Heading out in a few hours for 9 days in Idaho's famed unit 45. Dreams of hog mule deer have been dancing through my dreams the last few nights..........I don't think it will really hit me until I am glassing from a knob at first light tomorrow morning! I will return with plenty of pictures, and hopefully - Muley Grande!
-
-
Good luck, hope you tag a monster!
-
good luck, I hope you get a monster.
-
Let us know if you need the kubota to get the deer out... :chuckle: hope its a biggun! Good Luck.. :)
-
I smell a brute in the forecast!
-

Will you road it down there for me? Might take a few days! :chuckle:
-
Tough conditions on day one....really windy, had the deer hunkered down. Passed a nice 170 buck at 120 yards. He was pushing does which is a good sign. 7 more days....
-

On my way JJhunter..has to hot wire the kubota..I am in colfax....gotta get diesal...LOL :chuckle:
-
My law school buddy has a farm in unit 45 and we use to go down there and look at big mulies in unit 45. I would see 180+ mulies. Good luck and remember, I think the rule is if they don't post it, they can't complain that you trespassed... :chuckle:
-
Good luck man! Can't wait to see the post and read the story!!
-
yea the wind was horrible today, good luck jj, give me a call when you tip over a hog i wanna see this thing in person
-
I was pumped when I saw a WA member drew this tag. I can't wait to see what you pull out of there. Have a great hunt and good luck. Take lots of pics and thanks for the update.
-
no update yet tonight i better keep my cell close in case he calls, might be a bbd
-
Good luck to you, hope to see some awesome pic's soon!!
-
Great day. 195 plus buck passed at first light! Three bucks over 180". Intense buck fight, full lip curl, awesome!
-
dang passed a 195 was that typical or non typ?
-
Looking for that 190 plus typical! Best place I have ever hunted mule deer!
-
you've got some set of stones passing a 195" buck...good luck, i can't wait to see the results of this hunt.
-
Nt. Sweet bucks, I took pics through the 15's.
-
WOW! Passing on a 195" would be impossible for me in Idaho! No doubt in my mind that you know what you're looking for! :hunter:
-
Go big or go home I guess. Hope you nail a monster!
-
195 is big I think he is going HUGE.. Good luck.
I want to hunt someplace were I can have a 195" " Last day buck "
-
Sounds like your into the big boys! Stick to your guns and go big!!!
-
195 buck passed??? This man needs help :chuckle:
-
There are only a couple bucks every year killed in 45 over 195+. And those couple have already been shot this year. Go find the 195 and kill him.
-
possible ground shrinkage 195 is huge .
-

Wow. :yike: Can't fathom that. Can't wait to see what you come home with...
-
Looking at jj's success this year, I can't question his actions! :)
-

to kinda help get his motives across he is looking for a 190 or better typical, guess this buck was non typical so no go
-
I like this man's style: sticking to his guns! Get the Big Un JJ

There is even less 190 typicals killed in 45 every year. The big bucks that come out of it are usually nontypicals. But if 190 typical is what he wants, there is a chance in 45. Its a small chance but still a chance. I hope he does kill a 190+.
-
yea that is true most of the big bucks are non typicals out there, but jjhunter seems pretty set on a 190+ typical, i know im pullin for him, but if he ends up takin a 190+ non typ on the last day ill still be glad to see it
-
:yike: Thats crazy you passed a 195 NT.Good luck getting that 190+ Typ.
-
Day three....starting to question my sanity....180 plus buck early, 28". Lots of 160-170. No big boy, yet. 5 days left.
-
I don't know you from Adam but are you sure you know what a 170 buck looks like. I have spent some time there and never have seen lots of 170 class bucks. If you said lots of 150's I would say thats about right but lots of 170's anywhere in todays Idaho I don't know. If your right I would say keep your mouth shut and hope you get drawn again soon. You have found a honey hole.
I am hoping to see you holding a 30 plus perfect typical soon!
-
There are two sayings that I like....
If you want to be a successful hunter, then kill on the first day what you would kill on the last day.
If you are a trophy hunter you don't kill trophies by shooting smaller deer.
This guy knows what he wants and is sticking to it, I respect that.

I like these quotes, and from the sounds of it, JJ is a trophy hunter and is sticking to his guns.

