Title: Swine Flu Sheep Trip
Post by: popeshawnpaul on October 24, 2009, 04:59:00 PM
Well, I've been down with the swine flu so nobody can get near me and I couldn't go deer hunting so I decided to cheer myself up and do the funest thing I could think of...take pictures of sheep.   ;)  Sorry, I couldn't get away from the car as I could only walk about 30 yards and I would be out of breath and felt like crap so this is a detailed as they will come.

At dawn this morning I saw this crow defending his mountain top against this little banana horn.  The crow was squaking at the ram and eventually ran off the bighorn.

A decent shot of a decent ram as he came down to the road as he was going to cross but he decided not to as he wanted to stay in Cleman and get shot by Coachcw next week...   ;)

I was trying out my 7D's video capability and took my first real video.  A couple rams were fighting and the bigger one bonked the smaller one twice, then he tried to tear up a bush, then he came over and kicked the smaller one until it left.  I'm pretty far away so it takes about a second for the bonk of the horns to get to my location.  I also wasn't expecting it so I had college football on in the background.  Oh well, you get the point.  Man I love sheep.

Hey Pope-  Hope you get to feeling better.  That video turned out great.  Are you able to "zoom" while in video mode?

Thanks.

Yeah, you can zoom if you have a zoom lens.  They were so far away I was already zoomed in to 280mm which is about and with the crop factor about 10x.  It is 1080 high definition but I think youtube downsamples it to SD or 720P if you click the right settings.  I should probably put it on a tripod next time also.   :P

That swine is a bugger.  Glad you were able to get out.  I am hoping to be half a person so that I can help Rose with her elk.

Thanks for the reply.  I thought the video was perfect from the distance it was shot.  It gave a real feel for the situation.  The reason asking about the zoom, was that Nikon has some that will not stay in focus, once you start the video in motion, and then try to zoom.

You know, you have to keep this one in focus too.  It's not hard though as I shot manual focus for a decade.  You just turn the little thingy a bit until it's sharp.  What I did for these was just focus before and then turn it in video mode so it was already set for the distance.  As long as they aren't coming toward you or away you should be fine.  I use it at home and it's easy to focus.

It's about like a regular decent flu.  It's contagous as hell though.  My wife and I slept in separate rooms and she never got within 20 feet of me and she got it.  Don't get in the house with someone that has it.

The virus particles bind to dust particals and remain alive and well and latent.  most average flus die at ambient temps after awhile. What I hate about this one is the complete lack of energy I have.

Pig Flu is hell....got unlucky and lost some hearing due to it last week...about 50% down. Helluva Fever. Hearing gone replaced by a loud RING. No escape I am told.

That is no Crow BTW...All Raven with a full crop...probably someones gutpile was raided. No one has a nose like a Raven...and no Crow would show that big

I've been out about a week now and I'm going back to work tomorrow.  I work with the public and shake tons of hands every day as well as papers people hold.  They use my pen to sign tons of documents.  I am told it stays alive for 6 hours on a surface...   :o  Now that it's an epidemic, I got a feeling you all may be getting it sooner or later.  It just sucks it had to be during my deer season.

Oh, and I think that guy is right about the Raven.   :P

Looks like some cool stuff Shawn.  We used to say, "you can't draw a tag if you don't apply".  You also can't get sheep pics from Bellevue!!  (who makes all those little emoticon thingies we got here?  We need some photo related ones to insert).  Anyway, I think before I head out with you I may request a doctor's note giving you a free bill of health.   :chuckle:  Hope you are feeling better.  I never really understood the flu till I had it last year.  Knocked me out for a good month.  10 days with 103 degree fever, then bronchitis.....finally had to get a steroid shot to breath.....it wasn't good.

Cool pics! Love those sheep. That swine flu sounds nasty. Fortunately for me I have a two week old at home so I was able to get the vaccine.
