him.
Yes, we thankfully still have the right to express ourselves in most any fashion we wish, at least until someone decides that it should be outlawed. :chuckle:
Go get em Michael.....

Nice job Michael. Good luck on your elk hunt. If you get too far down in there just take it down to the river and have a boat come pick you up. There are tons of fishing guides that will do it. Heck, you could find a guy like Ramslam that lives there and has a boat to come help you pick up your 350"+ bull for a case of beer or soemthing. Just make sure you don't come down to the river above the slide on the Salmon... That's a biatch to get up and down...
I helped a kid and his father about 12 years ago bag about a 350 bull in there. There are a lot of bulls not in the timber and in the thick brush. Your going to have a good time.
-
Thanks for the comments guys, I guess the sites getting big enough ya gotta start ignoring the trolls huh? ;)

And I'm the one trying to brag about long shots?? I thank you for your service to my country and you get my automatic respect for that... But once again, whos the person trying to puff their chest out over the internet??
Pope, Thanks man! I'm going to be doing just that this week... gonna try to get some phone numbers of possibilities cause it's quite likely I'll be down in another hell hole. I've been scouting quite a bit and have the most confidence in this hunt compared to any other I've been on. But its still hunting! I'll keep ya'll updated when I can.
Once again thanks to the rest of you guys! Sorry bout losin my temper, like I said thats a first for me and it'll be the last... No worries my elk hunt will be posted even if I dont score. Once again I know how much you guys like a good huntin story, I'm just praying I'm lucky enough to get one on the ground! ;) And some of you maybe gettin a call to come help me pack! haha

Hey Mike. Just got a call from a friend sitting at the top of the Chelan Range watching three deer bedded down in the bottom of the basins below that place that you and Zane walked up to a few times. I think you know the spot. One four and a three. The third buck he can't get an I.D. on. He has them ranged at 300 yards, straight down. So we can all agree that this is a takable shot. Just lost contact with him and his last words were. "Hang on I just spotted another buck".

great story and pics.....thanks for sharing.

Thats AWESOME! I sure miss that area, and I would've been back there this year had I not gotten my ID residency... I tried like hell to convince my brother to head up there for the opener and hike in the night before and sit on the far ridge before light but he leaves today with his wife for their vacation and he was too busy all weekend. That and I think he really enjoys going out with me because he's only hunted for a year and likes to have someone around with a touch more experience... I'll send zane a few pics of this buck, tell you're buddy good luck and I hope he nails a monster out of there!!!

For crying out loud I went over EVERY post of mine and had maybe 5 mis-spelled words and you guys are bitching about spell check? Give me a friggen break...
Michael
If you still went to CWU you wouldn't have that problem :chuckle:
-
Haven't heard back from Ken yet since we lost reception. Actually a little concerned right now. I'd just asked him to peek over the edge of the cliff he was spotting from and glass into the dark timber at the base of the cliff straight down. He said he was trying to do that but it was kind of scary. Then he said he sees another buck and click, no more contact. Tried calling back after awhile but only get that "Trying to locate subscriber". I'm hoping we just lost reception, or the phone fell. If I don't hear back in a few hours I will make the 3 hour drive to where his truck is parked.

I hear ya there Dan, I'll say a quick prayer for you're buddy, I'm sure he's okay though. You know all the things that'll keep you off the phone when hunting that country alone! Sure wish I was up there right now!!!

I enjoyed your hunting story and your pictures sorry you had to defend it. I hope you get the biggest elk in all of Idaho and tell the story the way it happened thats what I enjoy not the I would have done it this way or that it;s your hunt and needs to be your story and the pack out you made sure looks like you earned it to me.
-
Thanks for the words buckhorn, its appreciated... I'll be sure to keep ya'll updated on my elk hunt!
Michael
BTW, I hope I get the biggest one too! lol

Sorry but I don't buy it!! If your buddy can put ten shots under 5" at 700yrds, tell him to come on up to one of our benchrest matches at 600yrds and I'll bet you and him that he wont do it consistently!, I shoot 1,000 yrds and 600 yrds matches all the time and it is very hard even with a $3,000 Bench Gun to do what your stating, You must have a no wind at ALL!!! to acomplish this, I have put 10 shots at 600yrds under 5" but it is very HARD!! and I shoot a lot.

Thanks for the story Michael. I enjoyed it.

Nice job Mike, thanks for posting up.

Before anyone starts, its not required to wear blaze orange in Idaho.
They will find something else to bitch about any way. orange or not.
Dandy buck and great shot.
-
Look at it this way MJ, nobody is bitching about the lack of blaze orange, :chuckle: guess I should have said something about the long distance shooting. ;)
Give it a rest guys, you have made your points and its time to move on. Start your own thread about long shots if you wish.
Once again great write-up and nice buck MJ.

They'll be in Wenatchee this next year for a shooting competition I'm pretty sure... I know his boss has a custom gun that will group 1.5" at 600 yards... Al's been trying to get him to enter a few comps with the gun because he should be able to set some records... If you don't buy it that's your deal... Cause I'm not trying to sell anything.
Thanks for the compliments guys! Looks like I'll have a few people to call to help pack this sunday but for the most part I'll be hunting solo (couple surprise funerals got my buddies occupied this weekend) so I'm pretty much guaranteed to shoot something in a hell hole! lol

Hey Mike. You forgot to mention that your friends barrels were $3000 dollars and he burns one out weekly. That explosion bonded Rhuthinium Oxide to Titinium technology from Sweden is still not available to the general public so I think you better back down because if you win the match you'll then be called a sandbagger, dirty rotten, pool hall hustler. Then you'll have to bust out the poolstick to collect and end up in the Wenatchee slammer. Not worth it.

You must be Joking!! I run 600yrds Matches at Paul Bunyan Club and the record there for the past 6yrs is 2" ten shots by Billy Copellin and that was done one time with no wind. My buddy in Montana has a 1000yrd Record of 3.5" also one time in years of shooting and a Custom heavy barrel $3,000.00 Gun!!...Now try to convince me that you can do that with a Hunting rifle!!.. Bench guns are heavy and have heavy barrels, Custom Jewell Triggers and Custom Actions, Scopes, Stocks etc... come on up to Eatonville and lets put some money on the table if you or your buddy can put ten shots under 2", My hands are getting itchy.

My friend those barrels are S@#T, I'll put a Lilja,Shilen against that crap anytime. You talking to someone who has been shooting Benchrest competition for years and I know what I'm talking about. He burns a barrel weekly?? shows what crap that barrel is, and please don't tell me he shoots thousands of rounds a day. Like I said I dont buy it.
