I'm heading over this next week for a late buck hunt with my son and was just wondering how bad the general season was for everybody. I don't expect it to be a great hunt as numbers appear to be down across most mule deer areas. Also wondering if any of the higher elevations have received any snow yet. I'm heading over on Saturday to scout and to hunt Sunday. Sounds like the rut is definitely a bit early this year as well. Bear
-
Snow levels are dropping...You are going to have a great hunt. I think the timing is perfect for the rut and the snow. Good luck and have fun.
-
No snow anywhere in the swakane yet. Deer numbers are normal, but the big bucks are not down from the high country yet. It got hit hard with people durring the regular season so all the deer hunkered down. I did not see any bucks running does. All the bucks were still alone or in bachelor groups. Good Luck.
-
I'm heading out tomorrow to scout for a day and then hunt a day before coming home for a week. Any reports? I expect it to be extremely muddy with no snow, but we'll see. I'll report back on Sunday evening or Monday morning. Bear
-
the roads are going to be muddy, make sure you have good traction on your tires. Good Luck
-
Snow level seems high right know. hope it drops before late archery
-
PM sent.
-
all general season , no snow for us. very little deer as well, we were camped at 6700 ft.
-
Well, we're back after a short trip to check things out a bit. As expected it was muddy, with no snow at all, and very, very few deer. A day and a half of scouting brought us to a total of 2 small forkhorns and 2 spikes along with about 15 does. Not what one would want out of a special permit hunt, but I know that a week can change things quite a bit. It seems like just the beginning of the rut, so a week and possibly some weather would help immensely. :twocents: Bear
-
I was up there this weekend and saw 7 does. I glassed a WHOLE LOT of country to see only those 7 deer. A good high country snow will certainly help put more deer in the Swakane.

Bear,
Where did you scout? Remember the to look on the steepest, darkest northern aspect you can find. There are a lot of big bucks up there and one can find them with a little hiking.
-
Not enough snow up high yet to make it really good......same thing plagued me, I had the late Entiat permit in 07' and we just didn't get enough snow to bring down the high country bucks. There where allot of bucks chasing does.....but they were just the local variety, nothing eye popping. So hope for a bunch of snow!!!! I think we are supposed to get some precipitation sometime this week with the snow level being at around 5k at least that is what I heard on the radio this morning.
-
We're headin' over for round 2. Hopefully a week later and some snow will have changed things a bit. This time I'm gonna bring the laptop with so I can update if needed. Wish me luck! Bear

calling for 10-20" the next couple days in the mountains
-
Day 1- Seen quite a few more deer than last weekend. Small bucks are hanging out with does still. We saw one average size 4 point that my son may decide to take after a few days if we don't see anything better. We also saw a few small 3 point and 2 point bucks. It snowed and blowed hard today but the snow didn't amount to anymore than about half an inch. We've seen a lot of does without any bucks chasing them. Hopefully things are still getting better. Bear
-
give it time, they'll be there. things should start heating up with this weather. good luck and kill a monster there are a few still in there
-
Keep us posted and kill a monster . Looking forward to the pics and story.
-
Go get 'em Bear and Lance. Hope you guys do well.
-
I know the rut hasn't hit in the southeast yet. I drove around the other day and saw almost 100 deer. Only 2 bucks, and neither was pushing does. SHould heat up anytime though. good luck!!
-
Day 2- Things started a bit better this morning. Most of the does had at least a small buck with them. We actually saw quite a few(about 10) bucks this morning with a couple 4 points. Nothing very big, but my son said he may be willing to shoot one in a couple days or so. Nothing that I'm interested in shooting yet. There is very little snow up high in the unit, but it's fairly cold at about 28 or so today. Bear
-
Keep up the great work bear. I think you will be seeing more and more deer every day keep us posted on wether and the hunt.
Cant wait for Nov 21st...
-
Day 3- Things started out a bit slow today as the cloud level dropped down to about 3000 ft. We had not seen to many deer in the areas that we had looking that were at this elevation, but you can't shoot what you can't see, so we hunted lower then we wanted to. In the clouds we could only see about 40 yards or so. We decided to try out a different area and I ended up spotting a buck that was better then anything we had seen so far. My son thought it looked pretty good so he made a stalk on it while I watched with a spotting scope. He got close to the buck, the does busted out before he could see the buck. They started up the ridge and I figured they were gone. Then the buck came all the way back down (about a hundred yards) to round up the rest of the does. No one was gonna get left behind. I called my son and the radio and told him that the buck was coming back, he got ready, and the buck came by at about 50 yards after rounding up the last of his girlfriend. Boom, buck down. He ended up being a 3 by 4 with a 25 inch outside spread. Not deep forked but a real nice frame, especially for his first buck. I will post pics when I get home, probably tomorrow. I think that I'm gonna head home tomorrow afternoon and come back on the weekend and see what things are like. Hopefully I can find a buck for me now. Bear
-
Nice job bear! Glad you guys found one! Can't wait to see the pics!
-
Congrats Bear. Glad to hear your son connected on a nice deer. Hopefully you can do the same. Can't wait to see the pics.

