my guess is you gentleman have never shot a 300 rum. Much better round with better versatility by far. If you want a 338 I would definitely look at the 338 rum. pretty good advantage over the 338 win mag. With that said there is nothin wrong with the 338 win but I think there is better out there. Plus with reloading you will have better luck with a beltless round or so I have read.
Actually have shot a 300 RUM quite a bit or wouldn't have posted an opinion. I'm not a fan of any of the Ultra Mags.

i'm trying to decide which caliber i should buy in my new rifle. i no both are good calibers but i'd like somethin thats pretty flat shooting & has long range knock down power. what do you guys think i should get?
7mm RUM
Less recoil than the 30 cal or bigger guns, but look at the ballistics. If you want a flat shooting big game round--- This is it!
I get 3600 fps out of mine 150 grain bullet
3" high at 100
14" low at 500.
Pretty impressive to hold hair to 500 yards.
And check out the long range knock down.

That being said, under 500 yards there are tons of cals that will do the job just as well that are far less punishing to shoot and far less expensive to shoot. Considering that the vast majority of game is killed under 200 yards the necessity in shooting mags is generally over stated. Unless you are planning practicing a lot and really developing your skills to shoot out to 500 yards and beyond just stick w/ some of the ol standbys.... 30-06, 280, 270. If you gotta get a mag consider a 7mm rem mag, 300 win mag, 300 wsm. There's nothing in N. America that I wouldn't hunt with any of the 30s mentioned above.

This is all just IMHO. The 8mm Rem mag case is a good design to neck up or down but as a 8mm it has the German "Nazi" cures. Anything 8 mm is never going to realy be popular in the USA. Neck the 8mm mag down to 7mm and its the 7STW, a great round. Go up to the 358STW and again a good cartridge but like alot of folks I just cant like any 8mm.
the 8mm used in the military rounds prior to the 50's was not even the same round you normally find today. the older 8mm came in at .321 inches which has created a problem and an entirely different round now that we are more accurately measured with .323inch.
the 8mm Mauser you can buy off the shelves today is also known as 8x57is or js. where as its older wartime counterpart was 8x57I i believe, which really has nothing to do with the American standard 8mm Remington magnum introduced in 1978........ lonoke Arkansas(Remington's ammo development plant) is hardly Nazi occupied these days, they can't stand the humidity :P anyways, hard to say that something is never going to be popular in the US, i mean look at all the guys running around with the short mags....... just kidding, don't shoot. ;)
oh, and yes i do concur that 7mmSTW is a pretty sick round.