Stick with it JJ, It'll be a long time before that tag is in your hands. Keep at man!!

good spring and summer vegetation equals good horn growth this year, hes hunting probably the best unit in all of idaho, in one of the best horn growth years in a long time and jjhunter has killed some big bucks already he knows what hes doin
-
Terry Croen killed a 203" typical out of that unit a few years back. I say stick with your goal, it gets better as it gets closer to the rut. This has been a good year for horn growth across the west.
-
Heading out for day 4. I am in a really good couple of canyon. About the only place you can't get a 4 Wheeler. I am the only only guy without one, so, I am the only one hoofing it all day. Seen one other guy that was pretty legit. No one else is packing good glass. I am putting on about 10 miles a day and spending hours behind tripod mounted 15's. Saw about 30 bucks yesterday. Heading lower today, we'll see......
-
I like your style of hunting jj , go giver hell . someone i'm sure is gonna call you a lucky sob. Sorry for suspecting your judgment with the ground shrinkage comment , you seem to have your *censored* together good luck . Coach
-
i got a text message yesterday with a pic of a monster that said possible new idaho state record killed in unit 45. the text was from a friend, who's friends with a guy that knows the shooter. The shooter apparently is from bonners ferry. i don't know how to post pics from a cell phone, but if someone that knows wants to pm their cell number i'll text it to them and they can post it
-
JS, send it to your e-mail, then you should be able to post it.
-
Is this the buck stamp? I have heard that this is the new state record muzzy buck. Scored 266. Shot in 45.
-

I have spent time in there and have seen plenty of bucks over 180. Most were on private ground but hey. Keep your mouth shut honey hole? Unit 45 isn't a secret. It's the best late Idaho hunt there is. Some of my friends got huge bucks out of there. 15 years ago it was a bit of a decent draw with a muzzleloader. Now it's a long shot any year.
-
im pretty sure the guy that killed that buck was a local not from bonners ferry but that is the new state record for muzzy, or would be but i think i heard the hunter doesnt want to strip the velvet so it will not be able to be officially scored
-
I believe the guys name is Dalles Smith not sure. Him and I think his older brother always seem to get 45 tags.
-
yea i think youre right bigshooter seems this was his 3rd 200+ buck in 3 yrs out of 45, think they are getting landowner tags
-

How do they get landowner tags?
-
i dont know exactly just a rumor i heard i believe if you own enough land in most units you can get a landowner tag ill check the regs and get back to ya
-
Let me know.
-
Yes im interested too.
-
here you go straight from the regs
"Landowner Appreciation Permits: Owners of at least 640 acres in 1 hunt area that provides significant habitat for deer, elk, or pronghorn, may be eligible for a Landowner Appreciation Permit."

Not sure on that it goes on to say eligible landowners have to register their land and eligible applicants so im guessing that they could make you an eligible applicant for the right price, then you still have to draw but i bet they are way easier to draw than the regular draws
-
heres a little more info i found on the IDFG website
http://fishandgame.idaho.gov/cms/hunt/misc/LAP.pdf
-
thats the buck bigshooter. i figured it was killed in archery season, or muzzle loader, with the velvet and all. a stud none the less
-
Only 13 permits for 45.. probably not worth buying a place on those odds :chuckle:
-
plus 24 muzzleloader permits :chuckle: there are almost as many landowner tags as there are for the general public
-
Day 4 complete. After looking at a bunch of country and a ton of bucks, I may regret passing some of these deer! Hunted lower today. Less deer but good bucks. Had a big heavy horned deer at 100 yards, 175ish. Two bucks were aleady busted up. Heading back up to find the cheater buck tomorrow. I may take him If I can find him? If someone can post an email addess, I will send a picture and you can post. Not real clear- pic of pic, but you can get the idea. Thanks for the support, you guys are pushing me.
-
andrew12gauge@yahoo.com send it to me and ill post

