We didnt have the best opener weve ever had. OK, it was terrible. We tried a new spot and it sucked. We finished the day with around 20 birds, a mix of Mallard, Teal, Widgeon, Pintail, and I got a little something special. We had tons of Woodies bombing all around us but after shooting this one we decided not to shoot any more of them. Well go back in a few weeks when they are more colored up!

Doesn't sound like a rough opener...buncha ducks and a early Woodie.
Would love to mount one of those...and by that I mean Taxidermy.
Congrats on the Wood Duck.
-

does anyone want to take me and elliott out to try for a wood duck? the bragging rights i would have over my dad would be amazing after he missed 3 shots at one that was 25 yards away a couple of years back :chuckle:
seriously though id be willing to trade a hunt somewhere else. i know some decent spots for mallards with the possiability of canadians

Never killed a wood duck, but I don't think they are too hard to find :dunno:. Lots of places to jump shoot them.

-
What kind of area where you hunting? Timbered sloughs and ponds should have a some wood in em'.
-
usually small ponds, ditches, and rivers. the one my dad shot at was on the river but thats the only one i have ever seen
-
I know of some about 10 minutes out of town for me. I also know quite a few holes out in the potholes area with them. We usually take a few every year in the early season :)
-
good looking bird

I know where youre talking about ten minutes outside town.

nice duck, I know the yakima has hundreds of them. I cant even remember how many of those little suckers I have killed. I know this they dont taste very good. I may try and get some more now that I would like to fill my house with mounts. Back then I hardly have enough money to buy shells let alone get duck mounts done. Congrats though I know they can be hard to find.
-
great job! I missed a opprotunity to shoot at a redhead last season :(

i used to be head over heels for the wood ducks, and I'd still like to get one mounted, but they aren't my favorite duck anymore after learning about Old Squaws and Harlequins.

For those that are looking for a woodie, I can get you on them as I know that spot Knuckles goes to but won't take you there.

Killer Redhead and amongst the basalt...Classic. Only here in WA.
Looks like a monster under that bear skin...better shoot it twice

ended that streak today :IBCOOL: :rockin: i also took part in bringing down a hen pintail.... though we should have had all of them a flock of 4 or 5 were circling our decoys and responding super well to our calls, but 3 of us unloaded and only brought down 1 :dunno: :bash: wish it was a drake though oh well
-
I didn't hunt this weekend and i'm regretting it!!
that redhead would make a great mount!
-
Saw a dandy drake woody today that landed in the decoys. It sat there talking to the decoys for a while and the dog was freaking out because I decided not to shoot it. Don't know what got into me today. I enjoyed watching it swimming around carrying on a conversation with every decoy and let it swim off. :dunno:
-
i love talking with the birds when they are circling the dekes, it really helps my patients and my calling

when my brother and I saw our first wood ducks on the west side (pierce county) we opted against shooting them. we had waited for years and finally found what appeared to be a breeding pair. opted to let them continue to do their thang. Nothing wrong with good conservation ;)
-
I shot one several years ago in Enumclaw, I got it mounted and it sits in my den, cool looking birds
-
knock on wood, if I get another chance I'll likely take a good drake. since Al Gore invented the internets I've found that there are far more wood ducks in Washington than I thought at the time.
-
I seen around 50 of em this weekend. Didn't have any shots but i found a new honey hole for em. Managed 7 teal saturday and 2 teal and a wigeon sunday in this spot.
Nice looking redhead. We always shoot a few every year, can't wait for this year. I got the diver fever already!!
-
There are a lot of woodies in Washington. I have been building wood duck boxes for a long time. If you see wood ducks in the area, you should all take some time and build a few boxes. The hens will usually lay 9-15 eggs in a batch. A good way to boost the population along with giving you some opportunities at some great drakes. I have been able to shoot a lot of them over the years, but this last time was able to enjoy watching them. If you need plans or would like to build some, let me know. I will post them.
-
h20 post the plans. Most hunters are conservationists first. Wood duck boxes benefit lots of animals not just wood ducks. I have never hunted a duck but may someday with my son. We have built and put up between 50 and 75 boxes just because we can. We usually build them in the winter when the weather is too wet or dark to be outside. We have even put some up with one of the cubscout packs a few years back. You never know when you will benefit from a good deed.
-
Post the plans if you would. I have a hidey hole with a few that I would like to increase there numbers in.
-
If this doesn't work I will try some other options.

I had printed out that exact page a while back and lost it, thanks for posting. maybe I'll whip up a couple boxes this winter. would be easy enough to put up in a couple places in King County and Pierce that I duck hunt.
