i'm trying to decide which caliber i should buy in my new rifle. i no both are good calibers but i'd like somethin thats pretty flat shooting & has long range knock down power. what do you guys think i should get?
-
My vote is .338 Win mag.
-
I shoot .338 win mag, for everything, love it, wont change
-
ya thats what my dad & uncle both hunt with & they love em to death
-
my guess is you gentleman have never shot a 300 rum. Much better round with better versatility by far. If you want a 338 I would definitely look at the 338 rum. pretty good advantage over the 338 win mag. With that said there is nothin wrong with the 338 win but I think there is better out there. Plus with reloading you will have better luck with a beltless round or so I have read.
-
ya the 300 rum is flatter shootin thats for sure how much is ammo for the 300 rum

Actually have shot a 300 RUM quite a bit or wouldn't have posted an opinion. I'm not a fan of any of the Ultra Mags.
-
ya my cousin takes the 300 rum up to alaska & he says its a pretty good round lots of knock down power for bear and moose
-
Dude how old are you? why does it say 1996 on your profile? I seriously doubt you will be able to handle a Ultra mag or 338 win mag if your only like 13 or 14. :twocents:
-
Just to change it up i would vote for he 7mm STW. Not a real common caliber but could definetly hold its own.
-
338 win mag and its not close
-
i have never shot any of the rum's, i have looked at the charts on a 338 rum. i guess all i am saying is i have the .338 win mag and it has done everything i have asked it to and i am sure it is capable of more, why even consider another?
-
300 rum
-
No use unless your stepping up to the 50 :twocents:
-
look at the chats again man. the 300 rum is way flat has just as much power if not more. 300rum zero in at 300 yards it drops 20 inches at 500 and has 2397 energy at 500. the 338 and zero at 300 it drops 30inches at 500 and has 1450 energy at 500. the 300rum is 4000 energy at the muzzle. the 338 at the muzzle is 3700.thats with a 180 grain bullet. go with the 300 rum
-
I shoot a 325wsm for everything so i would reccomend the 338wm .
-
30-378 weatherby :chuckle: :IBCOOL: :chuckle:
-
If you want to shoot long range the 338 is not even in the same league as the 300 RUM. The 338 is good for big heavy game, otherwise the 300 RUM will out perform in every aspect.

:yeah:
-
.338 win. Theres only 2" diff at 500 with both shooting a 180gr the .338 falls behind with the lower BC but thats y u shot a .225gr accubond :twocents:
-
I have a 338 and two 300 win mags and had a 300RUM but just look and compare on long range.

Well said bearpaw. I agree... 300 RUM has my vote any day :chuckle:
-
300 WSM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;)
-
.270 win! :chuckle: :chuckle: Seriously, of the two you mentioned, i'd go with the .300 ultra mag.

7mm RUM
Less recoil than the 30 cal or bigger guns, but look at the ballistics. If you want a flat shooting big game round--- This is it!
I get 3600 fps out of mine 150 grain bullet
3" high at 100
14" low at 500.
Pretty impressive to hold hair to 500 yards.
And check out the long range knock down.