Shawn,
I never said 45 was a secret. That wasn't even a secret in the 80's. I said if he had a couple of canyons that had a ton of 170 class bucks running around in it that I would keep my mouth shut and hope to get drawn again soon. A young buck with Unit 45 genetics that scores 170 will be a dandy when he is 5-7 years old. I still have my doubts that any canyon has a ton of 170 class bucks in it in this country but 45 is definitely a great unit to hunt. I have spent time in it myself and saw some dandy bucks but not a lot of 170 bucks running around. Definitely some and a few bigger but not under every bush.
-
Sent. Thanks Andrew.
-
Keep to your guns JJ! Give 'em hell and remember that hard work pays off and you make you're own luck! Don't let the Huntwa folks help you tag anything less than what you want.... Best of luck can't wait to see pics you still got a lot of time left!
Michael
-
allright well maybe im retarded with a computer but i cant figure out how to post those pics, when i try saving them it gets to about 40% and stops if i just hit open and save then my comp cant find them anybody else wanna try
-
GAG!!!! Thats a smoker buck... is that the 195 you passed??? Keep at it JJ!!!
Michael
-
Yeah, low 170's with 20 plus inches of trash. Hard to judge when trying to get pics, decide to shoot, etc.
-
Awesome buck keep up the good work!!! I love hearing stories about the unit, what a great place to hunt!!!
WACAT
PS. Sorry about not getting back to you regarding your PM, sounds like you got plenty of info.
-
Well, if that was me, that would have been a dead buck. Good for you. That takes some cajones to pass up that stud!
-

-
JJ, I believe you clank when you walk to pass on that buck! Congrats to sticking to your plan, though. Even if you end up with tag soup, at least you know you kept true to your dreams. Thump a STUD 195" typical! (Then find a cute young thing in a bikini to pose with it for us!).
-
:yike: :yike: :hunter: i would have shot it!
-
Looks like a good buck JJ. Take the one you want.
-
Nothing in nearly 2 days, JJ?.................Maybe something on your back......... :dunno:
-
Things have slowed down the last two days. Windy, cold, and lots of 4 wheelers! I think pressure has big bucks hiding out. Passed 178 buck yesterday, biggest today was 165. Heading back to honey hole tomorrow....last day.
-
Hope you shoot a big one. Sound like you have field scoring down to a T. When I field score the numbers end in "ish" and alwayhave a 0. 140 ish...150 ish :chuckle:
-
well jj im headin back up to 39 tomorrow for the last 2 days of deer and first 2 days of elk hope you get your buck man
-
Finish the job JJ, i look foreward to the pictures tomorrow afternoon. This was a really fun hunt to follow, its good to see someone really stick with their plan and not settle for less. Good luck!!!
-
Pulling for you jj, go get your trophy.
-

