Dude, I wanted to see a monster buck, especially since there hasn't been any this year yet on the west side. But your right why would there be a monster buck from vail? How stupid of me to look!!

Heavy

Are you talking about that 7x8 blacktail? It was not taken in Vail, it was on private property about a mile from the gate off of Vail cutoof road

You got me to look. :bash: :chuckle: I don't doubt that there could be a monster back in there. But with less than a 5% success rate, I'm pretty sure that I'm never going to get him.

I make one trip to Vail every year. Usually just to check the havrvest stats. It looks like the quality and quantity is dropping every year.

Why don't you check the top black tails in the state and tell me where they come from?  could it be 667 skook bucks?

just having fun folks.my buddy went to the pumpkin patch(vail)  and was telling me about the crowds.same as always.  i  know there is a few big buck there i have done a little radio collar  work up there,  but the odds are terrible.  as for 667  producing  top bucks i am not sure where you are finding that knoxy.i would believe 667 produces more spikes than any unit.

A good friend of mine took a HUGE 3x3 out of vail on opening weekend.  Not much for a rack but the animal was one of the bigger deer i have ever seen.

There are some big bucks in Vail, it just gets hammered.  The Skook should be at least a 2 pt min gmu.

If I'm not mistaken, Vail is closed to public access all year (?).
How many people who take blacktail hunting seriously are going to go hunt somewhere that the only time they have to scout is during the three or four weekends that the place is open all year? I'm not saying it can't or isn't done, but I will say that pulling a big buck out of an area that only has access for four to eight days a year may be tough.

The big boys are in there...

I actually was watching that same Buck that I got last year for 3 years in a row... the first year he crossed the road right at dark and I had 2 cars behind me on my way out of the farm and I have 15 mins left to hunt... A guy screams and honks his horn... You son of a B*t** it's to late to shoot... I was so mad!! The next year he was chasing 6 does and a spike around a flat clear cut 1/8 of a mile away from were I seen him the previous year and couldnt get a good shot... Chased him for 8 hours that day!! So the next year (last year) I'm driving in the gate and 10 miles in at the 10 mile sign I see eyes cross the road into a large clearcut and I park right on the side of the road and wait until daylight... BUCK FEVER from hell though... lol Anyways day light comes around and I dont see him... I start walking in to the clearcut to a large stump to climb up on and sit and he jumps up and snorts and looks at me like he was going to attack... I aim and shoot... right in the neck and he drops... 1 shot .....1 kill .... oh yeah...

Well I'm going to Winston Creek this year for ELK... We have cow tags... Cant wait for a break away from work... Maybe we'll see you guys up there... Keep you all posted with pics and info!!

Vail is open year around for non-motorized access.  You could get a liitle ways back if you used a bike. Ive done it before and you would be amazed at how little people you end up seeing. (when the gates are closed) Just stay out of active logging areas, they're the only areas that they dont allow public access. :P
