We planned to go to one of our woody holes up river. But when we got there it was blown out. A real bummer. So we decided to get on the road and find a mud flat and try for some widgeon. We finally found a good place to set up with about an hour of shooting time left and we did pretty good. 3 Widgeon, 3 Surf scoters, and 1 white wing scoter. And yes we all have our sea duck cards.

Nice Shoot !!!

nice work! I wouldn't mind getting one of those surf scoters mounted myself. I'd like to find an old squaw and a scoter this year if I can figure out how to get into them!

Dustin and Dooms, Seaducks are super easy to hunt. First you need to apply for your Sea Duck permit. Then all you need to do is get out on the water. You can hunt most of the sound. And all you need is about a half hour of scouting. Once you find the birds, through out your long lines, and the fun begins. Also sea ducks fly around all day long so dont worry about being late to the spot. Its just as good in the middle of the day as it is in the morning and evening.
Also learn how to ID the birds. Thats the most important thing about it. For instance, if you have a flock of harli's come in and you unload on them. Well needless to say, with all the people in there houses all over the sound, they will be happy to make a call to the WDFW. And you guys wont be able to hunt again for a pretty long time.

I actually do have my sea duck, snow goose, and brant authorization already this year. going on a guided snow goose hunting on the islands next month that my dad got, but aside from that don't know where to launch for salt. I know of some areas I could try though, maybe the Perdy/Case Inlet area. I thought Harlies were mostly up north though, in the rockier areas around Neah Bay and the coast.

Harli's are almost everywhere in the sound. Ive seen them, at Point defiance, 3 tree point, and all the way up to the islands.
In the spring and summer you can find them in almost any mountain river or creek all the way down to Oregon. My point is if you want do get a harli, you dont have to go all the way up to neah bay. Trust me, with a little scouting, and the right spread, you can have them coming in all day long.
Oh, and if there just buzzing your spread, try your hardest not to hit the hen. Ive had so many people go out for one, and when the birds come in there really close to each other, 5 out of 10 dont lead the bull far enough and hit the hen thats on his tail.....LOL

Dustin, U have a boat?
I can set you up.
-
I have three boats, but i'm not sure if any of them are up to the task yet. I have a 12FT with 9.9hp available, a 10FT with electric, and a 20FT Lund with a 350. seems I either have too small or too large. the 12FT with the 9.9 would be a good duck retriever if we hunted from the shoreline though. But at places like pt defiance I am not sure I could even make it around that point because there is soo much current there.

The 20'er would work just fine, it can pretty bad out there in a heart beat. U used a 17'er adn it is sometimes hard for me on that