Great job ;) Congrats to your son
-
Nice buck. Congrats to your son. Good luck on getting your buck!
-
We came home today to take care of his deer and get caught up on a few things at home. I'm gonna be headed back on Saturday and hope that things might pick up a little. Absolutely no reason for any deer to migrate into this unit yet as there is only about 2 inches of snow max at 6000 ft in this area. I'm hoping for some snow! Bear
-
Nice job bear! Nice buck, good luck this weekend!
-
Nice job! What a great first buck. I still have yet to kill a 25" buck in this state...so kudos to him!
-
looks like the mill creek side? great job on that buck

Way to go Lance. That is awesome!!!! You'll always remember your first one; especially when your dad could be with you. Now let's see if we can get the old man the old mossey horn he's holding out for. Good luck Bear and congrats Lance. That's a great buck!!!
-
Congrats on the Dandy buck !!!!!
-
Congrats to your son and looks like you got him pointed in the right direction!!
-
good job Lance, Happy you got a great one.

Day 1 of my last trip- I was extremely disappointed that there was basically no more snow then last weekend. I have been chasing the same deer around for the last few weekends and getting a bit tired of seeing them. We saw about half a dozen bucks today, but no shooters. I have resorted to the realization that my season will not include any migration. I'm gonna try a new area tomorrow and on Monday will be looking to tag any decent buck. Bear
-
stick with it, anything can happen at this time of year. Those big boys aren't completely stupid, they are probably there.
-
Here's a recap of Day 2 and 3. Day 2 we decided to try a completely different area. We were seeing some does but no bucks with them at all. We came to the realization that this area probably got hit really hard during general season and therefore there were very few bucks left in the area. It would probably been a decent area had there been any migration as it is an early migration spot. We ended up hiking down a closed road and watched a doe chase 2 coyotes all over the hillside. It was fun to watch. After looking the hill over for quite a bit streak spotted a bear down in the bottom of the canyon. Nov 15, last day for bear season. Decided how many chances would I get for a bear this late in the season and because we weren't seeing any deer, what the heck. I was able to close the distance to 120 yards and had a downed tree for a rest. Instant death. I love to see an animal drop like that. Wasn't a big bear at 5'7" but was about 200 lbs fat.

As far as deer hunting Day2 had less deer then we had seen on any other day for awhile. Day 3-My last day that I could hunt. Time to fill a tag. Ended up on a road that got extremely brushy and scratched the heck out of my truck. We saw a few bucks and made a stalk on one that was about a 20" 4 point. He ended up following the does down the hill and I decided not to rush a shot on him at 200 yards as he wasn't a trophy anyways. We finally got off the brushy road and decided to go to a spot where we had passed on a 22" 2 by 3 several times. We ended up pushing him out of the area and chased him until he stopped at 300 yards. Decided he wasn't big enough to pack out of where he ended up. When we got back to the truck it was 3pm so we decided to hunt our way out. As we were heading out we saw some fresh tracks on the 1/2" of fresh snow that we had that day. I walked out the tracks until they left the road and then ended up spotting a buck about 200 yards below the road. Didn't have a rest, so I had to sit and use my knees for a rest(not something I like to do at that range). I pulled the trigger and when I looked up I saw absolutely nothing. Didn't know whether I got it or not, but we were loosing light so streak and I headed down to see. Found him piled up in the brush right where he had stood. Had to take pictures quick and start cutting really quick as Pat grabbed the packs and a couple of flashlights and headed down to us. It was really steep and we all slid several times on the way down. Not what I was looking for when I drew this tag, but with no migration yet, a decent local buck.