what are you hunting? if your hunting elk at 500yds then the choice is obvious. if your hunting deer or lopes at 500yds then the same is true, duh. maybe you wanna shoot competition br at 500-1000yds? who knows? you really could use either caliber for these situaitons but i wouldn't consider it ideal and if you're gonna do it, why not do it right? questions like this always frustrate me. there are so many variables to consider when choosing a caliber, do some research that pertains to what your primary purpose of this rifle is going to be instead of asking for advise while providing little insight on what your trying to achieve. if you want something thats shoots flat a long ways out i could recommend some 1000yd benchrest wildcat calibers that will out perform either of those, or you could get a 50bmg and be done with it. :bash:
-
I had one of each. Ended up selling the .338 and never looked back. The .300 ultra mag is a great round. I hunt wide open land in eastern washington, Montana and hopefully Wyoming and the .300 ultra mag is a better round out there. ( my opinion )
-
unless you plan on going to AK I would pick the 300 win mag. Cheaper ammo and more than does the job. I have a 338 RUM and I hate to say it its a little over kill. :chuckle:
-
ya thats true
-
Another thing to consider is availability of ammo. Lets be honest, the 300RUM has become fairly popular, but pull into Grangeville, ID sometime and see if you can reliably find a box off ammo when you left yours at home 450 miles away. Lot better chance you'll find the 338win mag in out of the way places than you will find the 300RUM. I have neither caliber, but have shot both and if I was to buy one it would be the 338win mag.
-
Consistant perfomance is the only thing that counts, the rifle/cartridge has to do the same thing every time. You have to hit the target. forget the books, go shoot. numbers from a manual wont do a thing. If you can put the bullet in a 6 inch area at ANY range you will kill, if it is a 30/06 or any magnum.
If you cant put it in a 6 inch circle, DO NOT SHOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pretty open ended question. Based purely on the question you posted the 300 RUM, all other things equal, is a more versitile cal.... especially if you're talking flat shooting/long range stuff.
That being said, under 500 yards there are tons of cals that will do the job just as well that are far less punishing to shoot and far less expensive to shoot. Considering that the vast majority of game is killed under 200 yards the necessity in shooting mags is generally over stated. Unless you are planning practicing a lot and really developing your skills to shoot out to 500 yards and beyond just stick w/ some of the ol standbys.... 30-06, 280, 270. If you gotta get a mag consider a 7mm rem mag, 300 win mag, 300 wsm. There's nothing in N. America that I wouldn't hunt with any of the 30s mentioned above.
-
Wait why not a 7mm RUM my friend? :chuckle: lapua? :chuckle:
-
Whats wrong with the 7mm RUM?
-
Whats wrong with the 7mm RUM?

I was a little skeptical until I bought one...... Now I'm sold on it.
-
Can't you load the 300 rum down with 150 gr. bullets and achieve near the same results as the 7mm rum...... :dunno:
-
I shoot a .308 Norma Mag, when I shoot a gun anyway (bowhunter). It is a punisher, and you have to reload everything. Not sure how it stacks up. Anyone have any input on this round? Not to jack the thread, I believe I can use .338 brass just need to trim and resize.
-
I got a 300 RUM and it's one flat shooting cartridge! plenty good for anything North America has to offer including the big bears. With the 30 cal you have an endless variety of good bullets to choose from.
-
8mm Remington magnum. .323 bullet diameter will put you right in the middle. pretty versitile.
-
addicted, I hope you were kidding and forgot the smiley.
-
The 8mm Rem Mag is a AWSOME cartridge! ;)
-
nothing like being a little different lol. whole bunch of people have .338 or a 300 winmag.
"While it would be accurate to say that the 8mm Rem. Mag. does nothing that cannot be done by one of the .300 Magnums, it is also fair to say that the popular .300 Magnums do nothing that cannot be done by the 8mm Magnum."
http://www.chuckhawks.com/8mmMag.htm
the sentence after the one i quoted however, does state the .338 as being in the next group size up.
-
This is all just IMHO. The 8mm Rem mag case is a good design to neck up or down but as a 8mm it has the German "Nazi" cures. Anything 8 mm is never going to realy be popular in the USA. Neck the 8mm mag down to 7mm and its the 7STW, a great round. Go up to the 358STW and again a good cartridge but like alot of folks I just cant like any 8mm.
-
Grizzly 95 I also have a 308 Norma Mag. It is a hell of a round. I took a brand new Marlin MR7 and had it punched out. I wish I had used something else. Did not realize the MR7 rifles were going to be worth so much. You can work the 338 brass down. Cabelas has the 306 Norma brass. It is the Norma brand. $72.00 for a box of 20 unprimed rounds. If you get to where you really need some, contact me.

the 8mm used in the military rounds prior to the 50's was not even the same round you normally find today. the older 8mm came in at .321 inches which has created a problem and an entirely different round now that we are more accurately measured with .323inch.
the 8mm Mauser you can buy off the shelves today is also known as 8x57is or js. where as its older wartime counterpart was 8x57I i believe, which really has nothing to do with the American standard 8mm Remington magnum introduced in 1978........ lonoke Arkansas(Remington's ammo development plant) is hardly Nazi occupied these days, they can't stand the humidity :P anyways, hard to say that something is never going to be popular in the US, i mean look at all the guys running around with the short mags....... just kidding, don't shoot. ;)
oh, and yes i do concur that 7mmSTW is a pretty sick round.

You didn't get my point, probably my fault, alot of what I type doest come across right.
