Title: High country Muley
Post by: actionshooter on October 19, 2009, 10:11:46 PM
On the Friday before the opener, I was planning on backpacking into an area I have scouted in the past, setting up a spike camp a couple miles in, and then hunting in farther. Well if anyone was in central Wa this weekend, you know what the weather was like  :chuckle:
I started in 8" of snow at 6800' and it was raining Friday night soooo, I pussed out and set up my camp at a trail head and decided to hunt a little closer to the truck. The weather was horrible, snow, rain, major wind, some more rain, about right for hunting, but not what I wanted to deal with a couple of nights in a tarp.
Anyway I hunted of the trail in the morning, climbed a ridge or two through the day and then hit the timber for the afternoon. I lucked onto a ridge that was obviously being crossed by a large number of deer, so I planted my butt and just waited  ;)
About 45 minutes later, this guy and another about the same size crossed about 80 yards in front of me, 1 shot and I had a hell of a pack in front of me.   :IBCOOL:
I gutted him and had left my camera in camp  :bash:, It was getting close to dark anyway, so the pics were taken the next morning when my brother helped me pack him out.
He was starting to rut a bit and is the largest bodied deer I have ever killed, by far.
He's a touch over 24" wide, 4x4 with a little cheater on one side. He's weak in the back, but I wasn't gonna pass him up  ;)
I can't remember the last time I killed a buck on opening day, its kinda bitter/sweet.

 Thanks guys!

Way to get it done. Nice Buck. No pack goats on this trip?
I wanted to take them but was a little worried that the snow might be to deep. They get belly drag a little faster than the horses do in  the white stuff.
