Title: What vintage scope?
Post by: GUHunter on October 23, 2009, 04:00:15 PM: I have my grandpa's Remington 721 in 30-06 that was made in 1950. It currently has a Bushnell Elite 3200 mounted on it (that I added). I am thinking that I want to put a scope on it from the same era as the rifle was made (1960s is ok). Doing a little preliminary research is pointing me towards maybe Redfield or Weaver. Any insight on makes and models as well as what to look for would be great. Thanks guys.

Personaly I dont care for the weaver scopes on a rifle thats going hunting, I prefer a leupold 3x9.

Ran into an old guy in Montana last year hunting by himself that was carrying a mod. 721. If I remember correctly he had owned it since new and had recently had it reblued and the stock redone. Something about sending it over to an antique furniture place in the Portland area and they stripped it and put it through a process that popped all the dents out of the wood. Can't remember exactly what that process was but it was pretty clever. Wish I'd listened closer. He then went on to refinish it with something like 21 coats of Linspeed or something.

Anyway, it was a beautiful rifle with a lot of history for that guy and sure impressed the heck out of me. Don't know why I didn't take a picture of it, wish now that I had.

Post by: JackOfAllTrades on December 01, 2009, 08:05:51 AM: Made in 1950, that 721 would have come with iron sights. If you really want it to look period, then put the irons back on it, then mount a Weaver or older Burris. I think the Leupold 2-7x30 was a 1970's scope.