-
Wish I was there to help ya out! Good luck man... are you hunting solo or you with some buddies???
Michael
-
Its all over. After 7 days, I am physically exhausted. I have it everything I had, saw some beautiful country, passed some beautiful deer, and had a great time. Thanks for following, ill post pics when I get home.
-
Outstanding jj, hope you had a great time. Looking forward to the story and pics.
-
Successful Pictures?
-
Sounds like a great hunt, can't wait to see the pics and hear more of the stories.
-
Successful Pictures?
Well as of last night he hadn't tagged the big one and he posted with 5 hours of daylight left on the last day. Lets see, dropped one early this morning, took a couple hours to get it out, cleaned up, packed and then posted before the drive home. Just my guess of course but I doubt jj would be calling it quits with 5 hours to go with a 45 tag unless he got one :dunno:
-
Kinda what I'm thinkin too! ;)
-
Sorry to disappint boys, but tag soup for me. I will proudly display it in my photo album. Because of family business, I had to cut the hunt a little short. I will add more info and pics went I get home.
-
No disappointment here! Hunted your ass off for a huge typical trophy, and passed on bucks that most people will never see the size of. Enjoyed following your hunt. Thanks!
-
Can't wait to see the pics jj. For me anymore its just about getting out there and having fun. I am just as content packing my camera and capturing them on the hoof as putting them in the freezer. Glad you had a good time.
-
I enjoyed following along to jj. This was the first thread I checked when I logged on for the last week. Thanks for taking us with you, and congratulations working your butt off and making a memory that will last a lifetime.
-
to me.... passing up bucks and coming home empty handed is a sign of a guy who knows what he wants!!
congrats on getting to hunt some of the best deer around!
-
From the sounds of it you hunted that unit hard. You hunted in some of the best Mule Deer country in the west. You saw some good bucks and held out for the goal you set. If you enjoyed it and got your mind off the everyday routine stuff, I would say it was a hell of a successful trip.
It is easy to pull the trigger. Not so easy to lay off the trigger with a 195" buck in front of you.
-
Glad to hear you had a great time. Your a stud for holding out for the buck you know you wanted. hard thing to do.
PS- I hope my friends would kick me in the nuts for not shooting a 195 class buck. But the biggest I have ever killed is in the 140's, so little different scenario for me. :chuckle:
-
Oh, I am getting a lot of crap for it lol! At least I got pictures. Could have shot a 175ish buck on my way out this morning. Had him at 80 yards, but couldn't do it. He'll be a stud in a few years.
-
glad you enjoyed your hunt ,its not always about getting..I lived in 52 a for several yrs some pigs there also...
-
That's too bad man, enjoyed the read though!
-
i have really enjoyed reading your post, great hunt, one you won't soon forget. i respect the fact that you didn't compromise your principles when it got late in the hunt. you may have screwed up not shooting a buck that would score 195, only you can answer that and will have plenty of time to figure that out, but i think you would have more regrets if you felt that you just filled your tag. i have hunted in NM the last 5 year and have passed on many bulls over 300 for the same reason, bulls that i would shoot in a heartbeat here in WA but when you are seeing bulls that would score up to 390 just can't get myself to do it.
good job man, thanks for the daily updates
-
jjhunter too bad you didnt get your buck man i was really pullin for ya, way to stick to your guns though, although i think if it was me that 175 buck on the way out wouldve been goin for a ride with me
-
Finally back home - and it feels really good! Had a lot of time to think about the hunt on the 10 hour trip home by myself and I am still happy with passing some of those big deer. I wanted something really special and gigantic bucks are hard to find anywhere - even on limited entry, winter range, rut hunts :chuckle:. If I would have shot the biggest deer I saw, I would have been done on my first "real" hunt day and would have missed out on the following 5 days of hunting that were truly awesome.
I saw between 7 and 30 bucks per day. It was really streaky. I think that if you got into an area that had a couple hot does, the bucks would flock to that area. It was really tough to find a buck more than once, especially the big boys. I think they were travleling long distances.
The morning that I saw the 195ish deer, I saw about 20 4-points in the same area. It was insane. A big buck would have a doe and 5 or 6 bucks would just stand around watching but keeping a safe distance. The "satellite" bucks might include a couple 170 class deer! A few times, a big 'ol heavy regressive buck would have the doe and the nicer bucks would be standing by. I saw a 28" clab claw buck knock the hell out of a 26" 175" buck and then chase him in circles for about 10 minutes. It was definitely amazing stuff.
All in all, I saw 4 deer that would definitely eclipse the 180 mark - some gorgeous, black horned, heavy typicals that were really tough to pass. In fact, on day four we spotted two really nice 4's on a doe. I said, "look at that buck, what do you think it scores?'
He replied, "184." He said. "you need to kill that deer." I laughed and said, "I'm not killing that deer, not big enough." He called me crazy and said I was on my own for the rest of the hunt - and, I was :chuckle:.
I definitely should have taken more pics, but it is tough when you are really grinding. I tried to take advantage of every second of the day because I knew it would take time to find the deer that I wanted. I was also having trouble getting pics of deer in the shade - don't have the best camera set-up. Just a little cannon digital through the 15's. I did get some cool scenery pics on my buddies camera, though.
Here is a pic of the 4-point and a few of the big boy. I think he is fairly young and Dallas Smith's buck is a testament to what those deer can turn into with a extra couple of years on them. It is hard to tell in the pics, but this buck has six cheaters on him - he should be a huge buck some day.
Thanks for following this hunt - hope you got a fraction of the enjoyment that I did!
-
I'm impressed you had the stones to pass on that hog. I would have shot that S.O.B. without hesitation. Very nice.
-
Great write up on the hunt... Id have shot the big guy no question... but Im easily satisfied. :dunno:
-
Honestly I can see why you passed him... I would've rather shot the 184" typical... ;) Great hunt man you'll never forget it!
Michael
-
You are one lucky bugger to get to hunt such a place. Unit 45 is a dream of mine. I keep thinking about going down just to photograph a couple days. Insane man. Hope you had a great hunt!
-
JJ....question for your....do you have a wall full of 180+ bucks NT and typical???? Just curious. :yike:
-
JJ's nickname should be..................Juevos