In conclusion, I don't know if I would apply for this tag again. This is my second time with this tag and neither time had enough weather to push deer in. It's really only great if you get the migration. We got my deer at about 6000' elevation and there was about 2" of snow on the ground. It was raining hard at that elevation yesterday when we got the buck out. The southern slopes were bare at 5000'. I had a good time on this hunt anyways and spent some quality time with a couple of good friends(what it's really all about anyways). Thanks to all the guys that helped me on this hunt. It was really appreciated. Bear
-
Congrats Bear, with the bear and the deer looks like all worked out ok. Really glad to hear you harvested an animal and didn't have to eat tag soup.
-
Sounds like a great hunt to me, nice buck and a bonus bear. The buck looks to have a huge body on him.
-
Congrats on the double. Like you said, maybe not what you wanted with that tag but still a nice deer.
-
Congrats, way to get both tags filled.
-
Nice job one the bead and fine buck.
A bit of criticism on your pictures. It looks like you have a bunch of snow on your beard, either that or you were getting into the powdered donuuts and forgot to wipe your face :chuckle:
Two bucks and a bear = GREAT HUNT !!!
-
Great ending to a great hunt with your son! Congrats!
-
Bear?
Seems appropriate to have a thread name right now like that. #1, you sound like a patient hunter and will get another opportunity with or without a late tag at a good buck someday...in the meantime I think you did well and had fun...that is what it's about. You probably just dumped a butt load of stress off yourself from lifes everyday hustle and bustle.
-

:chuckle:It's called old age or stress. I don't mind it. I think it makes me look distinguished, but the says it needs to go. She'll probably have coloring it a couple years. :chuckle:
-
good job Barry, glad you had good hunts especially with your son, can't replace that
-
That's awesome. There are some big ones in there just some late snow. I was up on Roaring ridge Saturday scouting and fallowed a bear in the snow for a while was he shot up in that area? Great Job.
-
Hey nice buck....you did what you could do with the conditions you were dealt with. I was up against a similar situation in 07' when I had the late Entiat.....virtually no migration. I hunted my butt off for 14 days, knowing the type of bucks that should eventually show up, but to no avail. I ended up shooting a descent local buck on the last day of the season. Once again nice buck!!! ;)
-
:drool:Very nice!
-
Congrats Barry! I'm particularly jealous of the bear of course!
-
Great post! That sounds like solid freezer.
-
Nice job Barry, looks like a good hunt!
-
Nice size body! Congratulations on notching your tag!
-
Great bear+Buck!

I stand corrected, it was 5500 ft.

NICE BEAR!!! Glad to see you and your son tagged out with a bonus bear. Hope you left something for us bowhunters to shoot.

You and everybody else GOOD LUCK!
-
Well no matter where I go there will be people. But im in really good shape and I can hike. Thanks for the feedback bro!
-
I just got back from there. Animals not in yet. not as many people out as you would think, especially at higher elevations and I think i was the only one out of my truck. best of luck
-
Hunted the Cashmere side last Saturday, and saw 23 does, and 3 bucks "one shooter". On Sunday we wen't to the Entiat side, and saw nothing. A lot more people on the Cashmere side, but that's where the deer are, and they are all low. No sign of any rutting yet either. I'm heading to the wheat fields to put some meat in the freezer, so best of luck!

Got my first buck with a bow on Monday the 23rd in the Swakane. I'll post up a story later, I'm visiting the in laws in Boise for Turkey Day right now. Saw a few bucks (3 or 4 a day), tons of deer and lotsa lotsa hunters, including some that felt more than right in running around you to get to a deer in front of you. Thankfully they ran right by the deer and left them for us. Seemed like the bucks were all rutting to me, just a small percentage of the does are ready at a time though I think. Good luck to all still hunting.
