I don't think it matters the shape and size of the little brass case that holds the powder that burns. As long as it sends out that little piece of lead and hits the target, that's all that matters. To me, this question is a fun one but one where we don't learn a lot. I worry less about the size and shape of the powder holder and more about the object that actually makes contact with the animal. Bullet design is 95% of it, in my opinion. :dunno:

Young man (grandson), Old man (me); use MarlinŽ Mdl 336C in 30/30. Son uses WinchesterŽ Mdl 94 in 7-30 Waters. We hunt the west side for Blacktail.

Good Luck with that!! It ALWAYS turns into a debate.

I used my .243. Killed my 13th deer with the rifle and it has yet to fail me. 100 Grain Core Locked Spire Point bullet.
I've never understood why people shoot a .300 RUM or .340 Wthby at 100 pound deer?? Do you not enjoy venison?? Everything that I have ever seen that wasn't hit perfectly behind the shoulder when perfectly broadside, there was one hell of a mess. I understand the theory of not wanting your animal to run off in thick brush and trying to drop it in it's tracks but a well placed shot with a smaller caliber can accomplish it. :twocents: Not bashing you big bore guys but I just don't get it..

i think it is pretty awesome that a .340 weatherby was used! way to hammer down! being overgunned is not necessary at all... but it sure is fun! :P

I guess it's fun if you enjoy making hamburger out of both front shoulders upon impact. Nothing like cutting 50 pounds of meat off your deer and leaving it in the woods because it looks like it's been through a blender. Not my idea of fun.
-
7mm, 150 grain ballistic tip.

who says you need to shoot the deer through the shoulders? through the ribs behind the shouldr would be suffucient... to each their own. big gum or little gun, the deer is dead meat, and tastey :hello:
-
7mm-08 140gr core-lockt
-
.308 for me, this is my first season with the Winchester Supreme Ballistic Tip 168gr. They don't publish a drop chart for over 300 yards if sighted in at 100, but man does it spall once it hits.

ive seen worse damage from small caliber rounds than some large caliber rounds all depends on exact bullet placement and how big of a chunk of bone you hit

I know this is for the successful rifle hunters, but if I were to rifle hunt again, I would use my Browning A-Bolt in 25-06 shooting Federal 100 grain Nosler ballistic tips. My buddy used it last year to fill his antlerless tag in GMU 130. Nice little 25 cal hole going in, significantly lafger hole coming out. That was an easy blood trail.
-
7mm-08 with 140 grain berger in ID and WA and 300 RUM with 200 grain partition in NV. Both work, one just better. I take the 7mm-08 into the steep country since it is a ultra light. Will be going to MT in 3 weeks and will use 300 RUM with 185 berger.
-
30.06 180 grain corelock
-
.300 winny with 180 gr. Accubonds
-
7MM mag. Remington 700. Nosler 150 gr. partition.
